About La Boca

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF TAPAS!

Opened in 2006 by 8 time James Beard Award Nominee, Chef James Campbell Caruso.
La Boca has the feel of a lively European wine bar, featuring an extensive selection of carefully chosen Mediterranean and South American wines. Knowledgeable and animated staff graciously guide customers to the perfect wine to complement their meals. La Boca also prides itself on being an ambassador of Spanish sherry culture, transporting its guests to Cadiz in the crisp cool flavors of Fino, or the deep fig-essence of a Pedro Ximenez.

Full to capacity almost every night since its opening, La Boca has been a hit with both locals and the world travelers that visit Santa Fe. La Boca has earned numerous awards both local and national, including the Santa Fe Reporter’s “Restaurant of the Year,” and the International Wine and Food Society’s “Award of Excellence.”

Amazing food and service. Wine was perfectly paired with our tapas. Roberto and Chico took care of us.

My husband and I have visited La Boca more times than I can recall, always enjoying the food and the service. Our most recent experiences have soured my opinion and I don't think I'll go back. The last time we tried to eat there, my husband made a reservation through OpenTable, but somehow our reservation was bumped to their back-door restaurant, Taverna La Boca. Also a fine restaurant, but not the same. When you want La Boca, you want La Boca. This time we were clued in to this very under-handed trick; my husband called to confirm my OpenTable reservation, and sure enough, they had already bumped us over (without telling us, either time). He corrected this error, and when we walked in the door to La Boca, we were seated in the correct restaurant. Thanks, guys.

Once seated, we got the stink-eye for not ordering alcohol. What gives? Why not develop an awesome non-alcoholic menu of mocktails instead of banking on this falsehood that every patron wants to get trashed off your wine list? Our waiter was nice enough, but he sure didn't waste any time on our table, and god forbid you commit the mortal sin of ordering a side of bread to go with your meal. How absolutely gauche.

In the end, I guess we do belong in the stables with the rest of the commoners. Leave the big boy restaurant to the Texans.

Has been a go-to when in Santa Fe for the last 10 years. Sorely disappointed this time (& last July). Menu selections reduced and bottled wine very expensive. The food we had (beet salad & paella) was good, but we felt options were so limited. Server not overly attentive, but did check in on us to see if we needed anything. Actually, the bus staff was great!! Since the place is very small, its tempting to interject oneself into the conversations of those at tables on either side!!! Ha ha. Being disappointed in the last two visits, we decided we would probably not return on our next time in Santa Fe and go to one of the other Tapas restaurants in town.

We were that 3:00 3 top that you fear seating between proper services. It could have been horrible but nothing else was open.
Freaking Hooray for us. This was an amazing lunch and la Boca is a first rate tapas restaurant. The service was knowledgeable and efficient and as on point as you would expect at 6:45 on a Friday night.
The blood orange sangria was complexly refreshing and enjoyable. The plates were perfect and much bread was employed in soaking up sauces. The gambas ajillo were spot on and a good time was had by all.
Do NOT pass this place up.
Especially if it’s Happy Hour.

Our restaurant reservation was honored even though we were very late in arriving due to unforeseen air travel delays. Thank you to the wonderful staff for that. The Flamenco music was entertaining and very good. My only criticism was that the lighting could have been turned down a tad. Atmosphere didn’t feel as cozy as it could have been. Food was delicious and service was perfect.

We came an hour early hoping to sit at the bar until our reservation at 7:15. However the hostess said our table was ready and sat us right away. Dinner was great but conversation was difficult with the guitarist in the same room. We were asked to give up the table around 8 pm. It seemed unfair but since we got there early I was okay with it.

Not up to the usual standard. We had a reservation but they tried to shunt us off to the Taberna. Not exactly welcoming! Nope! They were out of sparkling water (?!?!), so we had to drink awful city tap water, not even filtered. YUK! Waitress recommended an expensive wine, but it was no good, had to send it back. Ordered a cheaper glass, which was fine. They didn’t bring bread to the table, we had to ask for it specially. The Waitress was a bit snippy. Food generally good but potatoes were soft, nearly raw, not crispy and nice. B- grade overall. We expect better from La Boca.

We were very pleased with the food, everything was excellent! I was disappointed though that I was charged an extra $4:50 for a piece of gluten free bread to have with my manchego cheese tapa. That was uncalled for. I don't usually return to restaurants that take advantage of people with gluten intolerance.

We have been coming here once a year for over three years, clearly not a regular customers since we live out of town, but this place has always managed to maintain consistency in food quality and service. Until tonight.

The food was heavy, unexceptional, and really quite bland. Also, not sure when bruschetta became a Spanish tapa... Patatas Bravas that had previously been prepared with finesse looked like potato wedges coming from a deep fryer at a fast food restaurant. With a dollop of tasteless aioli. Previous menus we've seen here had so much more variety, and items that actually resembled real Spanish tapas...

Service was ok to start, but (something must have happened in the kitchen mid-meal?) our once personable server hardly took time to ask if we were ok after we had our first (and only) round of tapas.

The busser, dear god, not a smile, coming by every (I'm not even kidding) 2 minutes, sometimes sooner to collect plates, one I had barely set my fork on before it was grabbed in front of my face. He came back several times, one time having the audacity to mention, with an eye roll mind you, he needed dishes for the kitchen???? Are you kidding me? Sorry pal, not my problem; quit circling me like a vulture while I eat, please.

Previous visits here have included hours of excellent food and drink, laughing with the staff, feeling free to ask questions about the menu, etc, this visit left us feeling like we couldn't get out of there fast enough (and yes, we had a reservation). In and out in less than an hour.

This place appears to be riding on the coattails of its once great reputation. Air of tension and haste clear across the staff as well as the food, which is all really such a shame, as we sincerely looked forward to this visit to celebrate a birthday.

Won't be back. Hope this place finds its groove again, but, until then, your money would be better spent elsewhere.

We love to start our annual visit to Santa Fe at La Boca. We see locals and visitors enjoying the food and wine. The menu always includes creative combinations of ingredients and excellent presentation of typical Spanish tapas. When we tried the same dishes at another Spanish restaurant in SF, we were disappointed. In this visit, the only dish that disappointed included some Brussel sprouts that were not quite cooked enough for our taste. Our waitress was helpful with wine suggestions and also knew when to suggest that two orders of something were appropriate for four people. When we first arrived, we were told we'd been seated in the sister restaurant, La Taberna, but when we asked to stay in this quieter, no-live-music place, she found a place for us, which we appreciated, wanting to introduce friends to the place we know and love. We will likely return before our week is up.

Everything from the bruschetta and shrimp in olive oil as well as service was excellent. The paella, however, was mediocre at best. No saffron or taste to it. For a Spanish restaurant this is very disappointing. Go to Spain, learn how to cook it well, then come back and offer it to the customers.

Ate here on New Year’s Eve, and they had us seated at the bar. It was early (5:45), but they had already run out of Sangria (?!!). So, I was seriously considering leaving to go elsewhere, but the bartender came up with some concoction that made a decent substitute for sangria, so we stayed. The tapas were good (we ordered bruschetta and dates), but we’ve had better paella (lots of tomato and paprika, not much other flavor, and the mussels were gritty!). There were some gentlemen playing flamenco when we arrived, but it was towards the end of their set, and we left just before they started again. Overall, if the bartender hadn’t gone above and beyond, it would have been a disappointing night (and not very good way to ring out the old year!)

Whereas the food and selections were impressive, the bread served both initially and with the sandwich was disappointing. There are several bakeries in Santa Fe that offer much better quality bread, specifically the Sage Bake House for example. We strongly recommend that you consider up-grading the quality of the bread served.
