La Bande, in San Francisco Proper’s restored 1908 flatiron on Market Street, is a Cal-Med aperitif and tapas bar on the ground floor adjacent to Villon restaurant-bar, with both an inspired indoor space and outdoor patio. The outdoor space is reminiscent of a European cafe and much like the rooftop bar, Charmaine’s, celebrates the hotel’s Market Street location.

La Bande focuses on gourmet tapas and Galician conservas inspired by the Mediterranean coast, the streets of Barcelona and La Boqueria Market, curated and prepared by acclaimed Executive Chef Jason Fox, as well as craft aperitif cocktails and a vermouth program by BVHospitality, notable old-world wines, European draft beers and a retail section boasting a selection of imported European goods. We loved the food and greatly appreciated the complementary amuse-bouche and gluten free bread option. Be aware that you’ll most likely sit outside as there is very little indoor seating, luckily the heaters did their job so it wasn’t too cold.

Restaurants in the Civic Center area have been hit or miss for us, but how nice to have a solid tapas place so close to the Orpheum! Josh was an exceptional server and we'll ask for him next time. Food was wonderful, particularly the exclusive sourdough (bread is so often a footnote at best), the cheese sampler, the white beans and pork shoulder, and the charcuterie. Nice selection of Amaro afterward as well. Clever use of space inside, chic interior design. Fun all around, and we'll be back before our next show.

What a surprising find in an unlikely location. Great for pre-theater food before seeing something at the Strand (ACT). Really good food and an interesting wine list. Fast service.

We tried La Bande for the first time because it is close to the Strand theater. We were not familiar with most of the items on the menu and Joshua, our server, was very helpful in describing various dishes and helping us with our selections. The food was delicious and the service was excellent.

Even though I had a reservation, I was not seated at an indoor table. I had to either sit at he bar on a stool that was not high enough, or sit outside where rain was threatening.

This is the second time I've been here. Both times we got the Chef's Choice Tapas. Everything is so tasty, beautifully delivered and plentiful. Also, unlike most places it is less busy around 7 when the theater goers leave.

We thorughly enjoyed our meal last night. There was such a great variety of dishes, something for everyone. We loved the various Negroni options and the bread was out of this world from a local bakery. Our waiter was amazing and so attentive. We tried many delicious dishes based on his recommendations.

A good place for a light dinner before the theater. The food was good, the service was initially sluggish but once a server brought us menus and asked for our order the service was excellent.

We dined pre-theater and made a 5:30 reservation for a 7:30 show. Timing was just right. Had the menu del dia- the chef’s tasting menu. It was a good value- for $49 per person we got about a dozen different Tapas and nibbles including deserts. Hits: the salt cod croquette was tasty and crunchy, not overly salty. The smoked salmon on toast was wonderful- maybe the best bite of the night. Garlic shrimp were flavorful and well cooked. The empanada appetizer was a yummy mix of flavors and textures. The deserts were both unique and tasty bites. Slight misses: the tortilla was a bit too salty. The pesto carrots were cold rather than warm/room temp. Neither my husband nor I is a fan of deviled eggs, so we skipped those though they looked very pretty. My only request would have been to see a list of what was being served in the tasting menu before we ordered- turned out to be too much food for us to finish.

The food is great here - amazing attention to detail, and really thoughtful presentation. I love the interior design as well, with the beautiful green tile; it makes you feel like you've stepped into a secret hideaway.

La Bande is very loud but very well located for a show at the Orpheum. We had a 5:45 reservation and just barely made the 7:30 show because the service was so slow. The food was quite good, especially the bread (from Arsicault) and the crispy potatoes. Like life, this place has some good points and some not-so-good points.

We went before attending theater at the Orpheum. The only issue is walking through a square that is mainly populated with the unhoused, so getting there is scenic… Once at the restaurant, you don’t even realize where you are and the ambience and food were excellent!! It’s Tapas so 4 of us got to sample a bunch of items! Everything was delicious!! Would definitely go back before or after theater.

The food was creative and fresh. Drinks also. Perfect for a pre-show dinner and really enjoyed El Menu del Dia. The chefs tapas selections were generous and varied. My favorite were the gambas. Also enjoyed the Negroni on draft and the Spanish wine from my favorite region, Ribera del Duero. Definitely will return and share with friends.

We always enjoy tapas. We enjoyed our dinner, but found the portions to be small, including the wine pours. We also would have like more vegetable offerings.

Hands down the best garlic shrimp I’ve ever had and I’ve had a lot of shrimp in my life. It was so fresh, salted to perfection, cooked just long enough and out to our table hot. The bread is outstanding, tuna belly the bomb, crispy potatoes excellent. Loved the squash and sunchoke although not the star of the night. The iberico ham was good, but not my favorite dish. We had reservations right when they opened- so we got there 5 minutes early- could not determine where the entrance was- (It was blocked by metal half walls and tall plants- no signage at all- so we walked around the building to the entrance to the hotel lobby- the door person came out and said there was no entrance from within the hotel and to walk further around and enter through Charmaine’s entrance. The door person at the Charmaine’s line and entrance said to walk aroun the build and would ‘see the entrance’. walked around again, got back to the lobby, who finally let us in and led us down long hallway to the entrance from within the hotel..ugh- needless to say, this colored our initial opinion. I mean how hard is it to educate your employees with the correct info/directions? and to have signage? AMbiance cute outdoors, super kind server, most of the items(tapas) were good, the homemade garlic aioli and hot sauce were amazing- some were a miss- the pork shoulder and beans(like soup-not shareable)the potatoes were boring

La Bande is a tapas restaurant in the Proper Hotel on Market St. It's about a block from the Civic Center BART station and a block and a half from the Golden Gate Theatre, a perfect venue for a light dinner before a show. The Garlic Shrimp is my favorite. My husband really likes the white beans and pork shoulder. They have an excellent selection of wines, beer, and mixed drinks.
