Kihon is a Japanese sushi restaurant located on Naples Island, Long Beach, California. Positioned right next to a host of other traditional restaurants, Kihon aims to provide a fusion of traditional Japanese dishes with a modern twist, focusing more on core ingredients such as fish and rice rather than sauces. Ate at Kihon for the 2nd time and it was great. The service is outstanding. We had the smoked octopus that was amazing and I don't like octopus. That being said, the presentation of this dish is amazing with real smoke when it is delivered. The thinly sliced octopus was flavorful and not chewy like larger pieces. The sashimi was like butter. Fresh, delicate and flavorful. This by far is the best Sushi Restaurant in the Naples/Belmont Shore area. It is not a party sushi roll establishment, instead being a purveyor of high quality sea food both raw and cooked. A must visit.

We went to Kihon during Dine Out Long Beach week. The Omakase special was amazing. The sashimi, sushi, tempura and Mochi Cocktail were so good that we are thinking about going back later this week. The wait staff is friendly, knowledgeable and efficient.

We have a subscription to Long Beach Opera, so looked for something interesting near the Beverly O’Neill Theater at the Convention Center. Kihon was perfect in every way. Wonderful food, excellent service and easy to park close by. The mark of any Japanese restaurant is how fresh the sashimi is, and this place is top rate!

We liked all the food, except the tempura ice cream. The tempura was under done. The service was very attentive and the food was really good.

My partner and I have been to Kihon a couple of times and, while it will remain on our list, it won’t be in heavy rotation. It’s a nice, family oriented restaurant. The service is extremely slow. The food is fine. I’m allergic to gluten, and they do have tamari if you ask (at no extra charge, for which I am very grateful), but ours came to the table well after the first plate of sushi was delivered. Our server said he could only find one bottle that was almost empty, but said he would bring us more when he found it. He didn’t. But a table of four near us got two brand new bottles. Additionally, the albacore nigiri came with a light sauce that contained soy sauce (which was not indicated on the menu). Thankfully, we noticed before I ate any. But it was also touching the salmon nigiri that was next to it. The server asked if I wanted “one small piece” to make up for it, which I accepted. But it got to the table pretty long after we were done with the meal (long enough that we considered saying thanks but no thanks, but we couldn’t get anyone’s attention). It came ice cold and with wasabi (some of which is NOT gluten free and I did have a mild reaction that night); the combination of those attributes meant I couldn’t even taste the fish. So, it was fine? But definitely not great. And I’d rather my health not be put at risk. We’ll probably go back again eventually, but there are so many other sushi options around. Overall, it wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t the best. If you have any dietary restrictions, be vigilant about checking every single thing that comes your way here.
