About Kipos Greek Taverna
Kipos means garden in Greek. It’s a taverna, where friends and strangers gather every day to share thoughts, a glass of wine or two, raki, beer, and often Ouzo. Mezedes (small plates) coming to your table, keep the conversation going.
Kipos is a reflection of owner, Giorgios Baktasias' childhood: fresh and robust village foods cooked in wood-burning ovens, honoring old and modern recipes alike. Kalos Orisate (welcome) to our home.

Kipos Greek Taverna Ratings and Reviews
Service was terrible. The waiter seemed very nice and accommodating, but he was never available. There were numerous mistakes in our orders and we were spending most of our evening trying to flag down anyone to come to the table and help us. They seem to have waiters absolutely everywhere, but never at our table. The food was fine, but I won’t go back again.
Food was good, but not exceptional. Calamari was overcooked and came with no sauce, and it really needed something. Service was very good on a crowded evening. Seating is too close, very difficult to get to and from table without bumping into people seated at nearby tables.
three of us met to participate in Restaurant Week - and two of the group had specific dietary restrictions, which we described to the server. One was vegan and one has celiac so gluten free was required. There were misprints and misinformation provided to us regarding what foods on the price fixe were gluten free, so that person did not order from the price fixe menu. The person who was vegan tried a few times to order items off the regular menu but they came back wrong. A simple greek salad which was ordered without feta cheese, no olives and extra tomatoes with dressing on the side came out with none of those items delivered as requested. She asked for a potato dish and 20 mins later was told they were out of potatoes, but they had french fries. Finally she was able to order one of the eggplant dips, but the pita bread never showed up.. until we were almost done with the lunch! The server was frankly overwhelmed and distracted. The restaurant manager came to help clear things up, and comped our desserts, which was appreciated. Our requests weren't all that complicated!! This restaurant needs to work harder on providing service to people with special dietary needs.
First visit. I got the lamb chops and my wife got the salmon. Both were outstanding. Not being familiar with Greek wines, we needed a wine recommendation. Waiter got three recommendations from the bartender. Nice to have options. The one we selected was perfect. Appetizers and bread were great. Desserts were excellent. The waiter, Ilias, was friendly and attentive. We'll be back.
Daughter's request to celebrate #21 birthday in your restaurant...interesting that none of us drank any alcohol for the celebration. The staff was outstanding. The hostess was welcoming and accommodated our personal birthday cake. The waiter was equally gracious and responsive. The food was delicious. Every one of us enjoyed the food. The interior is bright and pleasant. We will be back. Thank you.
Our salmon was to come with orzo which is not a pasta my partner wanted. We asked for a vegetable exchange and I quote "...a hard NO." The manager did help us make the exchange, we got a nice kale instead. All was great until the bill came. We were charged twice for our non alcohol Virgin Mary. We had one, charged for two. When we asked for our bill to be corrected they said that since the drink was straight up (no ice) they charged double. 9$ for a virgin mary was unfair in my opinion. I am not sure I could drink 9$ worth of tomato juice at one meal
I have been to Kipos several times and have always loved the experience. I made reservations for myself and two friends, one of whom had never been before. While the ambiance was great (as always) both the food and the kitchen service was not great. I have always LOVED all the food I have ordered in my previous visits, and this time the dishes (both that I ordered and that my friends ordered) were just ok. And the kitchen took a very long time getting our order out! Both of these two things I have not experience before. It has been over a year sine I have been to Kipos, but I am hoping it was just a fluke. Our server was very friendly and attentive. He tried his best to answer our many questions. We still enjoyed our evening despite these hiccups.
We enjoyed Kipos very much. The food and service were both very good. The only negative is that the place is very loud which made it difficult to communicate between the 5 of us without raising our voices.
A great place to eat in downtown Chapel Hill. We will definitely visit again.
I just realized that I have never reviewed Kipos! One of our favorite restaurants in Chapel Hill. We are sure to have wonderful food, service, and ambience, like a mini vacation in Greece. We dined with our adult daughter this time. We shared 3 delicious salads including an oyster salad that was on the list of specials that evening. We also had 2 different fish entrees- the tuna, and the salmon, both were exquisitely prepared. Our server was excellent. We enjoyed the live Greek music. George, the owner is very kind and always stops by to say hello to guests, and brings out complimentary desserts or other things to share. We always leave feeling happy and satisfied.
Had a reservation. Hostess was friendly and accommodating to our not wanting to sit directly in front of the live musician’s amp. Server Ilias was excellent! Starter courses (sausage & gigante beans; marinated shrimp; fried kalamari) were fabulous but kalamari was too salty. Navy bean soup du jour was fresh and hearty. All entrees delicious and appropriately portioned; moussaka & patstitsio a la carte; pricing modest. Deserts wildly oversized and under priced but also delicious. Toward the end of the evening server and hostess danced the zorba, entertaining. Would recommend but for ownership/mgmt ardent and vocal (bordering on instigating) support of Duke.
