Koi Fine Asian Cuisine & Lounge Ratings and Reviews
Service and food were very good. We all enjoyed our meals. Portions were very plentiful. The edamame they brought to the table right after we sat down was a nice touch. We all had the three course dinner special (choice of soup, sushi roll and a stir fry dish, chosen from a limited preset listing) which was a great value.
Ask for Raul! Our server made my father’s night fantastic. He was very attentive and professional. We came with a big group and he continued to serve us with a smile. The rest of the staff were also very pleasant and accommodating. Their Homestyle Bean Curd was delish!
I love sushi, my wife Chinese food, so Koi is perfect for us as they serve both. Always love it here except this time our waiter was a little obnoxious in his attempts to be funny and even though we told him we weren’t in a rush he did everything to try and flip the table. Had he not his tip would have more than made up for it.
Love this place! Always excellent food. This is upscale Chinese and Japanese - Sushi. Quality ingredients and you can order low fat, gluten free options. Waiter was the BEST. Ask for John. First thing he asked is if any in party had food allergies they should know about. We didn’t but I know this can be a challenge for those that do. Love that we can use Open Table bc this is a popular restaurant. Carey out and lunch specials also awesome!!! Love you Koi!!!
I usually don’t review negative situations, but in this case I experienced worst service ever. 20 minutes for the beer, and then another 25 for the soup. The answer of the guy who took the order ?
I m just taking the order...someone else is responsible for the food delivery. Are u kidding me ? Never heard such anormality...
For dinner I would give Koi 4 stars, but my experience was very different at a recent lunch. Because I have usually been thrilled with Koi for dinner, I invited a dear friend for a special birthday lunch thinking that it would be a great place to celebrate. It fell down badly in my usually uncritical eyes.
We ordered the lunch special which seemed quite reasonable. The miso soup came out and before we had two spoons eaten, our entrees were upon us. The maki roll that came as an appetizer then came after all of the other dishes were there, giving us three dishes at one time. Maybe not a problem at times, but it made it hard to relax over a meal and enjoy our food hot.
We ordered two teas which turned out to be 7 dollars a pot. The food was salty and not up to Koi standards. The server forgot that it was my friends birthday and I had to remind him after he brought the check. He was sweet, but either very new or having a bad day. The worst for me was that I get sick when I eat peppers (the vegetable) in any form and I asked if there were peppers in the dish that I ordered. Very clearly stating that I get sick from them. And my dish came loaded with peppers which weren't mentioned in the menu description either.
The plus was that the waiter was sweet and likeable; he replaced the dish; he did bring out the birthday candle with some cookies; he apologized. But overall, lunch is not Koi's strong suit.
We had a business celebration dinner at Koi. The food was outstanding! The service was mediocre/poor. We waited 15 minutes before ordering, and then waited 20 minutes after everything was done before getting our check. The food and vibe were very good though.
In the interest of fairness, this evening dining experience occurred on Labor Day when the restaurant may have been short-staffed. However, if our experience was shared by other patrons, the owner should consider closing the restaurant on holidays. The food, mostly sushi and a couple of chinese dishes were mediocre at best. The service was beyond poor: inordinate delays in receiving drinks, appetizers and entrees (the sushi entrees arriving late but a good 10 minutes before the chinese entrees); no water refills; waiters were no where to be seen. At various times, the noise level was deafening, making it very difficult to carry-on a conversation. Don't expect to return any time soon.
It was very noisy the plates were crashing and the room is very live. The white tuna maki was extremely salty - before the soy sauce - so much that I could not eat it. They took it off the bill but did not offer anything else. Very polite server. Won't go back
This was the 2nd visit to KOI. The first time was with a party of 10 and the second was a small intimate group of 4. The waiter (John) was fantastic and remembered me from my previous visit. Service was outstanding, the food was very well prepared & presented, and the wait staff assisting John were invisible but magically appeared any time anything was needed or when dishes needed to be replaced. It is now one of my absolute favorite restaurants and plan to return on a regular basis.
I have dined at Koi before and the food is fantastic. This time the kitchen was very slow but after speaking with the manager he resolved it as quickly as he could and was incredibly professional in how he handled the situation. There are lots of good restaurants. Sometimes something can go wrong anywhere but what separates the best restaurants from the rest is how they set up when there is a problem. I was most impressed and look forward to my next time in Evanston eating here again. Food is great and the management is the utmost in professionalism.
The service was the worst.. waiter never came to see if everything was ok or if we needed anything... it took 30 minutes to get the check... didn't have silverware and couldn't find anyone to get it.. food cold but nobody to even tell ... and lastly it took 30 minutes to get our car from valet...
Huge/interesting Asian menu, representing many Chinese provinces, along with excellent sushi and a few Thai dishes. Slightly pricey, but portion sizes are generous and quality is high. Nice atmosphere, but the main dining room is extremely noisy any more than half full, which it almost always is. Not all of the servers are well-versed in specific preparations/ingredients, so if that's an issue for you, ask them to check with the kitchen.
It wasn't very busy on the Sunday night at 6:30 when our party of 5 arrived so we were surprised to be seated in an empty, windowless back room. We seem to have been forgotten as we had to leave the table to find a waiter to take our order. After a good wait, the apps arrived but no drinks. We had to ask where they were. We continued to have to flag down staff for the remainder of the evening. Even though the food was wonderful, the terrible service was enough not to want to go back. Very disappointing!
We had visitors from out of town and decided to have dinner at Koi. My guests were very happy with the food, the service, and the price. One caution-- it is very noisy. Hard to have a conversation when things are in full swing.
I would not recommend it for people who have hearing difficulties. Wish they would devise a Quiet Corner for seniors and noise-averse food-lovers.
Pros: Fantastic food with great menu of options. My cocktail was delicious, too.
Cons: It was incredibly loud, as they fit too many tables into a small space. My date and I were shouting at each other just to hear what the other was saying. Our server wasn't personable at all. He seemed uninterested in talking to us, so I felt uncomfortable asking questions.
Everything was fresh and delicious. We had
Lo Mein vegetables which were very tasty. Also shrimp with walnuts that happened to be delicious. We had a special with eggplant and chicken that was outstanding. I shared these dishes with two other people and there was plenty of food for everyone. The service was attentive and nice. I am looking forward to going again.
It was ok. Our waitress wasn't great. Maybe if we had a better server we would be abt to return. The table next to us seemed to have someone more interested in their job and probably had a meal suited to their requests. The bus person and hostess were both very accommodating and the food was good.
The kitchen and wait staff need to get their act together. There were 4 of us. One person received their starter at least 5 minutes after the others were served. One person received their entee more than 5 minutes before anyone else at the table was served.
The food is excellent, the prices are reasonable, but the lack of attention to service spoils the dining experience.
