Was so excited to have Dim sum on a Sunday! But.... pathetic!!
I had the Orange Beef, my ladyfriend had something I cannot pronounce. :) When she asked for recommendations, a very knowledgeable young man came over and helped her with choices. The wait staff were professional and checked on our table often. The food was excellent, the ambiance great with a mix of young and old patrons and the price was moderate.
I only wish the restaurant was closer to my home, I would goon a regular basis if it were..
Outstanding service and food. We had significant food restrictions in our group, and the server was so knowledgeable and eager to help. The food was also delicious! I had only had sushi there before, which was great, but we all tried cooked food this time, and everyone loved theirs. Great atmosphere, warm, knowledgeable and accommodating staff, and fantastic, fresh food.
We are regulars at Koi; it's one of our family's favorite restaurants for excellent food, huge portions, at very reasonable prices. I want to take the opportunity to give a special shout-out to our server John, who took care of our table during our most recent visit. We brought with us a group of friends who had not been to Koi previously. John walked them through the entire menu, answered all their questions, and made excellent recommendations based on their expressed preferences. He could not have been more attentive and welcoming.
I met a friend at Koi. I received a coupon for one dim sum dish, so we opted to share dim sum. We ordered 5 dishes and one was free. The food was tasty and came in a reasonable amount of time. Our server admitted he was relatively new and he didn't know much about the menu, particularly the teas. However, what he didn't know, he went back and asked about. When we had a mishap with one of the tea strainers, he brought a new pot, then he accidentally refilled our tea pots with cold water and then replaced them. All in all the experience was just fine. I liked the duck, and the barbecue pork buns. The scallion pancakes were a little oily for my taste. The wrappers on the shrimp dumplings were a little stiff.
It was great! Complementary edamame, 20% off your first order on yelp, they had a chinese new year dragon performance (we just got lucky that was happening!!), and the chicago sushi roll was delicious!!!
I love Koi, for when I need a quick bite and for hanging out with friends. Five of us had dinner on this particular occasion because we wanted to see the Lion Dance, which Koi holds annually to celebrate the beginning of the Chinese New Year. It was a great experience.
Had a great time on our first date. She loves the place and food. Price of amazingly reasonable. The dessert was fantastic too. Will come back again.
Overall, food was very tasty. My chicken wings felt a little "soft" so I was concerned they were a tad undercooked but after reheating the next day in oven, they were perfect. I hated the restaurant required a minimum of four people for the prix fix Restaurant Month menu. Would have loved to get it but couldn't with my party. Finally, my drink was kind of weak but it was tasty. Just leaving notes since you asked for feedback but, overall, I like Koi and will be back.
Phenomenal sushi! Moved here from
The city and this is my favorite place!!!
I just can't recommend this restaurant anymore. Our waitress messed up our drink order (only two of us) and then we had to wait over an hour for our meals. Unbelievable. She wasn't even going to say anything except I looked MAD. She gave us some lame excuse about the kitchen focusing on delivery customers while people in the restaurant dining there didn't seem to matter. Even our busboy was concerned about our long wait. I wish I had given him the tip instead of the waitress. The waitress did end up giving us a 25% discount but she still didn't seem to care. As we left, I complained to the hostess but she didn't seem to care. Anyhow, we're done with Koi. There are MANY more Asian food options in Evanston and Chicago.
WE had planned a quick lunch but did not finish for 2 hours. That is an inordinate amount of time for a quick little lunch. The soup that was served steaming but only luke warm to the taste and there was only ONE wonton in a huge bowl of soup.
I had been to a networking event at Koi before and thought the appetizers I had there were pretty good. My girlfriend and I decided to go for Valentine's and it was exceptional. The food was delicious and our waiter was great. He had excellent recommendations and was also just very pleasant all around. He recommended coming back on the weekend for their dim sum, which I think we will do soon!
Koi is one of the best Asian cuisine restaurants in Evanston. Service is great. Lots of good choices. Only disappointment is that they do no have egg rolls, only spring rolls which are not the same.
Food was delicious and love how the plates are broken out by the region in China. Service was quick and gave great suggestions. We will be back!
The staff was very lovely and the restaurant had a nice ambience. It was still busy by the time I got to it at 7:30pm. I felt so bad because my friend had an accident wasn't able to get there until almost 8:05, but the waitress was still super patient with us. I ordered one of their specialty sushis (the Lotus Bomb I believe) and it was absolutely delicious. I then followed it up with their cheesecake and enjoyed that as well. Overall, it was a good experience and I would recommend it for a nice date.
It was really relaxing and they took care of everything for our private event
We had a great time and dinner. The waiter was awesome; very knowledgeable on the menu and ingredients. We has 2 people with very specific food allergies and was VERY easy to accommodate the needs without compromising the choice of menu options.
Always a pleasant experience. John, our server, even remembered our fondness for Lychee Martini's. The DragonFire sushi is the best, warm and wonderful sauce and presentation. My advice...go there!
Made a reservation for 4. Met friends at the theater. They had no trouble at the last minute to change to 6. Very accommodating. Everyone enjoyed their food and the assortment of different Asian cuisines made ordering a pleasure: one had Japanese, 2 had Chinese and 2 had a variety. Will go back.
Great food, well timed.
My husband, kids and I went for my birthday, which I noted on the reservation. It all started well, with balloons at our table, which was a nice touch. Service then proceeded very slowly, which is tough with young kids. When we finally got to order dessert, we waited at least 15 minutes for it to arrive, at which point they’d decorated my daughter’s plate rather than mine and brought me the entirely wrong dessert. The waiter then blamed the person who brought out our desserts saying she’s new, but he clearly never ordered mine. After five more minutes when the kids were done with their desserts, my husband was told mine would be another 10 minutes, so he canceled the order and requested the bill immediately. It took another 5-10 minutes to get the bill, at which point the waiter made a point to say he’d taken something off. Turns out the only thing not on the bill was the dessert I never got. He then had the nerve, as I was leaving, to hand me a certificate for $25 off our next visit. I returned it. There will not be another visit. More than 2 hours after we walked in, we finally left. My husband noted our experience to the staff at the front, a conversation a manager walked into and then said nothing. There are plenty of options for dining in Evanston and the North Shore. Don’t bother with Koi.
Frequent guest. Tonight with the cold weather we were seated by the window. But there was a lot of cold air leaking through to the dining area. We needed to move to another table.
While the food was good enough, the service was horrendous. After receiving our drinks, we received our sushi order. Then there was a gap of -- no joke-- an hour before the rest of the meal was served. We asked our waitress repeatedly who kept reassuring us it was "just coming up." Baloney. I was embarrassed that I recommended this spot for dinner to our group. What a shame. And no effort on the restaurants part to acknowledge the issues. Won't be back.
Delicious authentic Asian food. Very testy and beautifully presented. Large portions.
Kudos to the staff for keeping service flowing through the evening because it was otherwise chaotic. Food was OK. Drinks were OK. Giving them a pass because it was so crowded.
We come here frequently because of the vast and interesting menu. This visit we came because Koi is one of the few neighborhood restaurants that is open on Christmas eve. Also, this time we had a gluten-free diner with us. On one hand, we thought that all of the entrées that are clearly marked GF are already gluten-free, but the waitress told us that was not the case: the “GF” means that the item CAN be prepared gluten-free but you have to ask. That’s really odd and unintuitive.
We ordered GF versions of our favorite items and, while they were good, they tasted much different and more salty than the usual preparations. Not sure why that is the case. Also, they seem to have taken off many vegetarian versions of popular items since the last time we visited, like the pot stickers. Perhaps they had a more limited menu for Christmas eve, but the waitress didn’t think so.
Our table of nine had a great experience at Koi. First and foremost, huge credit goes to our wonderful server. Though his name now escapes me, I will surely remember his friendly, patient, and attentive service. The food was a bit uneven (sesame chicken was oddly sweet, miso soup not hot enough) but there was certainly something there for everyone to enjoy. My sushi was great.
Excellent service and good food.
Great food. Great service. Our server (I forgot his name, sorry) was fantastic.
Sorry to say that while the service was excellent, my meal was very average- not nearly as good as when I've had the same meal in the past.
Service and food were very good. We all enjoyed our meals. Portions were very plentiful. The edamame they brought to the table right after we sat down was a nice touch. We all had the three course dinner special (choice of soup, sushi roll and a stir fry dish, chosen from a limited preset listing) which was a great value.
Many choices on the North Shore, but Koi is both the best sushi and Chinese food. Ever since more Chinese students have attended Northwestern there have been more food options. Koi reins supreme in both flavor, quality and freshness.
Ask for Raul! Our server made my father’s night fantastic. He was very attentive and professional. We came with a big group and he continued to serve us with a smile. The rest of the staff were also very pleasant and accommodating. Their Homestyle Bean Curd was delish!
Our server, Matt, was wonderful! Food was delicious and service was great. Overall awesome experience!
We went for an early dinner. The service by John was impeccable. He made awesome recommendations and brought a bit of humor as well. The food we delicious and I look forward to my next visit.
I love sushi, my wife Chinese food, so Koi is perfect for us as they serve both. Always love it here except this time our waiter was a little obnoxious in his attempts to be funny and even though we told him we weren’t in a rush he did everything to try and flip the table. Had he not his tip would have more than made up for it.
Love this place! Always excellent food. This is upscale Chinese and Japanese - Sushi. Quality ingredients and you can order low fat, gluten free options. Waiter was the BEST. Ask for John. First thing he asked is if any in party had food allergies they should know about. We didn’t but I know this can be a challenge for those that do. Love that we can use Open Table bc this is a popular restaurant. Carey out and lunch specials also awesome!!! Love you Koi!!!
A bit expensive; my wife wasn’t impressed with her honey chicken. Mongolian Beef ok. Miso soup good but not hot enough. Enough sake soothes the soul ...
