We had a wonderful experience at Karma during a weekend getaway to DC. We were lucky that we landed at Karma during restaurant week at had the three course dinner. Each course was excellent, appropriately paced with great service. All three courses had some unique element to them, for instance on of the dessert option was a lavender kulfi! I’m indian and have had many types of kulfi, but never lavender kulfi which was delish!
It was great to try out the Restaurant Week menu for dinner. The food was excellent. We had the chicken kebabs and the shrimps for starters. Shrimps were superb. Then we had the Branzino peri peri and the lamb curry with cashews. Both were wonderful. Definitely will be coming to the restaurant more regularly to try out the very interesting menu.
Very loud. Waiter rarely came by, although he spoke w/ diners on either side of us. Mushroom and truffle Naan was very dry w/ few mushrooms. Lamb shank was much smaller than in most other restaurants. Will not be returning. Was second visit.
Outstanding food, attention and service. Menu with many excellent choices. I’ll be back!
An enjoyable dining experience all around except for the food that I ordered. I ordered dal makhani as I do many other restaurant and it wasn’t to my taste and is the among the worst I’ve had (the worst being somewhere in suburban Atlanta). My partner’s food was great and our friends’ food was great.
Delicious, innovative food and the absolute best cocktails! Bartenders were terrific. Service was a little bumpy. I will go back; repeatedly.
We were there during restaurant week, unbeknownst to us because we were traveling in for a conference from out of town. The only seating available was at the counter, which was not our first choice, but it was very enjoyable.
Súper exquisite to indulge you and your special other
This is not a typical Indian restaurant. With high prices, it tries really hard to make fusion dishes that fail to be authentic nor new style of Indian dishes.
The appetizers were good. Mint chicken and chili prawns. The main dishes, Mushrooms bryanti and lamb korma, were salty and blend. Finally, carrot and ice cream were good.
The ambience was very noisy. There was a group of people who was making a lot of noise and the staff failed to take any actions.
Recommend go visit your local Indian restaurant unless you are into wasting money for mediocre food.
We had a nice table for 2 along the privacy wall for our first visit to Karma Modern Indian. Our waiter was very helpful in explaining the menu and offering suggestions. We started with the cheese appetizer and sampled chicken, lamb and seafood dishes. We also ordered the signature lobster masala entree to share. Naan and a nice red wine complemented our meal. The five samplers along with the lobster were more than enough for the 2 of us. The dishes were beautifully presented and delicious and the chicken, lamb and seafood were all cooked to perfection!
We had a very nice evening all around!
If you expect Indian food this is not the place to go. The menu is limited in options and the staff is pretentious and haughty. Maybe it’s trendy to ask “What is your choice of water?” but for most customers they aren’t at a restaurant for the water. The food should be the focus. The taste of the food did have mild mediocre Indian flavors which were acceptable. The starter dish of pesto paneer was three pieces of paneer with what was a tasty simple red pepper smear on the plate and priced at $14. After the food, the lack of social skills of our waiter became even more apparent. We were given a dessert menu and when my husband pointed to a particular item and ask “What is this?”. The waiter said, “that is a dessert menu.” Now we aren’t novices to Indian cuisine and the item in question was nothing I’ve heard of or seen in Indian cuisine while dining at Indian restaurants. I would say that a half star would be my rating if it were available.
Cava sparkling wine (very nice) Chicken Tikka starter (very spicy sauce, but rally tasty), Lamb Roganjosh entree, Naan bread. Malbec wine with the Lamb. Nice palate cleanser between courses.
Dessert was very different, a "traditional " of carrot, lentils and pistachio pastries with orange caviar. The best Indian meal I have had since Britain. The service was attentive but not oppressive and so pleasant. What a wonderful meal and experience. Next time I am in Washington I will head here for one night at least.
Great food and phenomenal service in a contemporary, atmospheric restaurant
The service and food are always incredible here. One of my favorites. The fact that the bar is amazing is the perfect pairing.
This was our third visit and we hope to be back soon. Karma always makes us feel like honored guests. The staff is knowledgeable and skilled. The food is gorgeously presented and completely delicious, and they always give you something extra that makes us feel special. We will be back soon.
Great Indian food with some non-routine choices. Attentive service. Modern and attractive. A bit pricey.
Service was stellar and everything tasted amazing. The serving sizes were fit for a higher end restaurant. Trust your server to curate your meal - ours did a great job. Extremely attentive staff and beautiful decor. Will be back many more times!
The food was super tasty but pricey for Indian food.
We went before a concert and to celebrate finishing finals and it was amazing. It was my mom’s first time eating Indian food and she loved it. Highly recommend.
We found Karma on Open Table based on their positive reviews, and it did not disappoint. This is hands down the best Indian food i have ever had. Their servers were extremely attentive and helped us navigate the menu beautifully. I had the sea bass and it was so perfect it just melted in my mouth. The coconut cake for dessert was a perfect way to end the night. I will definitely be back when I am in the area again.
Warm greeting! Aromas to enhance your appetite!
Great food! Friendly, competent service!
Karma Modern Indian went above and beyond to make my boyfriend's birthday special. We will definitely be back!
The food was delicious! We sat at the bar and watched the chefs work. Ordered Goan fish, butter chicken, and garlic naan, all were great. My friend (who is Indian) said the fish was very authentic.
Overpriced food and drinks. The Tandori shrimp at $12 was a joke.
Food was great but our server was completely absent throughout our lunch, only occasionally checking to see if we needed anything. By the time he checked on us we had often already had to flag down someone else for help. Plus, he missed one of the items that we ordered. Poor service for such a fine restaurant.
The minute we entered, the noise level was apparent. Concrete walls and concrete floors did not absorb any noise. The restaurant design was minimal, thinking it needed more decor, felt like a big square room, no candles on the table, but the silverware and plates were modern and beautiful. The food was tasty. I had the butter chicken, side-spicy baked okra, and the garlic naan was fantastic. However, each naan was $4/ per piece, which made you watch your carb in-take :-) If your looking for your traditional mango lassie or mango martini; not on the menu. The cocktail list averaged $14-17, which didn't look interesting to me, so I stuck to Pellegrino.
Had an amazing experience and meal at Karma last night. We had a very large party, 12 people, with kids😅 for my husband's birthday. Karma was extremely accommodating and the service was excellent! The food was wonderful and everything was explained in detail, so we could make educated choices. Halibut was a favorite, biryani, all the small plates. A wonderful experience, thank you Karma!
After our second visit, Karma has become one of our favorite restaurants. Everything is beautifully prepared and you will not find a prettier presentation inside the beltway. Superb service, outstanding food. We will be back again soon.
From start to finish it was a wonderful experience. Our server was the best I’ve ever had and we enjoyed all of his recommendations! So so so delicious!
A terrific modern restaurant - beautifully appointed, open and airy, light, exceptional service, and of course delicious. Highly recommend Karma as a great neighborhood restaurant.
Great find near Capital One Center. Great setting, very good and innovative cuisine.
Sat at the table facing the kitchen. Great watching.
The food was extremely flavorful and unique. Definitely one of the best Indian restaurants I have been to.
We are very happy to have Karma in our neighborhood.
Friendly adventure into updated ethnic Indian food.
Great bar, too!
The food is amazing, very authentic and the staff are very friendly and well knowledgeable of the menu.
The food is great.. The chef knows what it means when the name of the restaurant says Modern.
We initially found this restaurant because it was on the list for DC cocktail week. When we arrived, unfortunately, they said they weren’t offering the menu anymore but we decided to dine here anyway.
We had the tandoori shrimp as an appetizer. It was so good! I just wish there were more shrimp included. For entrees, I had the venison and my friend had the tandoori lamb chops. Both were seasoned to perfection and the meat was very tender! We ordered a side of garlic naan with our meal and it was so fluffy and delicious!! Along with our meals, I ordered the colonial shrub cocktail and it was very strong but good! My friend ordered a purple looking drink, I think it was the Brooklyn? Well she had 3 of them and I ordered one for my second round! The bartender even came up to our table during our meal and personally brought a drink to us. For dessert, we shared the coconut cake and another dish but it resembled flan or creme brûlée.
Overall, the service and food here was impeccable! Everyone on the staff was super attentive, removing dishes or checking to make sure we had everything we needed. And when I mean everyone, literally every staff member from a manager to a bus boy made sure we were okay.
I will definitely return to try some of the more tradition Indian dishes. My only complaints are the fact that they weren’t offering the DC cocktail week menu as advertised and that they don’t validate your parking for the garage directly beneath the restaurant.
Thanks Karma Modern Indian! We’ll be back soon!
Lassaad was a terrific guide. Wild mushroom naan alone was worth the trip. Butter chicken was great. Grilled okra was extraordinary. Glad I took Lassaad’s recommendation on the red wine. Can’t wait to get back here.
We had a great experience at Karma. The drinks were fantastic and the food was excellent. The ambiance was good but a little too noisy.
What a find!! Great food, great advice from our server, fantastic service. I've recommended the restaurant to 3 or 4 friends, already, and will continue to do so. The branzino was out of this world. The sag paneer was perfect...and the tandori chicken was moist, flavorful and tender. Na'an (3 different kinds....) was great, as well. Do yourself a favor...give Karma a try. Bring your friends!!!
