Katharine Brasserie & Bar
We had a reservation for six for Easter brunch buffet at 11:00. The scrambled eggs and potatoes were stone cold, the tomato bisque barely above room temperature, the lamb and pork were very dry. The baked salmon and lox were good.
The service was on par with the food. We had to wait to have plates cleared and water replenished. The server took one of our guests silverware when she was returning from the buffet with a made to order omelet and we watched it get as cold as the rest of the food as she waited for replacement silverware. It did not seem that crowded for such substandard service.
As for the buffet itself, one of our guests had to wait about 5 minutes at the omelet station before anyone was there to prepare the omelet. It appears there was only one person working the buffet, and he was responsible for making omelets, carving meat and refilling the chafing dishes in the buffet line.
This was a special occasion and, for $45 per person, we certainly expected more in terms of food temperature and service. We dined at the Katherine one time before for a birthday and had a much better experience. If we return again, it certainly will not be for a holiday or buffet. To say we were profoundly disappointed is an understatement.
The service was very good at the restaurant and they had a nice wine list. My wife had the chicken which was very good but the steak dish (which I had) was not. It was ordered to be medium rare but was delivered on the rare side (acceptable). The steak was not enjoyable to eat, as it was very tough and did not have an attractive sear on the exterior. It appeared that the meat was sous vide to a rare temp and quickly seared for color. Unfortunately, either the meat quality was poor or it did not cook long enough to break down the muscle tissue. Additionally, the sauce that came with the steak was pretty weak and could have come out of a can.
Anniversary dinner. Complimentary champagne much appreciated. Service was very attentive and responsive. Food was exce.
Really nice place. The chicken and waffles were good. The only complaint is that the chicken was bland and needed some seasoning. The waffles were amazing. Good place for breakfast/brunch.
Katherine’s was an incredible experience. The food was great and the service and hospitality was fantastic. Would definitely recommend.
Continued my son's bday celebration here. Happened to get a waitress I've had a couple of times and really like. The menu is concise but well thought out. Nice wine selection. Lovely as always.
I lived in France for four months, so my expectations were very high. They were too high and were not met. The escargot was not very good. But the duck breast special was delicious. My boyfriend had the salmon and he said it was delicious but the portion was tiny. We were also really looking forward to a chocolate moelleux on the menu, but there was not one.
The waiter was also a bit sarcastic about how many snails would be in the escargot but I did not get his sarcasm. The front desk were also sarcastic about the macaroons being free. Again, I didn’t get the sarcasm.
The manager was very nice with helping us redeem our Rewards Card from Open Table. It was good but I wouldn’t go back anytime soon.
I’m hoping this was just an off night for this restaurant. We waited long periods for everything from drinks to apps to entrees. It was awful.
We were there to celebrate a 60th birthday and had the back private dining area, which was very nice. Overall, our food was lacking in every way. Salads came with no dressing, dressing that was provided when requested was inedible. Server replaced with a caesar salad, which was made with the inner part of romaine, basically white hard lettuce, again, no one finished their salad. Salmon came with different sides than what was on the menu, pork chops were way overdone and again, were not eaten. Pasta dish and Beef dish were acceptable. Wine was nice, but over priced (we had same wine at another restaurant for less). The cheese platter came with 3 basic cheeses, a few nuts and a few dried fruit pieces. Our server was patient and kind and seemed embarrassed that the meal was sub par at best. Sadly, we love to support our downtown restaurants, but based on our experience, we will not be coming back.
Wonderful evening with outstanding service and variety of dishes. Highly recommend sharing the side dishes, and the chef specials were excellent.
We stayed at the hotel so decided to dine here both nights while in town on business. We also got a drink at the bar before and after dinner one night. The food was delicious, however the service was incredibly slow and not always very attentive. I was surprised by how little the waitstaff came around to check on us. It took forever to get a drink the first night we dined (we didn't get our first drink for about 25 minutes after we sat down), bread came after that. At the bar, I wanted a dirty martini but apparently they were out of olive juice so I tried the bloody mary which was literally just vodka and tomato juice...no flavor at all. The soda water was also flat on my third attempt at a drink. I was going to get a port for an aperitif while in the restaurant (night #2), but our server took so long to get back to our table I decided against it. All in all, food is quite good, but be prepared to wait and not feel like too much of a priority......
Everyone and everything about this place is wonderful!
This is the best-looking restaurant in Winston-Salem. The food was mostly pretty good. The desert was phenomenal - you have to get the Opera Cake. It is sort of like a mille feuille and is as good as it gets. My wife had the steak frites and loved it.
We love this restaurant. We eat here 4 out of 5 nights when we’re in Winston-Salem.
We were very disappointed that the OpenTable lunch menu wasn’t available. We were traveling and specifically went there because of the menu. The service was slow (only one server was working).
Had an amazing time. The wait staff was above and beyond. I loved how knowledgable our waitress Katherine was. She made my 15 yr old boy feel comfortable and my visiting Daughter 25 extra comfortable. All of the od'ouvres there were were delicate and refreshing. Loved Chef Rob and his creations for our main course along with Katherine's suggestions on beverages.
Everything was wonderful! Food, service were great. The restaurant was very very cold.
Service was excellent. Food was good but somewhat pricy for some dishes.
The food and service was excellent, but the noise and music was entirely too loud to truly enjoy a fine meal. I would return and recommend to friends but would advise folks not to go if they want to carry on a normal conversation or if you want a quiet place for a special occasion.
Lovely atmosphere, great service, delicious food. A real treat.
Excellent service, excellent food, excellent decor! We went for my husband's birthday and every person we came in contact with wished him a happy birthday! That is superb communication and dedication to your customers! The food was amazing!!!
The service was not attentive. We waited an hour for our food and then the food was under cooked (raw), over cooked (tough), and cold to the point of being uneatable. The staff did not seem terribly concerned with our disappointment. They did offer us complimentary dessert, but no one wanted anymore food from the restaurant.
Food was very disappointing. We have been there many times and this was by far the worst. Service had improved greatly, and noise level was a bit better, but still loud.
Great experience! Service was outstanding and the food was excellent!
The food was great and the service was outstanding. This was our first time at Katharine and we will definitely go back.
Always a treat to eat at the Katharine. Great food, service and atmosphere. Could be in NYC or another metropolitan city.
Average restaurant with good ambiance. Wait staff were pleasant enough but certainly not overly helpful or charismatic. Food, for the most part, was relatively bland and uninspired.
Amazing experience for first timers! The food was delicious, staff was knowledgeable and water & wine glass never went empty!!
We went for our anniversary and had a great experience.
Our server barely waited on us and the food was a little over cooked. The manager on duty was top notch.
Food, service and ambiance were great. The only negative was that the music was a bit too loud. We went to catch up with our niece, but had a difficult time with conversation because of the volume.
We had reservations and came early to have a drink at the bar. Edward was our bartender and he was fantastic. I had the best drink I’ve had in awhile. I think it was called the smoky manhattan. We were having such a great time, we decided to eat at the bar. I had the trout. Absolutely delicious! Can’t wait to go back!
Drinks, alcoholic, are way over priced for what you receive.
My spouse's steak was under seasoned as well as the chicken dish I ordered.
Restaurant is beautiful.
Service not trained.
Food was not prepared well.
Salmon very salty.
Great ambiance but just ok food. It was a busy night (Valentine’s Day) and the staff was really unprepared. Service was very poor.
We waited 30 minutes despite having a reservation, and even at that we had to ask multiple times about being seated as other guests we seated before us who had reservations after us.
Booked a table for 2 for 8:30. Didn’t get a seat till 8:50, and then food wasn’t delivered until 9:45. Tables were very cramped together. Food was delicious but overall service was poor. Wouldn’t return.
Dinner at The Katharine is always an outstanding experience. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and the food is the very best Winston Salem has to offer.
French cuisine with a southern twist! This might sound ambitious but it is exactly what Chef Adam Barnett delivers from his open kitchen. This should be your "go-to" restaurant if you are looking for amazing food in a great atmosphere (need I say dining at the Empire State Building "South"?!).
