We heard great things but we’re disappointed with the food. It was decent but nothing we’d ever go back for.
My low rating has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with our service, which as always, was exceptional with the entire staff being welcoming, knowledgeable and attentive.
Our disappointment began with the 6 oysters for $18 which were so tiny that they were honestly no bigger than my husband’s thumbnail, if that. They could barely be tasted as they were so small. Note please that I am not one of those people who enjoys large raw oysters either, and I have ordered oysters in many restaurants and only occasionally had one this size in a half dozen, these were all not much more than microscopic.
Our guests ordered the filet mignon and were happy, my husband however ordered the ribeye and while it was cooked to his medium rare request, he found for the price that it was unremarkable. This was not our first time at The Katharine and had this been, we would not have returned as he is a true steak lover and very choosy about where he goes for “steak night!”
I had the trout which was nice, but again, not particularly “special,” which we have come to expect from Katharine Brasserie. In fact this night, Brasserie, described the restaurant best, the food was “pub” fare but unfortunately the prices where not pub prices so the imbalance was disappointing. I will pay dearly for the opportunity to dine well and knew the menu and pricing before we went so please don’t confuse my review with those who want huge, overflowing plates for low, low prices. I love ambiance, lovely service and a meal I can remember. On this visit, I did get 2 out of 3.
Next time it may need to be just drinks in their beautiful bar with dinner plans to follow elsewhere.
We had a great time at The Katherine! Went to celebrate my husbands birthday!
Dinner took over an hour to come to the table, they didn’t even realize it until I put my mask on got up from the table and told the manager. We had to ask for water and they never asked if we wanted more wine. Our steaks arrived luke warm and fries were cold. Salmon was delicious but also not hot. Wont recommend. It’s a shame at it had potential to be a great spot in a cool hotel.
Good brasserie fair. Enjoyed French onion soup. Beef tartar was really nice. Frisée salad was good but it said with lardons , there were no lardons but the egg was delicious so they get a pass. Thanks for a good meal.
The service here is always great - very friendly and accommodating. Food is pretty consistently good and the ambience is nice, quite, good lighting, pretty bar area. It's our go-to Sunday or Monday night restaurant when visiting Winston-Salem because most other restaurants are closed those evenings.
Sarah was an outstanding server. Every bite was delicious. Not too crowded. Drinks well made. Had a wonderful evening
My husband and I were staying the night at the Kimpton Cardinal Hotel and made dinner reservations for The Katharine. It’s was the best meal out we have had in quite some time. The French onion soup is a must have and the chicken dish my husband got was amazing! Do not hesitate !! Go and eat there. You will love it !!
Pretty good place to eat a nice meal with friends. Food was solid for standard French dishes, although the chef does has a free hand with the salt. Service was excellent. They do a good job of pacing dishes, refilling wine. Dessert was good too, perfect creme brulet; I think I ate the best frites I’ve ever had.
Meal was outstanding. Outdoor dining was comfortable. Service was a little slower than we would hope for, but overall a great experience. Would recommend.
lovely night out for my wife birthday. Will be back again for a nice night
Meal was delicious. Service top notch. Atmosphere lively and comfortable. Had a great evening.
Food was unbelievably good but you pay for it.............
We were meeting for a fundraising event and it was the perfect stop. Our server was very respectful as we discussed our plans while meeting our needs. Drinks and dishes were great. It was a beautiful evening, thou we sat just inside the patio it was nice hearing the musician in the background.
Excellent food. Excellent service. Very respectable menu that’s well executed.
Excellent meal and ambiance. Will go again for sure.
The food is outstanding, extremely flavorful and creative. I had the chicken au poivre and my husband had the steak frites. Both were spectacular. The wine selection is good and the cocktails are delicious too. I miss French cooking....we don't have much in NC... and this was a treat.
Exquisite food and service not to mention the ambiance. The Brussel Sprouts are a must.
Super Small braserrie type menu but executed perfectly
A reliable place to go for a night out. Beautiful atmosphere inside and out. Always a pleasure!
I like this place. Maybe it was the B service team but it was really poor. Took 10 minutes to get the valet guy to acknowledge we were there (we were the only car), another 5 minutes to have someone seat us and another 10 minutes to have someone come to our table. Food was good. Limited menu but quality. Then it took 20 minutes waiting for the valet guy to get off his smoke break to get our car. Lesson learned, I will self park. Maybe it was just a bad night.
Excellent Steak Frites & Roasted Salmon. Cooked perfectly. Truffle fries and Brussel Sprouts made great starters. Delicious meal . Thank you
Beautiful atmosphere and friendly staff. Delicious food, and I highly recommend the Skinny Spice Margarita!
Amazing service on par with the amazing food. The art deco building providing the ambience was phenomenal.
Really enjoyed our evening out. Great waitress and food/drinks were delicious.
The servers were great and the food was delicious!
We had eaten at the Katherine before for a family birthday celebration and had a wonderful experience. So, when great friends came in town we immediately made reservations at the Katherine. Our experience this time was the exact opposite of the previous evening. From beginning to end it was underwhelming. Our server was inexperienced, the service slow and the food average. Our sides were forgotten entirely. It was embarrassing since we had raved about our previous dinner there.
We had heard mixed reviews from others but since our experience had been so good we assumed the kinks had been worked out. Obviously not.
Really tasty!! Very elevated finger food fun with the tartare, shrimp cocktail, truffled frittes and Brussels sprouts.
We are looking forward to returning to the Raw Bar. Great food. Katherine's menu is appropriately limited. Our dishes were well prepared. Our waitperson was respectful, watchful, and invisible.
Great service and delicious food , attentive to keeping customers appropriately spaced apart, staff all wearing masks , hand sanitizer available everywhere , and outdoor seating available . Overall great dining experience despite Covid.
Lovely food. Good drinks. A nice end to a day of travel.
Food was great, service was great. I’d recommend the ribeye steak & flat bread app to anyone. If you’re as luck as we were they’ll also have the grilled oysters special the day you decide to eat there.
I want to love this place SO bad! The space is beautiful, and it’s such a great repurposing of a beautiful building. BUT... we ordered three steak frittes, two medium-rare and one medium, and they were ALL medium well. Also, I ordered an oyster appetizer which was not turned in to the kitchen. I had to remind the server I’d ordered it so it came with my entree. I feel like this place is very good, but in order to survive, especially in these challenging times. It needs to be exceptional. They need a leadership team that can take them to o the next level.
The food was incredible and the service was delightful. The beauty of this building is icing on the cake! We had a wonderful experience.
Food was fantastic. Great outdoor area
We celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary with dinner at The Katherine. Everyone at the restaurant was extraordinarily nice and made every effort to ensure we had a wonderful experience. The manager, Erin, welcomed us and checked to be sure everything was to our liking. Our server was attentive, but did not hover. She was so friendly and pleasant. I wish I could remember her name! The food was excellent. My wife had the salmon and I had the New York Strip, with the roquefort au poivre sauce/butter and fingerling potatoes. Both of us could not remember having enjoyed a better meal. And then our server offered us a complimentary dessert since it was our anniversary! We chose the s'mores pot au creme, which was a brand new dessert, and we were the first ones to try it. It was amazing - chocolate mousse/pot au creme with sugary granola topped with marshmallow that had just a slight, smoky tinge to it. Our server told us that the executive chef had recently left and that the sous chef had taken over. I'm glad we came when the sous chef was in charge of the kitchen because everything was perfect! I cannot say enough about this dinner - the food was great, the service was wonderful, the ambience was pleasant, cheerful, and fun, and everyone in the restaurant seemed to enjoy ensuring that our experience was top-notch. I do not write many reviews, but The Katherine and its staff deserve more than 5 stars and every accolade possible. Thank you so much!
Very nice establishment. It was easy to obtain a reservation. Our wait staff was very nice and the food was good. It was a little hard to find using GPS and you’ll need to use the valet parking (it’s free). The food was very good but the brussel sprouts were undercooked and we had to remind them to bring one of the dishes we ordered. There were few people there when we were so it was relatively quiet but I can imagine that it could get loud easily in there. I would go again, but probably not my first choice.
Our experience at Katharine Brasserie she was extremely knowledgable and every recommendation was delicious. From our drinks, to our main course, there wasn't a minute that went by that we did not enjoy. It was a beautiful setting and a fantastic atmosphere. Definitely will go back again. Thank you so much for giving us a wonderful evening.
Our waitress was very great. helpful and knowledgeable about the menu items.
My trout was really good, wine selection was decent, and our dinner guests enjoyed their meals as well.
