La Bande, in San Francisco Proper’s restored 1908 flatiron on Market Street, is a Cal-Med aperitif and tapas bar on the ground floor adjacent to Villon restaurant-bar, with both an inspired indoor space and outdoor patio. The outdoor space is reminiscent of a European cafe and much like the rooftop bar, Charmaine’s, celebrates the hotel’s Market Street location.

La Bande focuses on gourmet tapas and Galician conservas inspired by the Mediterranean coast, the streets of Barcelona and La Boqueria Market, curated and prepared by acclaimed Executive Chef Jason Fox, as well as craft aperitif cocktails and a vermouth program by BVHospitality, notable old-world wines, European draft beers and a retail section boasting a selection of imported European goods. Much like favorite tapas bars in Barcelona, the idea is to use the best local ingredients very simply in a space that inspires friends to come together and share a meal in the European spirit.

While the staff and ambience were lovely, the food was really disappointing for a bar in The Proper. The menu was minimal to begin with, but things like the garlic shrimp and petrale sole were very bland. We ended up using a lot of their homemade hot sauce to make the food flavorful. We went at 7:30pm on a Saturday and only one other couple came in the entire time we were there, which was a bad sign. I do hope they improve, as it could be an awesome spot if they borrowed a chef from Charmaine’s upstairs.

Great service!! Very friendly! Food came out in a timely manner so we could easily get to The Orpheum on time. Loved the garlic shrimp and the salt cod croquetas!

Delicious tapas, great service, best restaurant choice when going to the Orpheum, it’s a block away.

I was in a group of 9 women, we all got the prix fixe menu. It was too much, we could have gotten 4 or 5 meals to share. The dessert was my favorite but all the food was great.

Mostly pre-made small bites with a few made-to-order items. The food was good and the ambiance was nice. A good place for a quick and light pre-theatre meal.

La Bande was fine. It isn't clear on the website that all parties over 3 people will be seated outside. They do have heat lamps and umbrellas outside, but it was very windy and cold on our visit there and the heat lamps were rendered pretty much useless. The sizes for share plates were not consistent or clear on the menu, for the price of the meal, it didn't feel like a good value. The quality of the food was also just okay. The service was spotty and wasn't very organized, someone ran a few plates to our table and didn't know what they were putting down. Overall, it wasn't a great experience for us.

Good menu offerings. A couple of tapas we ordered were on the salty side, but the skirt steak was delicious. Service could improve... had wave down waiters for water refills, then again for ordering dessert and coffee. Espresso was delivered, but had to ask for sugar and a spoon.
