Kuuk Ratings and Reviews
We had the tasting menu with paired drinks. The pumpkin appetiser and the pumpkin and goats cheese starter were very good. It came with a bottle of dark beer to share with my partner. The prawn in the next course was not cooked and had to be sent back. The French sparkling wine had lost its sparkle as it was the end of the bottle. The next course of maize cake in black bean soup was nice but the French Bordeaux rose was the end of the bottle so not nice. The sea bass cenote dish was fresh tasting and would have gone well with a newly opened bottle of Chenin Blanc/ Chardonnay from Ensenada. The meat dishes were good. The Ensenada red was an interesting mix of Cabernet, Tempranillo and Merlot; again, a newly opened bottle would have tasted better. Is pairing drinks an expensive (to the customer) way of disposing of old wine? The couple at the next table ordered the ‘paired’ drinks with their tasting menu and were served different wines; the only similarity being that they too were served the end of bottles. The waiter was lovely but working beyond his competence; he explained the food well but could not say how the wine would complement it. We would have really enjoyed the food paired with wine from Mexico. The food was tasty and inventive. If we were to visit again we would order a bottle of Mexican wine as the pairing did not work for us. The meal cost over 5000 pesos with a tip.
We are staying in Merida for a couple of months and as we searched great restaurants we had to try, Kuuk came at the top of the list. We were absolutely blown away by the creative pairings, the delicious twists on traditional Yucatanean dishes and the superb service. We are going back next week for the full tasting as we stuck to the a la carte menu and I know we missed some outstanding dishes.
If you are anywhere in the Yucatan area, do not miss Kuuk. You won’t regret it!
Our second time at the restaurant. Our first time, we chose the tasting menu which was terrific. This time, we opted for the À la carte. The appetizers were very good, the mains were so-so (the octopus was chewy which is not acceptable in this level of restaurant). The desserts were very good.
Service is excellent for Merida. If I were to compare it to other restaurants around the world, the service could be improved. The noise level of the music is a little loud, but it seems to please the younger clients.
The wine list is great ! Many choices from Mexico and South-America.
I would still recommend this restaurant. I just hope that this is not a sign of a downward slope (like several good restaurants in Merida), but just a one off.
I went to celebrate my weeding anniversary because it was revised as Romantic place. It is not.
The building is beautiful. The meal is outstanding (rare but excellent). The service as average, nothing special. The meal worth the price. I had problems with wine selection (all what I asked for was not in the inventory) The sommelier had to suggest a wine (excellent one) and make me a discount to be in similar price of those I had selected. This was an excellent point any way.
But.... if you are asking a special service for a special occasion, please confirm with them as often as possible to avoid a "surprise" like I received. I have to say that They did all the necessary to compensate this mistake. Well done guy!
The venue is great, an old house on Paseo Montejo (downside, it sits next to Walmart, but the inside of the house is beautiful). The pairing menu is a comprehensive offering of Yucatan inspired dishes delivered through very creative techniques and details. The pairings with wine and beer are good - note: not outstanding. Good. The food is well prepared, with the right combinations of flavors and keeping the traditional touches of yucatecan cuisine (my grandma was from Merida so I know yucatecan food). The only thing I rated below 5 stars was service. Tasting menus should be served at the right pace, so you are not hurrying eating or gulping the accompanying wine or beer. This time, the tempo was too quick for us. Still enjoyable, but a few courses were brought way too fast. It is not cheap. It costs the same as the upscale restaurants in Mexico City, which is unusual for Merida. Was it worth it? Absolutely, but I would have to check if the tasting menu has changed before I book another visit.
Extremely innovative cuisine. 11 course tasting menu was amazing. The first course served with the outside cold and the inside hot blew me away....a trick to see!
We did not like our first table and were initially told we could not move for no good reason. Fortunately we persisted and moved to a better table.
We do agree with previous reviews that the tables are too austere, and should have some kind of centerpiece besides a candle & add tablecloths.
We do not think it was too expensive as we had 11 courses with a wine and beer pairing plus a 15% gratuity for US$285.
I have posted many photos on Facebook showing the pairings.
Fabulous modern expression of Yucatan & Mexican cuisine in a beautiful, elegant but not stuffy setting. Superb cocktails in an elegant bar, great menu from cocktails through desert. We loved everything about the restaurant and the chance to dress up a bit- I suggest elegant cocktail attire :-) Start at about 8 in the bar, then move to the tasting menu.
Kuuk was an elegant and impressive restaurant. The menu boasted items of Yucatan authenticity, presented in a modern format. The flavors were impeccable and precisely balanced. The atmosphere was cool and calm. Service was professional and kind. Highly recommended.
Had the tasting menu. Not all of it was a knockout, but it was varied, intricate, told a story and was beautifully presented. Served by friendly staff in a fantastic villa setting. Not a cheap meal, but was worth spending money on.
Highest Quality presented with a great eye for detail! We took the tasting menu and it was all served in an extraordinarily way! Very friendly waiters all topped with a private tour through the kitchen and their own "lab" trying out new ideas. All in all a great night out worth traveling all the way from Frankfurt, Germany
The attitude of the girl at the reception was not friendly at all, as if the world does not deserve her. The food is too sophisticated, more than expected or required. When we left nobody was at the door and it was raining. Prices are too high considering service provided. I can't believe that tables do not have table cloths.
Ku'uk is an experience not just a restaurant. We had the tasting menu which was like a vacation within a vacation. Even the plates are designed specifically for each course. Each tasting was artful in presentation and innovative while also delivering tastes that were clearly distinct in each dish. The service was impeccable -- topped with a tour of the kitchen and lab. The dining room is quiet but not stiff -- my 12-year old son was comfortable and enjoyed each course!
Very good options on the menu. You must go 7 days to try every dish. We were 8 people dining and everyone ask for a different plate, and everything was superb.
Very different food.
It is expensive but after the experience it is not that important.
Bon appetite !
