KaZe Ratings and Reviews
This is not actually a bad restaurant, but it disappointed us. The decor is nice, and maybe we just hit an off night. But you know you are in trouble in a Japanese restaurant when nary an oriental face, either among the wait and kitchen staff or among the sparse clientele, is to be seen. Service was so so, food was so so, and the prices were higher than could be justified by either service or food.
We arrived for a quick meal. The service was fast. But the food was terrible. We ordered two entrees and three sides. Not a single dish was worth eating. It was either over or under seasoned and over cooked. The sever did not even ask how our food was. We were in a hurry so we paid and left
KaZe has excellent food and a great ambiance. You really have three spaces: the main restaurant which includes sushi bar seating as well as booths and tables, then there is a separate bar room which has more of a tavern feel, and the outdoor patio when weather permits. They each have their own style. Love to sample small plates from the different sections of the menu!
We were excited to try Kaze for our first time. Unfortunately, the food was mediocre, not we had expected. Portions were extremely small. The menu is fairly limited. I would say overpriced based on what we were served. Our waiter was very pleasant, but not at all in tune when it came to cocktails, socializing, the menu etc... We most likely will not return.
We enjoyed the the sashimi it was fresh, although the cuts were not created with any real precision. The scallop ceviche was my favorite the flavors were sublime. The seaweed-veggie stir fry was healthy and hearty. The salmon roll was good but didn't deserve top billing given the portions related to other more dominant ingredients in the roll. The sake and wine list were ample. Our table/booth was ready upon our arrival, the hostesses were welcoming and professional. The service was good and we didn't feel rushed particularly for a Friday. We will return and recommend based on our experience.
A friend and I met at Kaze before the ballet and it was delightful. Great atmosphere and unique Asian cuisine that was fresh, light and interesting. Great value too as nothing was too expensive. We shared a few small plates and ordered just one entree for both of us. Great textures and tastes and we left satisfied and not at all hungry. A great spot and likely a little easier to get into before theatre as compared to more popular neighbors.
I was a little disappointed by the size of the scallop ceviche. For a $12 appetizer I would have expected more than like an ounce of scallop. Also there wasn't much of a variety in terms of their sushi rolls. The food was ok but I'd rather go somewhere where I can get more for the money.
Worst Japanese restaurant I have ever been to. The food was of poor quality and poorly prepared. The menu is tiny and I could not even find anything that sounded appetizing on it. The chefs looked like high school kids and none of them were Asian, let alone Japanese. Considering the above, the food is overpriced and the service was poor. After waiting ten minutes for my waitress to pick up my payment, I walked up to the hostess and said I have a play to make and can't wait any longer. I would not go back to this place even if it were free.
Had the short rib dumplings, lettuce wraps and ramen. All were fantastic. They also have Asashi beer available here which is one of my favorites, so that was a nice surprise to have. Only thing to note is that there were only four dumplings, so anymore than two people might not be worth them. Still extremely good though.
I've been to Kaze multiple times prior to this visit and had a lovely time each time; however, this particular time was unfortunately unpleasant. I suspect they weren't prepared for the crowd brought in from the art event in OTR. We were seated and I then got a call from the same person who confirmed us as arrived asking if we were going to come to the restaurant. I had to go to the front of the restaurant to let her know that she already sat us and we didn't need a reminder call, we were already there, she sat us. Our food came out in various stages -- appetizers arrived after the meal, sushi rolls were delayed from the entree. Our server was helpful and congenial but obviously frazzled - I asked for a drink menu and he forgot a couple of times. It was a little nuts. That, and the food was not as delicious as it's been in the past -- just seemed very hurridly put together and an afterthought. They were more focused on clearing people out than the food and our experience. It'll be a while before I return and won't likely recommend it to other diners.
We were certainly looking forward to our dinner at Kaze. Unfortunately, we found the service lacking and mediocre food. The short rib dumplings were ok, but I expected better for the price. The pork belly dumpling was excellent. We should have ordered 10 of them. The sushi all looked the same, but we ordered two different rolls, but it certainly looked like only one type of roll. We have made better sushi at home! The server did not have any suggestions for first timers and was forgetful and slow. When it came time for the Living Social certificate, the server wanted me to give her my phone! No way!. The manager had to come by the table and scan the code but then said next time we should print it out if I did not want to give the server my phone. Poor customer service in my opinion.
I’ve heard such good things about Kaze over the years, I decided to give them a try. I’m really sorry I did. My wife and I are not very familiar with Japanese dining and we would have enjoyed help with the menu, it was pretty busy and the waiter seemed rushed; the starter came out with the meal and the food was not enjoyable. Too many things wrong for such a highly acclaimed restaurant.
I enjoy Kaze but every time we go there we find that the staff are severely under trained. They ran out of forks during our visit. They only brought two of the four of us water and then forgot to go get more. We sat for about 10 minutes before getting our drink order taken. The staff kept complaining and apologizing that they were so busy even though at least a quarter of the tables were empty. On our most recent trip we also found that our waitress could care less that a member of our party had a severe allergy and when we asked her about ingredients for preparation she responded with answers like “I think but I’m not sure which” are not helpful at all to someone with a life-threatening allergy. They have been very good sushi and I am generally impressed with their beer selection and cocktails but I do wish that they would reconsider their small plates which are all very awkward and too small to share between a group of four.
The food was very good. We sampled a little bit of everything... lettuce wraps, sashimi and sushi rolls, lemongrass pho. The service, however, was not nearly as good. Table visits from our server were very sporadic. Time to get a drink was forever, and we never got a refill on water. The server never even checked to make sure our food was OK nor did she clear any of our dirty dishes from our appetizers or after our meals were finished. Unfortunately this made the experience not worth it, which means we are unlikely to return.
We saw a lot of mixed reviews but gave it a go anyway. The food was very good and the place is beautiful! The waiter was not very attentive but we still had plenty of time to get to the show. It was a very nice place to chat with friends and take it easy. Don't be in a hurry. The wines are impressive!
We went to Kaze before a Cincinnati Pops Show and ordered the Veggie Bun small bite, A 5 piece order of the spicy tuna sushi rolls, and a 5 piece order of the Kato sushi rolls. The Veggie Bun and Kato sushi rolls were amazing, and since we were still hungry, we ordered another order of the 5 piece Kato sushi rolls. Unfortunately, this order took almost an hour to get to us, and we were getting worried we were going to have to leave without receiving them in order to make our show. However, they came out just in time, and since they took so long to get to us, they didn't charge us for them. Kaze's food is so good, and because they took the second order off for us, I think their service is exceptional too. Highly recommend for either a fun girls night out, or a date night.
My wife and I really enjoy sushi so I decided to setup a reservation and surprise her with a restaurant that we haven’t eaten at before. The atmosphere is more of of a hipster crowd where everyone looks and dresses the same which is okay if you’re a hipster but seeing so many together was a bit comical.
The we ordered several small dishes to get a sense of the menu and enjoy a variety-of the food....it was good...not great but I think that the ambience of the restaurant itself took away from the taste of the food.
Our waitress was ok...not overbearing but yet not very helpful either. We were new there and we asked her for several recommendations but she kept being neutral and vague.
Again, our experience was just ok and we most likely won’t go back. Not a bad experience but nothing to draw us back if that makes sense.
Made reservation far in advance, was a birthday dinner, 3 couples, requested a table away from the kitchen/hallway to bathroom. And sadly that is where they put us.
Server was dull and uninformative, 3 orders came out wrong, in fact, they brought sliders on a plate with no bun, and then showed up 10 minutes later with plain toasted buns, after the guests had already eaten their burgers. Lots dropping plates and confusing from the servers that we could see from the plate station. Sushi rolls were okay have had better in Cincy. Will never go back. As well, were told upon confirmation of reservation, they would offer a special dessert for bday person, that never happened.
We have eaten at Kaze a half dozen times and always loved it. We usually get the small plates. This time we tried the salmon special and it was the worst meal we've had there. We were a little embarrassed because we had recommended this restaurant to the friends who joined us. Everyone had the same meal. My salmon was medium rare and very tender, but fatty and quite peppery. My husband's was medium and he couldn't taste the pepper. There was very little else on the plate. The ramen noodles were soggy, not crispy. I had maybe one mushroom and a few pieces of bok choy. It was so disappointing for the price. We haven't given up in Kaze, but we will never order the special again.
The description in Open Table about the search for the best sushi in the mid west could hardly be more misleading. The sushi choice is very limited. All the nigiri we tried were very tired. The rice is not well cooked, and disintegrates as you dip your disappointing tuna or salmon into the bowls.
The bathroom area is shabby, and little disconcerting for my wife to have to descend in a service elevator to the depths.
Our server was I think new but very pleasant and went off to answer all our queries. But in our search for great sushi on a special weekend this place was a sore disappointment.
Great service, real attentive to details! Was provided great recommendations from. Chase, who was super knowledgeable and enthusiastic. It was fun watching cooks do their thing! Great place for a date night or fun with friends. Not to mention EVERY thing we tried was amazingly delicious! Appetizer, sushi, chicken and dumpling dessert!
I went for Restaurant Week with my husband (and infant in a stroller) after wanting to go for a long time and loved it! Food was delicious, happy hour was an awesome deal, fantastic outdoor patio atmosphere... we had a preconceived idea that this place was all raw stuff or something, but it's definitely not just a sushi spot. Loved it and will return - especially for happy hour!
The food was great -- it is creative and tasty -- if a little pricey for what you get. We sat in the bar -- al fresco, so maybe that's why the service was less great. Interrupting conversations to check on us while we ate, but forgetting us when we needed service.
