About Kipos Greek Taverna
Kipos means garden in Greek. It’s a taverna, where friends and strangers gather every day to share thoughts, a glass of wine or two, raki, beer, and often Ouzo. Mezedes (small plates) coming to your table, keep the conversation going.
Kipos is a reflection of owner, Giorgios Baktasias' childhood: fresh and robust village foods cooked in wood-burning ovens, honoring old and modern recipes alike. Kalos Orisate (welcome) to our home.

Kipos Greek Taverna Ratings and Reviews
Decided to have brunch here for my birthday and a friend/couples anniversary. It was our first visit to this restaurant. The brunch was reasonably priced and there was a nice selection to choose from. I had the souvlaki on pita and enjoyed it. My friend had the egg and ham on croissant and she enjoyed that as well. The restaurant has a nice warm ambience and would be nice for a date or get together with friends. No complaints except that, given that they were told in advance of a birthday and anniversary, it would have been nice if they would have done something nice for us-a free appetizer to share or dessert would have been a nice gesture.
Best Greek food I have ever had! What a gem, tucked into a busy part of Chapel Hill. The only thing bad about it is that I would not go there on a weekend night or during a major sporting event, because it's hard and stressful to park in that area. But the restaurant is amazing!
Our last visit (and there have been many) in a word.....Perfect.
The staff and the food made this family engagement announcement event one to remember.
Thank you all for these memories that will stay with us.
We will see you again soon. If you have the chance to eat here, you must.
Every dish we tried was quite good. A fun vibe with live music at night. My only complaint was that I ordered what looked to be a fabulous salad early but it never arrived despite me inquiring about it a couple of times. It looked delicious as I saw it go by for others tables.
I finally just cancelled the salad order when our entrees arrived. There was an apology but it was treated as no big deal- explained as the salad guy just being busy.
To their defense, it was homecoming weekend and was busy, but not packed.
We will go back and try again. The wood grilled tuna was great as were the short ribs and lamb. They have a sheeps chees served “flaming” that is really good!
The food is rather basic. Everything was doused in olive oil. The flavoring and presentation are rather basic. The lamb riblets we ordered were dripping with fat. Some quality-control might be appreciated. The service and staff attentiveness is outstanding. However, my considered opinion is that there are better restaurants in Chapel Hill all within a stone's throw of Kipos. The restaurant scene is fast evolving and Kipos is not keeping up.
Extremely loud. It took a hour and 45 mins (1:45) to eat dinner. We waited 30 mins from sitting down until our 1st drink order arrived. It took 20 mins for our cheesecake to arrive and another 5 mins for the waiter to bring forks to eat it with. It's a cool atmosphere but don't go here if your hungry or thirsty.
Incredible as always! Kipos does everything beautifully: delicious Greek food, outstanding service, attentive staff & management, & charming ambiance. The restaurant is filled with fresh flowers, live music, fun open kitchen, romantic lights, & the buzz of family & friends breaking bread,. We always leave feeling happy & fulfilled!
Suggested by a friend. I was very, very happy with my dining experience at Kipos. The food was excellent. There are many standard Greek dishes, but they seem more authentic than what I'm used to finding. I was pleased with the creativity of the dishes. I've never had better Kalamaria. It was light and crispy and most importantly, tender - not rubbery. The stuffed grape leaves were very refreshing and came on a bed of delicious pickled vegetables.
The ambiance is somewhat nautical in nature - it almost felt as if I was dining on a ship. The exposed wooden beams and the pendulous light adding to that impression. Noise was moderate as diners began arriving for the evening.
The wait staff is excellent. Very attentive, but without being a bother. Our waiter was genuine in his suggestions when his opinion was asked for. I never wanted for a drink as they were always on top of refilling my glass or getting me another drink.
I would highly recommend Kipos. I plan on being back again with another friend at the end of this month.
We brought house guests there from out of town who appreciate good Greek food, and they were as delighted as we. The food was delicious (lamb and trout specials); the staff (Jana) VERY well trained and professional as well as warm and attentive, and the live bouzouki music delightful (not to mention even a bit of enjoyable Greek dancing in the aisles!).
We love going to Kipos! It can get pretty noisy and hectic on busy weekend evenings, but our last visit was at 5:30 on Sunday and it was quiet. The food is always delicious and plentiful, and it's a great gathering spot for a date or outing with friends. Our server was helpful and pleasant. Another nice evening at Kipos.
The food was flavorful and seemed reasonably authentic. The staff quickly responded to our request to reduce the volume so we could enjoy our conversations (we had seven people at one table). It was as pleasant as expected, and given their online ratings, our expectations were high. The wine list had a number of Greek selections.
A favorite local go-to. Classic and well-prepared mediterraneum food is always consistent. Offers lots of tasty spreads and appetizers that you can make a meal from. Excellent fish options. Don't miss the watermelon salad in the summer months and never pass up the chocolate mousse served atop a little Greek olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt. Delish. Nice Greek wine offerings. Service delivery is always cheerful and knowledgeable.
