It is located on the first floor of the same townhouse with Kajistu, which quietly nestles on a tree-lined street close to Grand Central Station.
The restaurant serves authentic Japanese food with finest seasonal ingredients from Japan as well as local farmers.
The menu is more casual than that of Kajitsu, consisting of easy-to-choose a la carte dishes.
The signature dishes include the house-made soba noodles with seared duck, wagyu beef donburi, and the Kyoto style saba sushi, which was featured by the New York Times.
Our background music playlist was curated by Ryuichi Sakamoto, and was also featured in an article by the New York Times.
Beef tendon stew, deep fried tofu, fried onion and scallion in a hot house made curry broth
Soba noodles, scallion, wasabi, nori and ginger served with chilled dashi dipping broth
Thank you for very good food and so on!
We will go again.
Always feels like being back in Japan for an hour.
Every detail is perfect
Exceptionally Great Food, excellent service.
The food reminds me of Kyoto every visit. The bento uses seasonal ingredients, prepared using a variety of techniques, presented beautifully. If you didn't know which season it was, the bento would tell you. Soba is always excellent, from the texture of the noodles, to the taste of tsuyu and condiments. Lastly, the wagashi available at Kokage Cafe are not only tasty but are edible pieces of art.
Excellent experience as usual
The food was worth the price and the ambience were good. The food is also delicious. Just happens that on that specific night, we bumped into a table of a very rowdy and obnoxious group. It ruined the experience with me and my friend. Other than that, the waiters and waitress' were very nice and tried to be accomodating. They apologized for the group as well.
Would recommend this place to friends!
The atmosphere was very serene and quiet, especially due to to Covid restrictions. The waiter was extremely professional and the cuisine excellent- authentic, creative at times and simple at others, with top notch ingredients. It can get expensive but it is totally worth it. A true gem.
I would like to give some gift lunch to me since it was a day off.
Great food, perfect service in en environment of calm and serenity that we love.
Wonderful experience and thoughtful service. Felt very safe and satisfied.
Cannot go wrong here. One of few places where you get to choose what you want to eat at fine dining level.
It is very nice seasonal japanese restaurant near Grand Central Station.
Amazing food and service.
Went there to have Toshikoshisoba which is Japanese tradition to have soba on New Year’s Eve. Food was good, but took more than 20 minutes to order a drink. I understand this is a place to relax and go slow, but I don’t understand why it took so long to even take an order when there were only four groups of guests at that time...
Favorite new restaurant. Every aspect of this restaurant is incredible.
loved it; it was peaceful; special; delicious; unique items from Tokyo that took it to the next level!
This is a exceptional dining experience. The quality of everything is extremely high, from the food to the service to the ambiance. I've eaten at both of their restaurants, Kokage an Kajitsu. They are top notch examples of carefully prepared Japanese temple food. I left feeling healthy and alive .... So good!
It was great. Food is great, silent, accurate service. Strongly recommend it.
Authentic and delicious.
Love this authentic Japanese restuarant.
Honestly, I don't know what happened. In past years, many times, the service and food have been nothing short of terrific. This time... well... I dunno what happened but the food and service was disappointing.
Very precious place. High end ‘izakaya’. High quality food and beverage.
Very good, authentic japanese food, fantastic value and we loved the kajitsu playlist
Wow. This meal was spectacular in every way. Michelin-grade service, presentation and quality, but at a reasonable (for a nice Manhattan restaurant) price. I can’t say enough good things about this place. The food was fantastic, traditional Japanese cooking that one doesn’t see at most Japanese restaurants. Things like preserved roe that is aged so it tastes like fine Parmesan, or made-to-order stew/soups of octopus and house-made tofu. Fantastic, very, long sake list. Relaxed refined ambiance that feels chill enough for a Tuesday.
Complicated menu not well explained
It was very special
Great foods. Great and quick service. You can have a 30 min of heaven within your busy work day.
It was all very aesthetic. But there should more effort in the quality of the food rather than the design.
Great service, food is okay, but too expensive. The waitress bring us a bill while we are still finishing the conversation.
Everything was perfect. I felt like I was in Japan. Please keep doing this.
great vibe , great for a pre concert dinner.
I had two guests, and they were very impressed. Great food, sake, tableware, and service. This is my favorite place. I would like to visit more often.
I went to the restaurant for food along with music. But unfortunately there was a backpacked dad with two young girls with uncontrollable noises which resulting I couldn’t enjoy the music as I would be. 😞
this was excellent - stark ambiance, friendly efficient and knowledgeable service. Lunch menu was varied, with option for prix fix at $55.00 per person. Flavors and combinations of textures very unusual..
Nice quiet space. I wish the prices are little lower for lunch
Perfect restaurant. Everything, from the food to the glassware, has been thought through extensively. Amazing ambiance. One of the most special restaurants in the city. Sakamoto’s playlist ties the whole experience together. Does not have to be too expensive if you don’t make it so.
Authenticity, from freshly sliced ginger root, real wasabi, to homemade wheat protein. Wonderful atmosphere with authentic imported Japanese furniture. Fantastic dining experience.
