Kellari Taverna Ratings and Reviews
Kellari has quickly become one of my favored Greek restaurants in Manhattan. The entrees are always excellent, as are most of the appetizers that I've tried. I seriously considered giving the food five stars, and wish I could have gone 4.5. It is, indeed, excellent (i.e. better than very good) but I have extremely high standards for "Outstanding".
The pre- and post- theater menus have an excellent selection, and would raise the rating on "Value" to Outstanding (but on my last meal, I arrived during prime-time, thus the "Very Good" rating).
In terms of decor, it is perhaps the "Greekest" Greek restaurant in Manhattan. So I always enjoy my visits there very much.
Good food, terrible slow service. 3 of our party of 4 arrived on time but they wouldn’t seat us. When 4th arrived we had to wait at least 10 more minutes. Ordering went smoothly but food took forever to arrive. And we ordered off the fixed price pre-theater menu! By the time our entrees arrived we had our credit cards on the table... had about 3 minutes to inhale and pay and literally run to the theater. The few bites were good but we were so disappointed.
One of those places where the decor outdid the food! Ice cream scoops of humus, taziki, tiramisu, et al in a sound scape of high speed Greek music felt hardly relaxing more in the midst of a silent movie. Table next to us had their entrees served before appetizers. When the order was rectified and the entrees came out again they were assured that they were freshly made. Not true, l saw them being stashed under hot lights. The menu was fairly limited and the prices high. Off my list of places to recommend.
My wife and I had dinner here with her sister and my brother-in-law.
While expensive (although they do offer a price fixed menu) it is worth the price as long as you don’t let the waiter move you along too quickly.
We saw one party of 4 come in after we did and leave Long before we were done with dinner.
It takes some effort to avoid ordering too soon - and I recommend ordering and finishing appitizers before ordering an entree.
The crab cocktail is grossly overpriced - but I love crab and so indulged. The crab was delicious - but again overpriced so not good value for the money.
My wife had a sea bass filet from the price fixed menu which she said was very good. I had a whole sea bass which was excellent.
The other couple had lamb chops and sea scallops - both of which they praised.
By actively taking our time (dinner and drinks spaced over 2.5 Hours) we had a great time! If we had ordered when the waiter tried to take orders we would have been done and gone in 45 minutes.
This place gets very crowded between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM since it is very conveniently located near the broadway theater scene.
This used to be my favorite restaurant in nyc . Now it’s overpriced, mediocre food and terrible service . 3 hours for dinner ? Ridiculous . Our server forgot items and had to be reminded twice. He agreed to separate checks and then forgot that too.
26.95 for a grilled octopus appetizer that used to be 17.00 two years ago . And it used to be delicious !
Now it was tough and not sushi grade quality .
My spanikopita also bad . Why put kale in it ?
So disappointing ... never will return . Way better Greek restaurants in the area for half the price
What had happened to this lovely restaurant ? From the surly hostess without a smile who said she knew nothing about the restaurant’s wine club to the lone waiter whose admittedly courteous attention it took several minutes to attract to the cold plates with room temperature food , this is not the place Miss Moore knew and loved.
We waited and waited for food, even with prompting. They offered us free desserts, but by the we just wanted to leave. Appetizers were great, main courses nothing special. No lamb riblets on the menu. We have gone there every year for a family meal, but this time was quite Disappointing.
This was the second time I have dined at Kellari's and the first time for my Son and his wife. Both are major foodies. They loved the food, the service and the ambiance. The roasted tomato soup with feta was rich, thick and flavorful. The fried calamari were tasty, lightly breaded and tender. My lamb was succulent, but the potatoes were even better. They added a herb that made the roasted potatoes just spectacular. All the food was well prepared and fresh.
The service was extremely attentive but not intrusive. We were there for almost 3 hours, but we were never rushed and had a delightful meal.
The waiter completely ignored the fact that we had to see a play at 7:30. He was told when we ordered about our timing and he said we would be out by 7:15. The food did not reach our table until 7. I spoke to the manager who apologized but frankly did not care if my group ever came back. I have eaten here many times and will never come back.
We went here for a 1:00 lunch reservatiion. We were seated right away. I wasn't that impressed with the menu - there weren't many choices. They gave us a brunch menu and when I told the waitress we didn't want brunch she said that was the only menu, however, online there is a lunch menu with many more choices, that's why we chose this establishment. We were a bit in a rush so we ordered from it. We had a Greek salad which consisted of tomatoes, feta and cucumbers - the tomatoes were very fresh and ripe. For our entrees I had the lamb chops which were adequate, there were 3 very small chops - there was no type of condiment or juice so I found them to be very dry. I asked for mint jelly typically served with lamb, but they didn't have it. My friend had the Lavraki which was grilled Mediterranean sea bass with spinach & rice - she asked if she could substitute the rice for a potato, the waitress said no and then when her entrée came it didn't even have the rice. We wanted to order a bottle of wine and the waitress handed us an ipad with the wine list. I can't stand that. I like to see my options with prices so I can easily scan what price range, type of wine, etc. I found it to be cumbersome scrolling on an ipad. We asked for a printed menu and she said there was none. We didn't have dessert, got the check and left. We went to see a show and found that we were still pretty hungry. Snacked on some candy bars and afterwards we went to a nice pub for a great steak dinner. Wish we would've made that our first stop. Although not terrible, I wouldn't go back here.
We enjoyed our dinner at this restaurant, but I got the feeling you needed to be a regular to get a decent seat. The food was fine, but the service was consistent with other reviews. I visit NYC 8 times a year for business and try to explore different restaurants and this night I was craving middle eastern food and found Kellari. You should try it and ask for a table away from the front door.
We've been to Kelleri Tavern many times and always on for our last 5 wedding anniversary. This was our 35th and we were welcomed with champagne which was very nice. Their specialty being seafood is excellent and the variety is also excellent. The wait staff is amazing. The one issue I have with the menu is the accompaniments with the main course. There should be some creativity here and quantity. Although the hostess this time was a bit aggressive and we felt un-welcomed. After we sat at our table all was as usual, a very great dining experience. I think we need to move on.
The quintessential Mediterranean restaurant with excellent food and service. The Greek salad is wonderful with large chunks of delectable tomatoes, cucumbers, and great tasting Feta cheese. Any of the whole fish dishes are marvelous as the fist is fresh and perfectly prepared.
Second time for me, my guest had been several times, and we had great food.
Our problem was being seated in the immediate front section opposite the bar area .
Some very Noisy/Loud men who forget there are others trying to hear each other.
Oh, and they had sold out the special of the day!
Otherwise we really enjoyed.
