Kaz Sushi Bistro Ratings and Reviews
Had friends visiting from California who wanted sushi. Kaz came through with flying colors. The sashimi, nigiri and rolls were all wonderful. Kaz offers both traditional nigiri and rolls along with some more updated and eclectic options that are delicious. The Mexican roll is a definite winner for vegetarians and for anyone who wants a light, refreshing snack. My favorites - unagi and hamachi were absolutely delicious. Will definitely return.
We did an omakase and were not disappointed. Food = fantastic. Service = fantastic. Did I say the food was fantastic? I've never had better sushi, and because we let Chef decide what we'd have, we tried some things we never would have otherwise (and we're not sushi novices). I cannot wait to go back.
Two college friends and met for a "have fun living in Costa Rica for a year" dinner for one of us. The seaweed salad was large enough that it and the scallops small bites were enough for me. The seaweed salad alone was perfect but with the sauces, it was even better. I'd like to use the sauce to dunk everything in! And the scallops were so light and flavorful with a deliciously slightly lemony taste. Perfect for the sweltering DC evening.
Haris, our waiter, was AWESOME! When you can get our two teenagers to smile and laugh, you are an amazing human. Haris was funny, informed, and personable. He made great recommendations and was very accommodating to each of our different palates. Sushi, although fairly standard, was fresh and delicious.
One of those sushi restaurants where you walk in and you know it's a serious establishment. Best yellowtail roll I think I've ever had, all of the nigiri was fresh, interesting, and deliberately crafted. Only con was how the waiter brought his sake recommendation which he didn't tell us was a $60 bottle... but he was great in all other aspects.
Though some praise Kaz's "authenticity," it didn't seem particularly so to me (I lived in Japan more than ten years). The miso shiru was lukewarm, lacked a lid, and was served first, American style. Portions were gargantuan--one bento was enough to feed two people. The chicken teriyaki was mediocre; I should have known better than to order it. We were happy to see unagi and okonomiyaki on the menu; the former was good, the latter exceptionally good, though it's too small to make a meal. We didn't taste the sushi. A friend recommended the chef's tasting menu (omakase), but it was beyond our price range. Overall, a disappointment.
I made a res for 3 people @ 8pm to sit with Kaz at the Sushi Bar. Our friend arrived before we did so they sat him at a table next to the Sushi Bar because it wasn't available yet & Kaz greeted him. He explained he wasn't working the Sushi Bar that night but spoke with our friend for a little while & Kaz recommended a great Saki which was ordered. We arrived & were seated at the table with our friend while waiting for the Sushi bar & Kaz came over to say hello & asked how we were enjoying the Saki which was outstandingly smooth & thanked him for the recommendation. We were then seated at the Sushi Bar & gave our entire Sushi order while we enjoyed the Saki & great conversation. The Calamari & Seaweed salads were fabulous & the fish was amazing & tasted so fresh. We had room for dessert so definitely order the Molten Chocolate cake & the Fried Bananas with Raspberry Ice Cream. Unbelievably rich & mouth watering. Can't wait to go back. Wonderful service.
Very nice restaurant. Great service and very fresh sushi although pieces were a little on the smaller side. Having said that I'll still take quality over quantity any time. Nice authentic casual atmosphere with a full dining room that created an energetic atmosphere. Would definitely return next time in DC.
Had the sushi omakase this week (chef's choice endless sushi at the counter) and was blown away by the best and most interesting sushi I've ever had, anywhere, period. Fresh, perfectly prepared, innovatively presented, immaculate sushi--from normal like hamachi to extraordinary like Japanese scallop, wagyu beef, uni, torched salmon belly. Toro, salmon roe, walu, wow, wow, wow.
We made a res 45 minutes before arriving. Waited 5 minutes for the Sushi bar & sat in front of Kaz without knowing it until we had finished eating. Then had a nice co ver station with him before leaving the restaurant. The fish was really fresh & the special Sushi dishes were wonderful. Will be back to eat soon.
Cramped seating. Our server seemed overwhelmed, so whenever we wanted to order more it seemed like we were bothering her. Thankfully the good was good. If I went back it would be on a slow night; which shouldn't be the determining factor when going to a restaurant, just saying.
400.00 for two people when all set and done We had the chef special. Highly e commended. Every dish was pleasant to eat and look at. Service- our waitress was Super attentive. Ambiance- the sushi bar and wall could use some cleaning. Dust build up and water spots on wall.
