Chef Mike Isabella opened Kapnos along the Fourteenth Street Corridor in July 2013. Isabella draws inspiration from Northern Greece to create a menu of spreads, breads, vegetables and other small plates, including his signature wood-grilled octopus. Two wood-fire grills with rotating spits and a large oven for stone-baked flat breads service the 160-seat restaurant. Guests enjoy carvings from whole animals that have been spit-roasted all day, including lamb, goat, duck, chicken, and suckling pig. Kapnos is open for dinner seven nights a week.

The food came out a slower than when I anticipated but it was a very large fish that we ordered and it was definitely worth the wait

We LOVE Kapnos. Staff is super friendly and accommodating, even when my husband and I show up with our 9 month old. We always have a great time. Food include some basic Greek classics, such as tzatziki and taramasalata, but goes well beyond it with fantastic grill and fish dishes; cocktails are innovative and tasty, they have outdoor space, which we love, and they never disappointed! I personally don't find the indoor space particularly charming - a little cold. But still, it's a very cool place. Highly recommended.

Food was excellent. Moussaka superbly done in your own pan. Spreads excellent. A gourmet Greek experience with displayed barbeque.

Four people for dinner and we ordered four different foods. My lamb shanks were very tender and others had compliments. The others with lamb chops and bisteki had great food and wine and enjoyed it all.
Our server was Maria and she was also a great asset to the evening.

The food was delicious, but the service was awful! We ordered a lot of food to share; however, the server never ordered a significant portion of our food. We continually had to call over the server to refill our water glasses. There was problem with their speaker system and we sat in terrible feedback for a long time.

Wonderful meal and experience! We went to Kapnos for my daughter's high school graduation. She wanted to go because she watched George Pagonis when he was on Top Chef. The restaurant has an open kitchen and so she was able to watch him cook. Additionally, he was very gracious to come out and take pictures with her after our meal.

We ordered a few dishes for the table to go with the whole spit-roasted chicken we selected for our main meal. The chicken, which came with potatoes, was delicious. It was lemony and moist. There was plenty for the 5 of us and we took some home. For the sides, we chose the crispy brussels sprouts, fried cauliflower, sampling of three spreads (we chose tzatziki, melitzanosalata, and tyrokaftari) which were served with a wonderful stone baked flatbread with a subtle garlic taste. We also ordered the spanikopita. We finished everything! All the dishes had interesting layers of flavors.

We did save room for dessert! We order dessert to share. The loukoumades was fantastic - , cinnamon sugar donuts, greek coffee ice cream, caramel sauce. The coffee ice cream was really outstanding with a strong coffee flavor.

Everyone loved the meal. The service was excellent, the atmosphere is open and modern. I highly recommend Kapnos for a great experience.

Our waiter was great but very slow. The busgirl was the opposite, she tried to take my friend's plate why my friend was literally about to put the fork in her mouth, then while we were waiting for the check, she started wiping down the table getting crumbs everywhere. It was clear she wanted us out and it made us feel unwelcome. Wasn't our fault the waiter was moving slow. Cocktail list is pretentious, but the food was good.

Been to Kapnos many times since they opened. It's a relic of what it used to be. Restaurant was empty and the bar was sparse. Gone are the crowds and fun atmosphere. Food is just alright, still high priced for the portions and quality. Where has all that great staff gone? They were the draw! They now have Happy hour specials that are reasonably priced, but very small portions: they're called "bites" and that is literal: a bite, so not really a bargain.

I can't see this place surviving long. Too bad!

Dinner here was amazing!!! My friend and I did the spread tasting, bought a bottle of rose, tried a few cold mezze offerings, and had dessert. Fun menu if you want to try traditional Greek food with a twist. Service was very thoughtful, patient, and attentive. The only negative was being seated in a tight space where a curtain was kind of resting on my friend's shoulder - I will request a better location next time (because I will be going back!!!).

My Greek in-laws were in town for Mothers Day so I had tough critics. I picked Kapnos after reading reviews. We were there for an early dinner with my two small kids (they're one and two years old). The waitress and hostess were very patient and just all-around awesome. As a mom, I really really appreciated that. Its not always easy going out to eat with babies. Moreover, my in-laws called their Greek friends on the way home and told them how amazing the food was. So I got some brownie-points. :o) Highly recommend. Great restaurant.

My first time at Kapnos and I am impressed! Delicious food! Very nice presentation! Portions might be on the small side for some people, but since we were sharing it turned out great. 4 people we shared 4 entrees and 1 appetizer. The decor was nice. Slightly on the noisy side but not impossible to have a conversation. Wait staff were all friendly and helpful. I will definitely be dining here again!

Clean and food menu was expansive but we barely saw our waitress and had to ask others to help with our needs. For a 2 hour bottomless mimosa brunch I had only been given 1 refill nearly three-quarters of the way through. I think they could have been faster with this service and may have held back in order to limit the number of drinks they gave out. Food came out very fast but the time it took to request service was a little frustrating. I had a great experience the first time I went there and this Mother's Day brunch was a little bit of a let down.

I have eaten here several times and the food and service has always been great. I cannot remember the waitress' name but she was excellent and very attentive. I have recommended to Kapnos to friends and coworkers and they have thanked me for the recommendation. Looking forward to the next visit to try something new/different on the menu.

By far my favorite restaurant in DC! I've eaten brunch and dinner there a few times and have enjoyed every bite. The food is exemplary, there were no plates left unfinished and I could order the Brussel Sprouts every time. It's one of my favorites! Wine selections are nice, too!

Four of us ate here at 5pm on a Sunday evening. The noise level was manageable at that time; we requested a "quiet space" and were seated in a booth in the rear of the restaurant -- perfect for the four of us who all have hearing issues. We shared delicious mezze dishes, most of which were outstanding: the eggplant with tomato and feta cheese, roasted brussel sprouts w/sour cherries, a lamb dish, and roasted beets. The mushroom in fillo pie was a little odd as we could not taste mushrooms in it and the spit yellow pea puree was a bit bland in spite of the pomegranite molasses swirled on top. Presentations were lovely. We share a bottle of the house Momenvasia house white. No dessert except coffee. This is the second time I have eaten here and will definitely come back. Once the weather is warmer, I think the patio will suit us nicely in terms of noise issues. BTW, the service was excellent.
