Originally opened by Jane Vobe in 1772, this authentic reproduction public house serves up a transporting experience for the senses in Colonial Williamsburg. Everything is true to the time period at King’s Arms Tavern, from the fashion sported by servers to the pewter candlesticks—all adding to an air of colonial elegance. Inspired by 18th-century recipes, but with updates to suit 21st-century tastes, tuck in to a chophouse menu featuring prime rib, pork chops, and more.

ADA Accessible dining is available in the Purdie Kitchen. Please note this colonial building is separate from King’s Arms Tavern. Please check-in at the front, and our host will escort guests to the Purdie Kitchen.

These historic restaurants are over rated. They have no 'healthy' meals, all smothered in gravy and lots of carbs in everything. Once is enough to experience eating in these Taverns along with the traditional meals. But they need to consider having more healthy meals along with only a 'few' of those traditions from way-back-when! Once is enough!

We certainly enjoyed our time and will be back! The history explanations were great, the 24oz beer were awesome, and the food very flavorful. I had the prime rib and loved the horseradish combination of flavors. A little pricey however, overall great experience. Thank you

Was nice before the room filled up. There is no acoustic tile so became very noisy. Also, my husband is handicapped and had to walk a flight of stairs to use the bathroom. He fell on the last step coming down, but fortunately was not hurt. Parking is difficult. The food was delicious, but my husband cannot eat there in the future. The server was very courteous and knowledgeable.

Have eaten at the Historic Taverns a number of times but this was the first time post COVID. It appears the food quality has declined despite the skyrocketing prices. The Squash Soup was good but extremely salty & thin for a cream soup. I tried the vegetarian Onion Pie--quite bland with only potatoes & onions in it. The description on the menu says that egg is layered in the pie before baking but the server said that there is only a fried egg put on top before serving so I declined the egg. The service was very good. Like the fiddler that plays in each room but we only caught the end of his set as we were seated & he never returned. Would recommend only if eating the historic ambience is your priority.

From the time we were seated to the time we walked out the door, we were treated with historic facts, period music, period food, and polite staff. When we arrived it was light, but as the meal went on the room was light by candles. The waitress brought out bread with condiments of spiced ham, corn relish and butter. The spiced ham was awesome. My dinner companions ordered salad. I ordered the peanut soup. It was interesting. Not sure I’d order it again, but I’m glad I ordered it once. I ordered the Cornish Game Hens. They were very tasty. My husband ordered the prime rib which was cooked to his liking. They brought out horseradish with his meal which was hot, but I like that. Dessert was good. The food was good for the price. If you want a Colonial Menu with 21st taste considerations, I’d suggest making reservations.

Very interesting dining experience. Our server, John did a fabulous job. We enjoyed all of the history that came with the punch bowl drinks, the way butter and relish was served with bread, and just an overview of dining in the 18th century. The music was a nice treat. We had the shrimp as an appetizer which was delicious. We ordered stuffed salmon, a feature of the evening, and the pork shank. All of our dishes were very tasty. We were pleasantly surprised with the entire evening and experience. We would definitely return if in the area again.

For us, the best part was the food. We had the fish and the steak and both were excellent. The service was kind and pleasant but as noted below it did take a long time to have dinner. The bad parts 1. We don’t feel that the restaurant lived up to the historic and lively feel that the description on the website presents. We were stuck in the upper corner of the restaurant in a room with few tables and back against a window. There was no ambiance like the photos indicate and we didn’t feel like part of the “historic” tavern. 2. It was very cold. We went in late March and it was not warm outside but there was little or no heat within our area of the restaurant. We all wore our jackets and thank goodness for the oversized napkins which doubled as blankets. 3. We felt like we were placed in the area of the restaurant because we had kids - as did the other tables in our area. 4. The dinner took too long. From the time we were seated to leaving it was nearly 2.5 hours. It seems like perhaps that is the plan for all tables because those near us also dines for the same time - but it was too long given the other issues. 5. It was expensive. We knew the prices coming in but thought were we’re paying for the ambiance and intrigue of being in a historic building - but we didn’t get that feel. 6. We saw other areas of the restaurant that felt much more connected to the feeling and ambiance we were hoping for. Perhaps our experience was unique and other had an enjoyable time - but we certainly did not feel connected. 7. We weren’t greeted until more than 20 minutes after we sat down. Kids menus weren’t on the table so we had to use our phones to find the menu and explain to our kids. Overall, we hoped for a better experience as this didn’t deliver. For this reason, we cancelled our future reservation at Christiana’s Tavern as we anticipated the same issues.

Kings Arms is one of the historic taverns in the Williamsburg Historic Area. The food is themed to what diners would have eaten in the late 1700s. A must have is the peanut soup appetizer. Our party had a game pie, choat (pork shanks), trout and prime rib. All were excellent. Bread pudding for dessert, also excellent. It's not cheap, but well worth the price for the ambiance and the quality.

Everything we ate was fantastic, and the service and ambiance were equally outstanding. My husband had the jerk special, while I tried the recommended pork shank. Both were flavorful and amazing! The dessert of snow eggs was a new experience - tasty and very light-textured. Things that seemed colonial-era correct included a visiting harpist who played a couple of tunes in each dining room - truly magical! - and the steadily-dimming room as the fading daylight left only a few candles to see by. One disappointment was the lack of any hard cider on the menu, neither a sweet pub cider (e.g., Bold Rock) nor a dry cider listed among the wines. That would have been a great touch, both for historical accuracy and for flavor.

Incredible meal tonight at King's Arms Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg. From beginning to end, we were continually impressed. To accompany Bob's sassafras-made root beer and my Apple Jack old fashion, our server brought corn relish, Virginia ham pate and Sally Lunn bread. All historic recipes, as is everything on the menu. Our meals included peanut soup, mock turtle soup, game pye and jerk pork. Dessert was snow eggs (poached meringue with candied nuts) and chocolate torte. I don't usually go into detail, but this was an amazing experience in an historic house originally owned by Alexander Purdie, an early printer and editor, dating back to the mid-1700s with meals that could have been served nearly 400 years ago. The food was matched by the service from Lydia, who made sure Bob's bib was appropriately tied. As they say, when in Rome. ❤️🤍💙
