The food is not prepared well. The entire roll would fall apart everytime the chopstick would try to pick one bite up. The server brings you water - to pour yourself - and another person drops off the off. What did I tip her for? We did equal amounts of work. Food is overpriced for what it is. Will not be returning.
Well executed food. We ordered the Miso Wings to share, katsu chicken and a couple of sushi rolls. Service was fast and friendly. The only downside was the noise level. It's a bit hard to hear people across the table. Our waiter never offered a dessert menu, he just brought the check. We had dessert across the street at Graeter's instead.
We were excited to try KaZe with Groupon as it’s a nice location close to Music Hall. We were disappointed with the sashimi, sushi rolls and the miso soup. Not sure if the sushi chef quite “graduated” as the sushi rice was not fully cooked (with hard center), the rolls were very loose and fell apart with slight grab of the chopsticks, and the sashimi were sliced without much consideration for the grain of the fish and apparent knife skills. KaZe was kind to remove the sushi from our bill and offered apologies. Both the miso soup and the pho broth were too heavy on soy sauce and very salty. We enjoyed the atmosphere, service was great but the food quality needs to improve to command the price.
This is not actually a bad restaurant, but it disappointed us. The decor is nice, and maybe we just hit an off night. But you know you are in trouble in a Japanese restaurant when nary an oriental face, either among the wait and kitchen staff or among the sparse clientele, is to be seen. Service was so so, food was so so, and the prices were higher than could be justified by either service or food.
We arrived for a quick meal. The service was fast. But the food was terrible. We ordered two entrees and three sides. Not a single dish was worth eating. It was either over or under seasoned and over cooked. The sever did not even ask how our food was. We were in a hurry so we paid and left
KaZe has excellent food and a great ambiance. You really have three spaces: the main restaurant which includes sushi bar seating as well as booths and tables, then there is a separate bar room which has more of a tavern feel, and the outdoor patio when weather permits. They each have their own style. Love to sample small plates from the different sections of the menu!
We were excited to try Kaze for our first time. Unfortunately, the food was mediocre, not we had expected. Portions were extremely small. The menu is fairly limited. I would say overpriced based on what we were served. Our waiter was very pleasant, but not at all in tune when it came to cocktails, socializing, the menu etc... We most likely will not return.
We enjoyed the the sashimi it was fresh, although the cuts were not created with any real precision. The scallop ceviche was my favorite the flavors were sublime. The seaweed-veggie stir fry was healthy and hearty. The salmon roll was good but didn't deserve top billing given the portions related to other more dominant ingredients in the roll. The sake and wine list were ample. Our table/booth was ready upon our arrival, the hostesses were welcoming and professional. The service was good and we didn't feel rushed particularly for a Friday. We will return and recommend based on our experience.
A friend and I met at Kaze before the ballet and it was delightful. Great atmosphere and unique Asian cuisine that was fresh, light and interesting. Great value too as nothing was too expensive. We shared a few small plates and ordered just one entree for both of us. Great textures and tastes and we left satisfied and not at all hungry. A great spot and likely a little easier to get into before theatre as compared to more popular neighbors.
I was a little disappointed by the size of the scallop ceviche. For a $12 appetizer I would have expected more than like an ounce of scallop. Also there wasn't much of a variety in terms of their sushi rolls. The food was ok but I'd rather go somewhere where I can get more for the money.
Worst Japanese restaurant I have ever been to. The food was of poor quality and poorly prepared. The menu is tiny and I could not even find anything that sounded appetizing on it. The chefs looked like high school kids and none of them were Asian, let alone Japanese. Considering the above, the food is overpriced and the service was poor. After waiting ten minutes for my waitress to pick up my payment, I walked up to the hostess and said I have a play to make and can't wait any longer. I would not go back to this place even if it were free.
Had the short rib dumplings, lettuce wraps and ramen. All were fantastic. They also have Asashi beer available here which is one of my favorites, so that was a nice surprise to have. Only thing to note is that there were only four dumplings, so anymore than two people might not be worth them. Still extremely good though.
I've been to Kaze multiple times prior to this visit and had a lovely time each time; however, this particular time was unfortunately unpleasant. I suspect they weren't prepared for the crowd brought in from the art event in OTR. We were seated and I then got a call from the same person who confirmed us as arrived asking if we were going to come to the restaurant. I had to go to the front of the restaurant to let her know that she already sat us and we didn't need a reminder call, we were already there, she sat us. Our food came out in various stages -- appetizers arrived after the meal, sushi rolls were delayed from the entree. Our server was helpful and congenial but obviously frazzled - I asked for a drink menu and he forgot a couple of times. It was a little nuts. That, and the food was not as delicious as it's been in the past -- just seemed very hurridly put together and an afterthought. They were more focused on clearing people out than the food and our experience. It'll be a while before I return and won't likely recommend it to other diners.
We were certainly looking forward to our dinner at Kaze. Unfortunately, we found the service lacking and mediocre food. The short rib dumplings were ok, but I expected better for the price. The pork belly dumpling was excellent. We should have ordered 10 of them. The sushi all looked the same, but we ordered two different rolls, but it certainly looked like only one type of roll. We have made better sushi at home! The server did not have any suggestions for first timers and was forgetful and slow. When it came time for the Living Social certificate, the server wanted me to give her my phone! No way!. The manager had to come by the table and scan the code but then said next time we should print it out if I did not want to give the server my phone. Poor customer service in my opinion.
I’ve heard such good things about Kaze over the years, I decided to give them a try. I’m really sorry I did. My wife and I are not very familiar with Japanese dining and we would have enjoyed help with the menu, it was pretty busy and the waiter seemed rushed; the starter came out with the meal and the food was not enjoyable. Too many things wrong for such a highly acclaimed restaurant.
I enjoy Kaze but every time we go there we find that the staff are severely under trained. They ran out of forks during our visit. They only brought two of the four of us water and then forgot to go get more. We sat for about 10 minutes before getting our drink order taken. The staff kept complaining and apologizing that they were so busy even though at least a quarter of the tables were empty.On our most recent trip we also found that our waitress could care less that a member of our party had a severe allergy and when we asked her about ingredients for preparation she responded with answers like “I think but I’m not sure which” are not helpful at all to someone with a life-threatening allergy. They have been very good sushi and I am generally impressed with their beer selection and cocktails but I do wish that they would reconsider their small plates which are all very awkward and too small to share between a group of four.
The food was very good. We sampled a little bit of everything... lettuce wraps, sashimi and sushi rolls, lemongrass pho. The service, however, was not nearly as good. Table visits from our server were very sporadic. Time to get a drink was forever, and we never got a refill on water. The server never even checked to make sure our food was OK nor did she clear any of our dirty dishes from our appetizers or after our meals were finished. Unfortunately this made the experience not worth it, which means we are unlikely to return.
