Contemporary Indian
Creatively and relatively re imagining classic Indian cuisine and flavors, Karma Modern Indian uses locally-sourced ingredients prepared with traditional and modern cooking methods. We aim to make Indian food more approachable by introducing the traditional cuisine with contemporary plating and forward-thinking flavor profiles. Favorites like naan bread, Palak paneer and Chicken Tikka are still part of the foundation of our menu, but we’ve put a modern twist on various dishes with unexpected seasonings and ingredients like truffle oil, pesto and star fruit.

We went for our anniversary and were treated like royalty. The service was amazing. We were welcomed by smiling faces, our table had a special sign that said “happy anniversary” and after our dinner completed we were offered both cake and champagne on the house. Dinner service was phenomenal. We were offered tastings by the chef, a delicious sorbet between courses and the wait staff even cleaned our table mid way through dinner service. The location was super convenient yet intimate and cozy. I didn’t feel like I was in the city, yet I was. The ambience was very relaxing and the decor was modern and chic. Overall we had a fabulous time and would highly recommend if you’re celebrating a special occasion!

The food was very very good. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was because we looked to order a few items with less spice and were told the sauces were already made and not available less spicy. I understand making sauces ahead of time to give them time to blend and develop flavor. That said, maybe offering the same sauce without the heat would be good. One of my dining companions had chosen one entree and then passed on it because he couldn't order it low spice. This was the case for his second choice entree as well. Normally we wouldn't have asked but the roasted cauliflower appetizer was extremely spicy (and wasn't marked as such on the menu) so we were concerned what the entree dishes would be like. Our service was good and we were able to hear one another over dinner. The food we did order was excellent and obviously prepared by very talented chefs.

Outstanding upscale Indian dinner. Would normally never do a complete dinner menu for the table but the three of us were intrigued by the "Inquisitve Dinner". It was off the charts delicious, lots of food and many different tastes. Highly recommend the food and the staff was exceptional.

NOT traditional Indian. you will miss not having mango lassi here (only reason i gave a 4 star- traditional drink should be part of menu). and no falooda (hard to find anyhow)
This is a modern twist on some traditional indian. presentation cant be beat. everything was outstanding.
i had the grilled vegetables and grilled cauliflour, was mouthwatering blend of flavor. Garlic naan was what you would expect. and i was blown away with the lamb cubes on a bed of apricot and papaya.
for desert i had warm carrot halwa, with ceushed pistacios. best ive ever had. service was superb. server was wonderful
i wish we had one of these restaurants in Boston

Karma Modern Indian
Responded 5 days ago

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review and we are pleased to learn that you enjoyed the food and service at Karma during your recent visit. We shall look forward to hosting you again and we hope to be in Boston one day. Our concept is not traditional Indian but that is not the reason we don't serve Mango Lassi. On the contrary, although Lassi is a traditional drink (plain yogurt drink - served with salt or sugar), Mango Lassi is not served in restaurants in northern India. Regards, Karma Team

We went to Karma to celebrate my 50th birthday and it was the perfect spot for my family. The ambiance was lively, the food was spectacular - fresh takes on traditional Indian cooking but not completely out there. The naans, paneer dishes, and desserts were to die for. Don't miss the Kulfi with orange caviar for dessert!

A little pricey for Indian food....but very good. The mushroom truffle naan is AMAZINGLY delicious and so was the Butter Chicken. We also ordered the lamb roganjosh and the lamb chops. My dinner companions were a little surprised that the roganjosh wasnt really that spicy.

Karma is a marvelous place to dine. I very much enjoy the food. As a note, our server said our food came with naan so we ordered some, but it was an additional charge. It was delicious, mind you, but misleading. I will be back!

Food was amazing, but there was soo much noise we could barely hear each other talk. The service was ok, but the busboy was absolutely awful and slammed the plates so hard on the table before our meal arrived that it surprised all of us. He also nearly threw the silverware next to the plates. And finally, he repeatedly bumped really hard into my chair and didnt bother to ever apologize. Ive come here once before and had a great overall experience, the busboy was pretty much the problem last night.

Truly a modern take on tradition home-cooked Indian food. All the tastes and smells of the familiar wrapped in sleek new packaging - a culinary delight! We dove into the tasting menu appropriately titled the "Inquisitive Experience." Certainly the way to go at this establishment if you want a wide variety spanning the entire menu. The wait staff was pleasant and attentive. We were smiling for the whole meal!!

The staff was wonderful, the space is modern and sleek, and the food is great. You can't ask for much more than that.
I arrived just before 7, and was encouraged to order a drink before Happy Hour ended at 7. One featured drink is: the waiter asked me for my favorite spirit and what kind of cocktail I am looking for. Then they create new one-of-a kind take on your favorite and serve it to you--for $9!
For dinner, my wife and I ordered the "For the Inquisitive" menu. The restaurant serves nine different items--including scallops, branzino, lamb kebab, naan, and dessert--for $41 each. It's an unbeatable deal.
We can't wait to go back.

We had the BEST time! My parents were visiting from out of town and I wanted to make sure they had the best experience possible. Everything was superb from the staff that took amazing care of us to the delicious food and even the ambiance that gives the place a fun vibe with a fine-dining flare! The manager came by multiple times to check on us and was a pleasure to speak with. I absolutely recommend checking this place out if you’re interested in high-quality food and lovely people (especially the kind hostesses that we’re extremely accommodating). This place is 100% class and easily the best Indian food (maybe the best of any style food) in the DMV!!

Birthday dinner with a large group. The bartender, waiter and manager took great care of us and especially the birthday boy. Including a free round of champagne. Service was excellent and the food delicious. Not your average Indian. Rather the dishes have a very contemporary, modern twist or feel too them. Would definitely go back despite the prices which are on the high end for Indian.

Food was outstanding. Only ONE bartender servicing entire restaurant- considering the price points, this was unacceptable. Waiter was not passionate about good service and keeping everyone happy. Additionally he didn’t know about menu items. He forgot beverage orders after two requests. Seemed more excited to “get off work” than do his job. With so many new restaurants in town, poor outdoor lighting and sketchy individuals panhandling out front of Karma, I hope their Karma changes or they won’t make it despite the great food.

Crummy service, over-bright lighting and an under decorated space. The food was ridiculous, though; too 3-5 Indian meals of my life. We’ll definitely be back.

I love Indian food. Karma does a modern take on some traditional ideas—try the tandoori cauliflower and the wild mushroom naan. The service was seamless, filling water glasses and replacing dishes as new small plates arrived, never once interrupting our table conversation. I look forward to visiting again soon.
