Kipos Greek Taverna
Kipos is a reflection of owner, Giorgios Baktasias' childhood: fresh and robust village foods cooked in wood-burning ovens, honoring old and modern recipes alike. Kalos Orisate (welcome) to our home.

Kipos Greek Restaurant is our favorite!! We celebrated my husband’s birthday and everything was perfect!!
Well, we ended up with too much food because we couldn't resist a bunch of the mezes! #notarealproblem They were all terrific. We were too stuffed for dessert, but the waiter gave us a baklava to take home because it was my husband's birthday. The food is out of this world, the service is always great, and the ambiance is pretty much ideal. This is one of our favorite restaurants in Chapel Hill.
Food was great, service was outstanding! We will come back for sure!
Space and ambiance was very nice, but the food was even better. We ordered many items from the menu and nothing disappointed. Highlights were the meatballs and the shrimp saganaki. They are definitely musts. The sauce the shrimp were in was one of the best flavors I have tasted this year. Ask for extra pita!
Sunday nights seem to be quiet but it just meant great service. Fun and yummy
Tried the octopus salad and it was delish! Great time celebrating my friends bday!!
Kipos was wonderful, as always. The Grilled Octopus was the best we've ever had. Love the atmosphere, and we enjoyed our server, Fareed, very much.
The food is delicious and authentic. I am Greek, grew up eating Greek food and when I am in town I always eat at Kipos. Atmosphere is lovely, wait staff wonderful, and food is delicious.
Stacey, you've made our day! Thanks so much for these kind words. We can't wait to have you back at our table next time you're in town!
Mother’s Day brunch was over-priced and service was disappointing.
$35 for a glorified breakfast with eggs and large pans of food that sat out was not pleasing.
Our waiter was very pleasant but forgetful and not very attentive for the minor requests we made.
To add insult to injury a 21.4% gratuity was added to the bill - this was a self-serve buffet so only beverages were table served. We like the ambience though have had better food, sadly we won’t be returning as it’s poor value for the money.
Yes, but not for graduation/Mother's Day because it felt like a cattle drive. I don't want to pay $35 for a meal, but have to wait in long lines to get to it. And once you finally got your food and sat down, it was cold. I'm not making a reservation there again for a big weekend like that.
Loved this place. Food was fantastic and authentic. We had the leg of lamb special. Bouzouki music played in the background. Patrons were dancing around the restaurant. It was a wonderful experience. Reminded me of being back in the Greek Islands
We take pride in our authentic Greek experience - no passport needed! Thank you for the stellar review. We look forward too having you at our table again soon.
The food was absolutely delicious and the hostess and waitstaff were very accommodating of all our requests. We order the saganaki, fried calamari, and fava dip. All were very good. My daughter ordered the fish stew and refused to share any of it because it was so good. My husband ordered the pastitsio and declared it the best he's ever had, even better than my mom's. (I'm of Greek heritage.) The desserts were outstanding. We ordered galaktombouriko, blueberry koulorakia, and the manouri cheesecake. The cheesecake was so good, we went back the next night just for coffee and dessert. It's light and fluffy and unlike any cheesecake any of us had ever had.
Thank you Valerie! You better not tell your mom how your husband feels about our Pastitsio or she may not like us very much! We are thrilled to hear that you all had such a wonderful time with us and we can't wait to see you again soon!
The restaurant was full, it being graduation weekend, but the level of service was top notch as well as the food! Great ambience. Will definitely return when visiting North Carolina again.
Alina, thank you for taking the time to leave a 5-star review! We look forward to your next visit with us.
Went on Friday night before UNC graduation. There was a party of 95 people sitting in the main dining area so it was extremely loud and busy. With that said, our server never forgot us, the food was hot and fresh, the entire staff was very friendly and attentive. Even the owner found time to come by and chat.
I eat here regularly and love the food and atmosphere. Maybe not during graduation weekend again.
We understand that Graduation Weekend can be a bit intense but we are so glad that you dinned with us and had such a wonderful experience. Thank you for the wonderful review & we look forward to having you at our table again soon.
I had out of town guests I wanted to impress. Decided on Kipos. It worked😄
We love out of town guests! Thank you for your review, we look forward to hosting you again soon!
Always good food, service and a good time! Recently celebrated a birthday with a large party - it was perfect! Thank you.
Thank you for choosing Kipos to celebrate your special occasion! We look forward to having you at our table again soon.
We enjoyed the delicious food and fabulous music! Our waitress was having an off night and there are not many shady spots on the patio. Make sure you go inside to listen to the live music.
Hi Jennifer, thanks so much for taking the time to write this review. Although we know that everyone has off nights here and there, we're sorry to hear that you experienced this during your visit. We love when guests share how much they enjoyed the music. We look forward to your next visit!
Great place for get together with various light fishes. Can be perfect for any occasion
Hi Anna, thank you for the lovely review! We look forward to hosting you again soon.
Fun atmosphere with music weekend evenings. Intriguing cocktails and great food.
We ate outside. Nice u til they do the dancing. Then the speaker over your head pumps out the music so load you can’t talk. Food good. Service slow
Hi Huck! Thank you for taking the time to write a review! We have live music starting Thursdays through the weekend at Kipos. We are sorry to hear that the service was slow. We hope that you come back to visit us soon!
Food and atmosphere were good but we had a unenthusiastic waiter. He only mentioned the specials after I asked him and his description was about as vague as it gets... trout with white beans.
He never asked anyone if they wanted another drink so one was all we got.
I’m reminded how important it is to have a good waiter and it’s impact on the meal. He pretty much wrecked the meal with his bad attitude.
Saga Ali was not cooked through and service was quite slow. Ambience was lovely.
We enjoyed lunch on Easter Sunday. The restaurant was packed but the wait staff was efficient, patient and hard working. Our waitperson, Sasha was delightful! She was helpful, engaging and attentive. We love the ambiance in the restaurant and out on the patio as well.
Good restaurant! But the food could be more authentic!!!
Kipos has a great atmosphere and wonderful food. We enjoyed all our dishes and the wait staff was attentive and polite. Highly recommend!
Great place, great food and affordable price. Great taste on salads and lamb
G.O.A.T.(Greatest of all time) Greek restaurant. Food is awesome , ambiance is prefect, staff is on it, music can't be beat, & a great overall experience !
While the food we ordered was very good with plenty of plant-based options to choose from. However it took us a very long time to see a waiter, to the point where one of us had to ask about it. There was also a situation where the waiter said the pita might not be vegan, so I requested that he check to be sure. I never got an answer, so I ate some sad carrot sticks with my spread. The pita recipe is not the fault of the restaurant, but the situation was very unclear and I wish that the pita was indicated vegan or not on the menu as other items are. Despite this, I had a really nice time and I do recommend it, but if you are vegan do be careful if ordering the pita!
Food was delicious. Unique flavors and perfect portion sizes. Restaurant music is very loud and there is dancing so go before 8:00 if you want a conversation
Always a fantastic time; great food; authentic ambiance. George and his siblings have one of, if not, the best Greek restaurants my family and I have dined; and this includes major cities through the US, Greece, and Cyprus. Axios!
I would recommend Kipos to a friend. Food was good an fresh. Get the whole snapper - it was awesome.
We sat at the bar while waiting for our table and the bartender recommended an excellent dry white wine from Santorini.
Our server was just perfect. My in-laws are visiting from Germany and he spoke a little German with them to clarify their order. I couldn’t have asked for more.
The food was delicious, as usual.
We will be back again soon!
They were very accommodating when our party went from 3 to 14 people. Server was super nice. Great food and a fun atmosphere!
This was a second visit for us; a birthday dinner for my wife. They seated us a quiet table in a little corner out of the boisterous and busy center of the dining area - just what I had asked for in our online reservation which was much appreciated. Our waiter, Hassad, was responsive and engaging. The food was "good" in our opinion and it was well-presented. It simply falls short of what I wouldl consider great, and that is stated as an avid cook (not chef). Admittedly, because I cook so often at home, I'm a critic (fair but tough) and I continue to find it amazing that we can spend $150 for an evening out to dinner for two. One martini, one bottle of wine, one appetizer, one salad, one entree, no dessert with tip. All in all a good meal in a lively and fun atmosphere.
I didn't answer yes or no on the recommendation because we have been to Kipos before and enjoyed our meal. Unfortunately, this time we were seated in the back room with friends where the noise level was the loudest I ever remember encountering in a restaurant. Conversation was well nigh impossible and consisted of our yelling occasional comments across the table at each other, rather than having any sort of a consistent, coherent conversation. It made dinner totally unacceptable as a social occasion. I don't ever plan on going back to Kipos again if we are to be stuck in that back room.
We have made our complaint to management, addressing it on our way out.
Favorite Chapel Hill establishment. Wait staff are amazing, and everything I have eaten is amazing!
Met daughter and sis in law for a pre theater show dinner. Festive, delicious, excellent service.
Great food attentive staff with the bonus of some proper live Greek music!
Authentic Greek food in a nice atmosphere! Last time we went there was live Greek music too. We love this place!
