La Folie is a French restaurant located in Russian Hill of San Francisco. Chef Roland Passot, with his wife Jamie opened La Folie in March of 1988. He combines the freshest ingredients in exotic combinations. Each plate leaves the kitchen resembling art-a canvas of color and design that tastes even better than it looks. La Folie continues to be rated as one of the top restaurants, one of the first bay area restaurants to receive a star from the Michelin Guide, 4 stars from the San Francisco Chronicle and 4 stars from San Francisco Magazine. In celebration of 21 years, The Passots have expanded their bar into a lounge located next door, perfect for before or after dinner drinks.

We went to La Folie for my birthday. I had been there almost 30 years ago and remembered it being delicious. It is still delicious! A lovely room, impeccable service and great care for my gluten-free husband made us feel cozy and comfortable right away. And then dish after dish of creative combinations with unusual sauces, some truffles, some Wagyu beef, a candle on my chocolate-passion fruit Bombe - yum. I could not have asked for a more perfect birthday celebration and there were 2 other birthdays being celebrated as well. I will not wait another 25 years to return.
We had a wonderful birthday dinner tonight at La Folie. The seared foie gras was delicious (honestly my favorite in a long time). Next favorite was the ribeye. It was cooked to perfection. The chef came out to greet us and asked how we liked our dinner, which to me was always a good sign of restaurants that pride themselves in their work. Overall, the staff was really friendly, and greeted us like family. I would come here again.
Our first visit-wife's birthday. Service was superb. Food was very good though some dishes better than others. I had beef tenderloin, Lobster with Bisque, Fuyu persimmon and pear salad, and a cheese souffle/blueberry desert. Beef among the best I have had in nearly 50 years of dining out. The rest was very good as well. Lots of lobster w/the bisque; nice use of Fuyus. Wife had Seared Foie Gras which she loved, lamb chops, and a cheese souffle. Son had squab, quail, fuyu salad, a cauliflower soup, lobster rissotto, and a cheese platter. None of the dishes were average; a few just stood out from the others. We bought a bottle of champagne which waived the $50 corkage for the bottle of Bordeaux we brought with us. Two of us had coffee, which was very nice. $644.89 plus gratuity. Not as pricey as some of the higher end restaurants, but we thought that the meal was a dash short on the use of spices and creativity - but just a dash. The price compared to food compared to some lower priced competitors (e.g. SPQR) was on the high side. Still, a very nice evening. Would not turn down an offer of a return visit.
Amazing food and service! My husband and I came here before we saw the Nutcracker for a dinner date. Our reservation was at 5 pm and they assured us we would be out by 6:15 pm to make the show. Our uber was running late so we were 15 min late for our reservation. I had called to let them know we were running late. The staff was so nice and accommodating!! The food was AMAZING and unique. I will definitely come back! We did not feel rushed at all and were out the door by exactly 6:15 pm. Highly recommend for delicious food and amazing service!
Easily one of the best meals I've ever had. In any city.
Every part of the experience was excellent from booking the reservation thru dinner. The dining room is very attractive. Service was the perfect mix of knowledgeable and attentive without being overbearing. Pacing was perfect. Dinner itself was phenomenal. It's not inexpensive but at no point did I feel the experience didn't justify the tab. I though chef Roland stopping by the table to see how we enjoyed dinner was a nice touch. Hats off to him and his staff... for a restaurant that's been in business for so long, they clearly don't rest on their reputation. Just a great experience in every way.
La Folie the restaurant is incredible. We have been there twice, coming from out of town, both for wedding anniversaries, and although a little pricey, it remains our absolutely finest favorite dining destination. The service is altogether excellent, the chef/owner welcoming and friendly, the wine list is fantastic, and the cuisine is incredible. This time, we discovered they have a beautiful lounge next door. We will go back again.
Excellent food exquisitely presented. Go for the tasting meal and indulge in an amazing journey. You will not be disappointed. So why the 3 stars (good) overall? We had a reservation for 8:45p and were not seated until 9:25p. Given the restaurant requires a credit card to secure a reservation with a strict cancellation policy, we didn't feel we had the option to leave after waiting a half hour which I think is more than generous. The next day I was talkint with a friend who had his birthday dinner there and he waited an hour for his table. So, I would recommend calling ahead when you have a reservation and seeing if they are runnning on schedule-- save yourself some trouble. The food is outstanding so wish this didn't start the way it did.
Absolutely perfect. The food was incredible and the chef made his way to the table to make sure everything was perfect. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect meal. Truly one of the most memorable meals of my life. Every single dish was plated impeccably and cooked to perfection. I have told everyone I know about this special restaurant and I will be making a trip back to San Francisco just to go back and dine once again and try some of the other dishes I didn't get to have. The chefs take on foie gras is a dish I felt after tasting should be on everyone's bucket list if they only knew how special it was. Everything was so creative in an absolutely refined and tasteful way. I wish there were more restaurants and chefs that treated guests the way this restaurant treats its guests. I always felt from the moment i made the reservation the restaurant truly cared to make my evening special and at every opportunity took the initiative to ask if there was anything they could do to make the evening more special than it already was by eating such incredibly prepared food. I was also very pleasantly surprised that we were able to tip , on the bill, the rest of the staff at the restaurant in addition to the waiter. I have learned a lot from just dining in this restaurant on how to run my own business and how to be so considerate to every customer as well as my staff. This is a very special place that clearly is run by people who love what they do and love their guests. I almost feel mistreated now whenever I eat anywhere else because of how well I was treated as soon as I was first contacted by the restaurant to the last goodbye and offer to call me a cab as I walked out.
