Mariel was such a great server! The manager was very polite as well. I don’t leave reviews often but I felt the need to tonight. They delivered great customer service, and the food was delicious. The interior design is eye catching and their music is on point, along with all the other aspects of the restaurant. I will definitely bevback again soon.
Our server talked it up...meh. Maybe talked it up too much. Actual delivery was disappointing. Ordered the best of everything, didn’t feel like that’s what we got. Consistently okay from drinks to dessert. We were hoping for special!
Hidden spot in River North. Happy I found it!
Delicious food. The sea bass skewer was amazing!!!
Such a fun, energetic place. Food and drinks are great and it is a perfect weekend spot.
Really slow lunch service. There was only one or two waiters and lunch took a total of two hours, despite my notice that we had a 75 minute window. The sushi was lackluster and all of the rice in the sushi was heavily buttered. Fish did not seem fresh. Will not be back.
I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT. From the service to the fabulous cocktails to the sashimi and robata.....AMAZING. Highly recommend the unagi, hamachi, spicy tuna, negima......all just amazing. Plum dog Millionaire is my new favorite cocktail.
we had a great experience. We will Definitely return on our next trip there.
Meh. Money is better spent elsewhere.
My wife and I adore sushi and go to Chicago often for theater. This wonderful restaurant is a 5 minute walk from the theater and so we decided to try it. What a great call on our part. As you are escorted to your table, you will be welcomed by the restaurant staff on your way there. There is a wide array of sushi, sashimi, skewers, rolls as well as main dishes. The flavors pop and everything is fresh and delicious. Be sure to save room for the desserts, especially the Carnival which is a definite show for your table as well as those nearby. The service is great (thank you Victoria et al) and the management (Daniel and Omar) will see to it that you are cared for well. I had some questions about Sake and learned a great deal thanks to Daniel such that I know have some baseline knowledge that will assist us in the future but more importantly for when we return to this gem of a restaurant.
As soon as we entered we were greeted by a friendly hostess and shown right to our table. Mariel was absolutely phenomenal, both with her service and recommendations. The Katana roll was exquisite and offered a unique flavor profile that showcased their fine spicy tuna with a little added heat from the jalapeño on top. The ambience reminded me of a LA vibe that was modern and luxurious and their filet mignon was cooked to perfection. With the recommendation from Mariel, we decided to try the Mochi and we were very happy that we did. We would definitely come back, not only to Katana but directly to Mariel!!
Greeted warmly by Omar (Manager) and Mariel did a great job recommending different dishes and drink combinations. Daniel (General Manager) came over and introduced himself as well. Great attention to detail and discussions about the food and drinks. Dessert was really cool.
Love love love the sushi and the drinks! I just wish they had a few more vegetarian options, especially since Japanese cuisine has fabulous tofu dishes.
Friendly and professional staff, server (Eddie) was absolutely the best, food was just perfect! Thank you!
Awesome robata and sushi.
Great food and spectacular service!
Really enjoyed the subtle preparations across the entire menu. Well done!
Wonderful experience. Food was amazing.
At Katana we had a salad, a hot appetizer, an assortment of robata grill skewers (chicken, fish and beef), 2 robata entrees and 2 sushi rolls. All were excellent and enjoyed by my husband and our 2 boys 12 and 13. Definitely treat yourself to the rich, luscious skewers. The sea bass was decadent. Also, make sure you have some of the fresh, inventive sushi. If you like Octopus, the spicy tako roll is a must.
Be prepared: this is slow, coursed event dining.
The dining room itself is lovely.
Amazing food. Eddie is an excellent server. A must choice in Chicago.
The service was poor and extremely slow despite there being so few people in the restaurant. The food was was not outstanding.
Bento box at lunch was great deal. The wagyu skewer wasn’t worth it but the salmon is something to come back for. Loved that the Mark, the manager, stopped by to check up on us and came with a complementary birthday mock-tail for my wife. The drink he made up was delicious and left us looking for another with vodka. Server also was nice enough to drop off a birthday mochi, the wasbi wasn’t for us.
We had a good time at Katana. Our sever was great and super patient with our large group.
We loved every single bite. Popcorn shrimp was a stand out, as was the Katana roll. Service was fantastic. We’ll be back.
Considering all the things that make a great restaurant, Katana was an A+. Our server, food and vibe were impeccable. Our favorite new place.
Katana is a fun sushi/robata bar in River North. We had a great meal pre-concert and would definitely go back!
The food at Katana was good, very good. The service was also excellent. The only negative is Katana is another one of those establishment that has not figure out if it wants to be a bar or a restaurant. As a result, you are eating to loud rave music (good music but loud) with host screaming something trendy every time they seat someone.
Here’s why I wouldn’t recommend Katana:
You don’t get you money’s worth. Plates are microscopic. Maki rolls are tiny per piece. It doesn’t make values-sense to dine here. You can go to sushi dokku for better food, better portions, better prices. Check competitors before going here.
Fantastic all around meal!
My server was incredible and patient. I liked her more than my date.
Excelente servicio, los platillos muy bien presentados, muy buena musica. Ambiente
Everything was great there for date night!! Gabe was very intuned with our needs and very knowledgeable about the menu.
Sushi was fresh. Wait staff friendly. Would be a 5 star if they had more beyond the standard tuna, salmon, yellowtail options.
First time at Katana and it was amazing. I’ll definitely be back. They coursed our food out perfectly so I never felt too full or rushed. I’d highly recommend the Maguro Carpaccio to start. I’m still thinking about it!
Nothing-special sushi, which you can get in Wholefoods at 1/3 of the price
We are truly disappointed you did not see the value in our food menu. We do receive all of our fish and meat multiple times a week from all over the world! Our Wagyu beef is imported from Japan along with the Bincho coal we use to cook our Robata selections. Our Head Sushi Chef receives a specialty box of fish direct from the Japanese fish market every week for our 10-course Omakase special on Thursday evenings. We hope that we can have you back in soon to enjoy our high quality selections!
The service was great and the small plates were prepared perfectly. It’s listed as $ but really should be $$ or $$. The sushi rolls were good but not at the level we expect from a downtown Chicago location. If this was on the outskirts of the city I would rate it much higher.
Wow night at Katana celebrating our birthdays. We are 3 generations proud, gma/dtr & Grand dtr and the experience amazed! First time at Katana. David Served in every way, guiding us in our beverage & menu selections for a wide ranging taste adventure. He topped the nite with a flaming cotton candy Birthday dessert that shades all others. DJ kept the mood. And Mark Longo! Manager of Managers! Thank you for making our night.
Went for a date on a late Friday evening. Vibe was similar to a club, which was very fun, but didn't quite match the interior design or the food. Sushi was high quality, consistent, and delicious.
Fantastic food, service and management.
Came here to celebrate a friends engagement. Mariel our server did a fantastic job making the whole night special. She provided complimentary champagne and mochi dessert. I cannot say thank you enough for making the night so unforgettable and special. Plus your happy hour menu is on fire!! Would love to have a spicy tuna/california/philly roll as opposed to the hand rolls though.
Excellent food and service, can't go wrong here.
