Kellari Taverna Ratings and Reviews
Grabbed dinner here while in NYC for business. Had grilled lakvari per bartender's suggestion. This fish was flown from Greece, was grilled whole, then the head and tail were removed but present on the plate and the body was butterflied with most of the bones removed. It was delicate, flaky and delicious! It was served with a lemon and olive oil dressing which was delicious - I wanted to put it on everything! I ordered the kale and chickpea side, which was sauteed with garlic and olive oil. Side was enough for 2. For dessert, had the galaktoboureko (vanilla custard in phyllo with honey), again, per the bartender's recommendation. It was not too sweet and reminded me of a ricotta pie. Everything was excellent, and the dinner service at the bar was attentive without being intrusive. I can't wait to visit again!
Worst service I have ever received. No waitress, no water, no bread for over 10 min. 2 Maitre D's standing doing nothing but seating new customers. Busboys walked by our table twice with the dirty dishes sitting piled up. Grilled squid, tough, Shrimp good, feta and tomatoes ok.
First time I have ever left 0 tip. There are so many good greek grill fish restaurants in New York you don't need to come to this one.
I took my mother here as she was visiting NYC for the weekend and wanted Authentic Mediterranean food. Found this restaurant on a whim but was not disappointed at all! Food was fantastic and so was the service. I highly recommend going here for a special occasion or brunch as the food is very fresh, authentic, and the decor is very tasteful. 5/5! Thank you for a wonderful experience.
I've been to Kellari a number of times for lunch or dinner - have never been for brunch. The restaurant is very pretty - especially so with holiday decorations this time of year. The brunch menu included choices from eggs to sandwiches to lamb or fish entrees - something for everyone. Lobster Club was full of fresh lobster meat, and came with salad and fries. Burger was also good. The travelzoo deal was crazy good, but even the regular brunch menu is a good value, with $18 for bottomless mimosas (with fresh OJ) or Bloody Mary. Will definitely add this to my options for brunch outings!
We found this gem on Travelzoo... Got a great deal on brunch for 2 and made the reservation before we even arrived in the city. Not disappointed. Close to Bryant Park and Rockefeller Center but not crowded. The Sea Bass was phenomenal! Gluten free allergy was taken seriously. Give them a try
As always, Kellari was excellent. Great food, attentive service. One of our party is Brazilian and on a restricted diet and our waiter was Portuguese and took time to explain the menu in her native language. Vegan to Paleo, there's something for everyone. My wife's favorite and one of mine.
My wife and I arrived at 6.00pm, as reserved, informed the waiter that we were going to the theatre and had to leave by 7.40pm. The restaurant was overcrowded and service was very slow. It took 40 minutes to get a bottle of wine, food arrived at 7.10pm, by demanding the check for the "meal" we were able to get to the theatre on time. Overall, it was a miserable experience.
The food is good however the service is lacking. Friendly yes but for a restaurant that is very oriented to a pre theatre crowd they need to manage their timing better. The table next to us seated after us got all three dishes before we got our two... and we waited. And waited. An almost two hour allowance before the theatre left us with no time to spare ... two people two apps one main course no liquor no dessert was over 100$ Before tip - it’s insanely expensive not to have every detail covered. But, the room is pretty and the food is good. Service leaves room for improvement ....
We arrived for our assigned reservation time and our table wasn't available. The maitre d' was very accommodating and even provided a complimentary drink. When we were seated (about 1/2 hour later), the waiter was very disheveled. As per the maître d's instructions, we let the waiter know that we would be attending a show and so while not worried about time, did need to be able to eat in about 2 hours time. The waiter did not present any special menu items, forgot to get us bread, forgot our drinks, waited on several tables other than ours. He finally took our order, but again forgot our drinks and bread. He apologized and said something about the order system went down. The food was decent, but probably won't be back due to the failed service.
We had dinner reservations at 6:15 for an 8:00 play. The wait staff was very inattentive. We asked for the wine menu and the waiter returned with the iPad drink list and then ran off. He did not return so we asked a different waiter to take our drink order. Approximately 30 minutes later no drinks so I went to the bar and got our drinks. Eventually, dinner arrived and we had 15 minutes to rush through our meal to walk 2 blocks to the theatre. Very poor service, the waiters were running around like mad while the “managers” walked around in circles.
Really enjoyed Kellari, the food was awesome and the service was very good, and the prices were very good for midtown NY. Used the pre-theater menu and got the small salmon cakes and the Lamb chops and the walnut cake desert. All were great. The seafood at the restaurant looked awesome with the absolute largest shrimp I have ever seen (almost 1 foot long). They quickly found our open table reservation and we made it to our show in plenty of time. A great time!!
Kellari has quickly become one of my favored Greek restaurants in Manhattan. The entrees are always excellent, as are most of the appetizers that I've tried. I seriously considered giving the food five stars, and wish I could have gone 4.5. It is, indeed, excellent (i.e. better than very good) but I have extremely high standards for "Outstanding".
The pre- and post- theater menus have an excellent selection, and would raise the rating on "Value" to Outstanding (but on my last meal, I arrived during prime-time, thus the "Very Good" rating).
In terms of decor, it is perhaps the "Greekest" Greek restaurant in Manhattan. So I always enjoy my visits there very much.
Good food, terrible slow service. 3 of our party of 4 arrived on time but they wouldn’t seat us. When 4th arrived we had to wait at least 10 more minutes. Ordering went smoothly but food took forever to arrive. And we ordered off the fixed price pre-theater menu! By the time our entrees arrived we had our credit cards on the table... had about 3 minutes to inhale and pay and literally run to the theater. The few bites were good but we were so disappointed.
We have dined at Kellari Taverna many times over the years. This last time was a special occasion honoring someone's birthday. The plan was a leisurely dinner and theater afterwards.
We made reservations for 5:45PM and arrived at that time. The restaurant was extremely crowded and very noisy, even at this early hour.
Our entrees did not arrive till 7:35PM and only then because we had to leave the table to
prompt the serving staff. The restaurant was so crowded it was hard to find a path
through the tables. A fire hazard to be sure. There was no leisurely dining this night
at Kellari Taverna.
One of those places where the decor outdid the food! Ice cream scoops of humus, taziki, tiramisu, et al in a sound scape of high speed Greek music felt hardly relaxing more in the midst of a silent movie. Table next to us had their entrees served before appetizers. When the order was rectified and the entrees came out again they were assured that they were freshly made. Not true, l saw them being stashed under hot lights. The menu was fairly limited and the prices high. Off my list of places to recommend.
My wife and I had dinner here with her sister and my brother-in-law.
While expensive (although they do offer a price fixed menu) it is worth the price as long as you don’t let the waiter move you along too quickly.
We saw one party of 4 come in after we did and leave Long before we were done with dinner.
It takes some effort to avoid ordering too soon - and I recommend ordering and finishing appitizers before ordering an entree.
The crab cocktail is grossly overpriced - but I love crab and so indulged. The crab was delicious - but again overpriced so not good value for the money.
My wife had a sea bass filet from the price fixed menu which she said was very good. I had a whole sea bass which was excellent.
The other couple had lamb chops and sea scallops - both of which they praised.
By actively taking our time (dinner and drinks spaced over 2.5 Hours) we had a great time! If we had ordered when the waiter tried to take orders we would have been done and gone in 45 minutes.
This place gets very crowded between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM since it is very conveniently located near the broadway theater scene.
This used to be my favorite restaurant in nyc . Now it’s overpriced, mediocre food and terrible service . 3 hours for dinner ? Ridiculous . Our server forgot items and had to be reminded twice. He agreed to separate checks and then forgot that too.
26.95 for a grilled octopus appetizer that used to be 17.00 two years ago . And it used to be delicious !
Now it was tough and not sushi grade quality .
My spanikopita also bad . Why put kale in it ?
So disappointing ... never will return . Way better Greek restaurants in the area for half the price
What had happened to this lovely restaurant ? From the surly hostess without a smile who said she knew nothing about the restaurant’s wine club to the lone waiter whose admittedly courteous attention it took several minutes to attract to the cold plates with room temperature food , this is not the place Miss Moore knew and loved.
