About La Boca

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF TAPAS!

Opened in 2006 by 8 time James Beard Award Nominee, Chef James Campbell Caruso.
La Boca has the feel of a lively European wine bar, featuring an extensive selection of carefully chosen Mediterranean and South American wines. Knowledgeable and animated staff graciously guide customers to the perfect wine to complement their meals. La Boca also prides itself on being an ambassador of Spanish sherry culture, transporting its guests to Cadiz in the crisp cool flavors of Fino, or the deep fig-essence of a Pedro Ximenez.

Full to capacity almost every night since its opening, La Boca has been a hit with both locals and the world travelers that visit Santa Fe. La Boca has earned numerous awards both local and national, including the Santa Fe Reporter’s “Restaurant of the Year,” and the International Wine and Food Society’s “Award of Excellence.”

We ate at the Taberna and not the main room. Same menu and chef. All plates meant to be shared. Bacon wrapped dates and Brussels sprouts were excellent.

There was a guitar player who was also quite good.

New menu - small plates with enormous flavors. Try the Sherry pairings they’re fantastic! If you are staying in a comfy Inn you can opt for your dessert to go. Enjoy!

Food as always was excellent. Service was painfully slow without any explanation or apology, and we arrived well in advance of the later arriving crowd. We ordered 5 shared small plates. The first arrived fairly soon; the second arrived after a noticeable delay; plates 3 and 4 arrived together more than 30 minutes later. Our waitress did not seem concerned or even aware that we were waiting an unacceptable period of time. Food deliveries seemed to be coming from the kitchen with regularity so we assume the problem was an inattentive and disorganized server. The couple next to us arrived 15 minutes after we did and departed 15 minutes before us; they had a different server. We have dined at LaBoca perhaps 20 times and have never had a service problem before this visit; we hope it was an anomaly and will not occur again.

La Boca HAD been a top notch in my book. I simply love the cozy feel and the buzzing ambiance, not to mention the fabulous food. But here's what they did.
I booked 2 days ahead of time for a 7:15 pm reservation on a Saturday for 4 people at La Boca. We were treating another couple to dinner and they were from out of state (we live in Albuquerque). La Boca called me on the phone Friday, the day before, to confirm. But when we showed up Saturday, the hostess assertively stated "we have you seated at La Boca Taverna, the location just behind here." She was so direct and matter-of-fact that before I could even register what they had done, we had walked around the block to the back side, to a completely DIFFERENT restaurant, simply named - La Boca Taverna.
Sure they share the same kitchen, but come on. The atmosphere is a huge part of a restaurant's appeal. This other restaurant was nearly empty (I think there were 6 other people there) and it was a bit cold. I had eaten there before, and it is perfectly fine but it is NOT the La Boca that you call 3 days ahead of time to book!
I didn't want to make a scene, but if I had to do it again .... I would have made a scene. I would have pushed back when we were told our table was not even in THIS restaurant.
I felt duped.
And I later realized that the hostess was firm with me because she was moving us quickly. And once she realized we were fine with moving, she told me that next time I book online, I need to specify in the notes to the restaurant that I want to be in the La Boca main restaurant.

Sorry, La Boca. This is bad form.

We chose La Boca for a special occasion. We were seated immediately by a friendly hostess, and a server greeted us. As we awaited our server, we noticed the staff was friendly and engaging amongst themselves as well as the guests. Sadly, our server appeared to have arrived late to work. He was curt and hardly engaged in any conversation. Our meal was quickly taking a turn for the worse. He returned with our beverages and remained curt until I spoke to another server informing her of our occasion. The food was creative and had an appealing presentation.
On a previous visit we had experienced poor service, but we thought we'd try it again since we love tapas. Service, food quality and presentation, and atmosphere make an overall dining experience. La Boca is hit or miss.

Outstanding food and service with consistency! Every time we visit Santa Fe this is the first restaurant we go to. The food is exceptional and the wait staff knows exactly how to pair your tapas so you maximize your options and blend your meal perfectly. The wine selections are delicious and reasonably priced. We can’t say enough about the experience.

This was my second meal here and everything was (again) fantastic. The wine list isn't huge but it is well crafted to pair with the menu and glass prices were fairly reasonable. Be sure not to pass up the mushroom bruschetta!

This will likely become our favorite dinner spot in Santa Fe. We tried this restaurant for a dinner on Friday after Thanksgiving and we were not disappointed. The food was creative and excellent. Best Paella I have had to date, and I have had hundreds. Other dishes were equally good and our favorite were the bacon wrapped dates. Also, try their sangria - both red and especially peach white are noteworthy.

La Boca was so busy. We felt very squashed in our table as it was packed. The noise level was very load. The ambiance was not very special. The Tapas for very tasty but you only got a few bites to share and it is very very pricey for what you got. It was also my husband's birthday and they brought him at Desert which we were charged for.

Mostly wonderful tapas, especially if you take some risks and deviate from the cheese and jamon- I recommend the grilled artichokes with goat cheese, the tuna "cooked" in blood oranges, and the shrimp. The music was fabulous, the service was generous.

La Boca is my favorite spot in Santa Fe. The tapas are exceptional and the wine list excellent. A real hit this time was two exquisite smoked oysters served icy cold with a spicy green sauce. Heavenly!
The room is tiny and even crowed, but that only makes it conducive to a brief chat with folks at neighboring tables.

Service is prompt, friendly and informative.

LaBoca is outstanding, no question there. However, they are tiny and if you don't have reservations, I can't imagine you'd get in at dinner. The tables seem to be growing closer and closer together over time and there's nowhere to stand while you wait for your reservation. Not being in the business, I'm not sure, but it's beginning to seem like they're overbooking themselves. We saw two instances where parties of two were asked if they'd mind moving to a smaller table so they could seat a party of four by putting two 2s together. Neither party seemed unhappy, after all they got to move to cozy tables against the wall rather than the larger center aisle tables that are in the swirling center of fast moving servers and patrons coming and going. Yet it seemed odd to see them asked to move. We always bring out of town friends here because it's just so amazingly good but maybe we need to switch to lunch reservations? Or early dinners on slower weeknights when possible? Saturday night at 7 was crazy chaotic -- though the food and service remain impeccable.

This was the fourth time we have eaten there — which probably sums up how good it is given that we don’t live in Santa Fe. Good but not extensive selection of tapas. We have never had anything which wasn’t good, and there is enough variety to not repeat dishes on subsequent visits unless you want to. Reasonable wine list, at least by the bottle (we have never ordered by the glass). The tables are crammed together according to the latest urban fashion and they are usually full, so the waitstaff is kept very busy, but still manages to pay attention to each table. Prices are high, but appropriate for a high- end restaurant with lots of imported food.

Not really all that special. Gambas and Chorizo dishes were good. Goat cheese with honey was nothing special. Flat iron was extremely tough. Our server was not helpful - did not offer any suggestions, not especially friendly, no smiles, just did what she had to and nothing more. They do have a very good wine list. La Boca has great potential but overall it was just ordinary - not a fun evening.

The food was pretty good and the waiter, Pablo, was great. Here was the issue: I made a reservation a week ahead. I did call and request to change the reservation time by a half hour earlier in the day and was told no problem. When we arrived(party of 4) on time, I was told we would be seated in the Taberna and we should go outside, walk a half a block, take a right and head back to the rear of the alley to enter their "satellite " dining area. Okay, this was a little weird considering someone had called to confirm the reservation. Couldn't they have let us know that we wouldn't be in the main dining room? We figured out where to go and were pleased to find out there would be live music-- a solo vocalist and guitarist. Unfortunately, her amp was turned up so high that both the vocal and guitar music were ear piercing. We asked twice if the amp could be turned down as we had come to enjoy a meal with friends and not watch a performance. No luck. The performer had a beautiful voice and played well however, she needed someone to help her figure out the correct volume for her style, instrument, and the small room. After our meal, I returned to the hostess and politely provided feedback about our experience. I was told that since I had made my reservation on Open Table, I needed to note that we wanted the "main" room in order to be seated there. This wasn't noted anywhere on the website, so as a first time visitor I had no way of knowing this. Again, weird since the issue was really their lack of ability to provide a decent dining experience in the Taberna. So, I was really disappointed by both the experience and the response we received. Given all the wonderful restaurants in Santa Fe, I doubt we'll be back.

We went with the intention to sample a wide variety of tapas, and the plan worked to perfection. The chicken liver pate, boquerones, little tacos, tuna carpaccio were all excellent and the bill was reasonable even with a bottle of wine. (Although wine prices seem high to me.)

The food here was delicious, it it seemed odd to me that when I made the reservation for the restaurant, I was told it was for the Taverna, which was out the door, down an alley and tucked in behind some other buildings. I thought the main restaurant was just fine, but since it was my first visit, I didn’t ask questions about the alternative site. Our food was delicious, and the service attentive. My only complaint was the live music. For what was advertised as a tapas place, the country style music from a person who seemed to have a very limited repertoire was dissonant and distracting. I especially enjoyed the watermelon salad and the shrimp! The local beer was also very refreshing.
