Khai is a jewel tucked away where the SoMa & Potrero neighborhoods meet. Small, precious & unlike any other Vietnamese dining experience in SF, it offers an upscale prix-fixe tasting menu. Chef Khai opened SF's famous Ana Mandara Restaurant in 2000 & now brings his unique blend of traditional Vietnamese recipes from his native village of Nha Trang & classic French technique & seasonal California ingredients to create a multi-course fine dining experience at Khai. Chef Khai uses color, texture, flavor, & authentic Vietnamese spices to trigger a diner's food memories, inspire an emotional food experience & elevate dining to an art level. His ingredients are hand selected, his recipes are completely original & he uses food to reconnect with one's soul. As the main judge of Iron Chef Vietnam & founder of Chefs without Borders, Chef Khai is a respected contributor to the global food community. Considered a “chef’s chef”, Khai Duong is a pioneer of modern Vietnamese cuisine.

Have been here twice, strongly recommend to anyone who's looking for an Asian fine dining experience, and I think Khai deserves at least one Michelin star. The entire place only has 5 tables, so the overall experience was very intimate and private. Chef Khai even came out and greeted each guest, which is hard to come by at any place and I really appreciate that. Chef Khai is a celebrity chef in Vietnam and was judging for a few food shows. The tasting menu itself was fantastic too, every single course was well thought and they taste great! The quality of food and service is unbeatable at this price.

Amazing meal! Chef Khai was very welcoming and hospitable, and came out to the table to hand deliver at least half of the courses. The rest of the staff was great, too.

Everything was incredible, right down to the ginger/lemongrass tea served with dessert. Each course was delicious and so well presented, but at the same time I really appreciated the warm, casual, easy vibe and lack of presumptuous overkill. The team balanced their presence at the table extremely well, taking opportunities to chat and give information but never interrupting or overdoing it.

Both food and wine were also an excellent value, especially in SF, and it was refreshing to see a great wine list with a ton of bottles at right around $50.

We’ll definitely be back soon.

Interior decoration is old. For the price we paid, it’s not very worthwhile. The waiter didn’t ask if we need our coat to be hung so we had to pile our coats on the seat. Plus some dishes taste plain and others taste too strong.

We celebrated our anniversary at Khai, and had a fantastic evening. We were so surprised that Chef Khai served some of the dishes himself. We enjoyed our conversation with him very much. The multi-course dinner was delicious from beginning to end. We will be back!

We love this place and the experience. Every course is delicious and beautifully presented. This was our second visit and we brought friends this time. They enjoyed it too and loved chatting with Chef about their travels to Vietnam. We plan to return soon.

The service was great. The food was good but way TOO EXPENSIVE- given the number of options in San Francisco just not worth it.

Khai was a lovely and special experience. We had a personal waiter who served us and then explained each dish. Although not a very plush place it was very tranquil and a perfect environment to have a conversation

My husband and I enjoyed his birthday celebration + date night away from kids. The food was very good with room for improvement. Our favorite was the foie gras with mango and pickled veggies - the sweet and sour paired very well with the heavy creamy taste. The rest of the food were delicious too, but the ingredients put together did not heighten the final taste. The sablefish and pineapple/durian dumpling were also of notable mention. Our least favorite was the crab soup. As for presentation, you got me with the mini dim sum steamers! Thank you, Khai, for a very enjoyable evening. Keep up the good work and you’ll go far.

Birthday dinner with my husband, which was noted in the reservation though the restaurant did not take notice (my husband was appreciative). All the dishes were thoughtfully prepared, the meal was excellent overall, and would return when the menu changes to experience something new. A few weeks out, the memorable dishes were the black cod, the lobster, and the lamb.

We came to the early seating after a Saturday matinee of Miss Saigon. An interesting culinary experience, especially for my teenager. The space was serene but not luxurious and the service wasn't quite as smooth as one would hope at this price point (waiters gave detailed explanations of each dish, but their accents were hard to decipher.) The food was good. The fois gras course was tasty and the crab noodle soup and fish of the day were excellent. Ceviche heavy on red onions and lamb with eggplant with a slightly-too-sweet sauce were also good. The lobster had a strange texture and wasn't improved by banana sauce. Wine list very limited, but all three white wines were delicious and well chosen to go with the food. I didn't like the dessert, but that was ok as I probably wouldn't have been tempted by anything but chocolate after all those courses. Lemon grass and ginger tea was the perfect finishing touch.

Chef Khai provided an exquisite menu. Every course was presented with elegance. The taste and texture was delicious and the spices used in each dish left a wonderful lingering taste in your mouth.

His staff was excellent and took care of our needs.

We went there for our anniversary and it was well worth it. I definitely would go back again.

A ten course meal of delicious, authentic, beautifully presented Vietnamese food paired with fabulous wine. Upon serving, each course was thoughtfully described to us by our server. Service was spot on—timely but not intrusive. Chef Khai checked on us/visited with us several times during our meal. His talent was evident in the dishes he created and his passion was evident whenever he spoke to us. This was a dining experience, not just a delicious meal!

A fantastic and unique experience beyond the usual New American or Californian tasting menu. The dishes were tasty, well balanced and nuanced in flavor, incorporating fresh Vietnamese and local ingredients. 10 courses of good portions left us pleasantly full. Service was attentive and friendly, with chef Khai joining diners for conversation.

Looking forward to returning soon!

Outstanding and sophisticated food - inspired by Viet Nam. Service was rough around the edges- hard justify against the cost - $175/person inclusive of tip and bottle of Sake.

Great experience at Khai! Standouts were the soup for the rich complex flavors, the Cha Ca style fish for its melt in the mouth textures and exquisitely balanced tastes, the lobster and corn fritter—the corn fritter was one of the best things I have eaten, and the lamb over eggplant for its savory goodness. Also the eggplant was delightfully crispy on the outside and sweet and creamy on the inside and a really great complement to the lamb.

Visited Khai for the 5:30pm seating. We were seated promptly and the table was in a cozy corner, which was appreciated by my date and I. The waitstaff was highly professional and knowlegable of the wine list pairings, as well as the menu.

The tasting menu was 10 courses, individually prepared and served by Chef Khai. The first course was a white seaweed salad, which opened up the palate to a modern interpretation of a millennium of Vietnamese culinary tradition. The other standout was halibut ceviche.

We really enjoyed the personal attention to each table by Chef Khai. Chef explained each course and would gladly discus the preperation and development of that dish.

I can not recommend Khai enough.
