Chef Mike Isabella opened Kapnos along the Fourteenth Street Corridor in July 2013. Isabella draws inspiration from Northern Greece to create a menu of spreads, breads, vegetables and other small plates, including his signature wood-grilled octopus. Two wood-fire grills with rotating spits and a large oven for stone-baked flat breads service the 160-seat restaurant. Guests enjoy carvings from whole animals that have been spit-roasted all day, including lamb, goat, duck, chicken, and suckling pig. Kapnos is open for dinner seven nights a week.

We arrived at Kapnos on a Friday night to find the restaurant not very crowded but extremely noisy - mostly because of an echo-chamber effect! Fortunately there was a table outside on the quiet patio, and that made the evening quite enjoyable. If we had not been able to get an outside table, I'm not sure we would have stayed. No complaints about service or ambience, which was prompt and efficient. The best part is the food: genuinely Greek, really excellent and reasonably priced. I would come again for dinner as long as the weather is good and one can sit on the patio!

My husband and I had a fabulous meal and the service was great. Appetizer was delicious and the Branzino came out piping hot sitting on top of a delectable broth with vegetables. A definite go back to.

We loved this place. The bacon wrapped figs and branzino were delicious. The spreads and salads were very good too. Very nice staff.

I had heard good things about this place including the 100 best in the Washingtonian. Unfortunately this was not my experience.

We really enjoyed our dining experience! The lively contemporary atmosphere is appealing and upbeat. Two of the four dishes were outstanding. The dolmades might be the best stuffed grape leaves I’ve come across. Not your typical filling of humdrum grains of bland rice but a toothsome flavorful package with a dab of lemon cream magic! Do not miss the eggplant spread, the flavors explode in your mouth. The snapper and the hanger steak were both very good but not truly inspired. The service was excellent, courteous and well timed. This was a great date night choice. Next time we’ll bring friends for some good table sharing!

We chose the tasting menu for 5. The mezze were out of this world-consistently textured dips and an array of tasty, traditional dishes. From the sea offerings were flavorful. The meat, however, was served in a trough-like dish that was heavy and unremarkable - didn’t include the highly touted chicken but 2 lambs and lots of pork chunks. Needs refinement. But all in all a very solid meal. Great ambience. A bit on the long side - three hours. Would definitely recommend dining-perhaps not the tasting menu.

Three of us enjoyed a nice dinner on a Saturday night, starting with the mezze and adding shrimp, lamp chops, and lamb stew. All were good; nothing outstanding, but good. Service is friendly and prompt. Parking is a nightmare. The noise level was OK, but on a busy Saturday night, it would be very loud indeed.

Kapnos continues to be one of the most consistently good restaurants in DC. There are always 2 or more dishes that always reach the "Excellent" standard, and the rest are always nothing less than "Good."

The food is AMAZING here. Especially recommend the spicy cheese spread and extra bread (the bread is divine!). Everything, and I mean everything, tasted delicious and the presentation was rustic and beautiful! Can't wait to come back and try more dishes!!

Parking was an issue. Valet available on Friday and Saturday only. I dined on Sunday. The staff said there was plenty of free parking on the street when I called. That was not true. Once inside the service was good and the food was good as well. Great small plate experience. I would eat there again with the knowledge that I will need to plan ahead for parking unless it is a Friday/Saturday with valet service.

I live in the neighborhood and this is my favorite restaurant on 14th street. There are many good ones but Kapnos is always exceptional. The menu changes so there is always something new to try. This time it was the Watermelon Salad, loved it!

Our group was at Kapnos for a mini baby sprinkle for my sister; we did the all you can each brunch. Of course my sister could not drink; they were gracious enough to make a special drink for her that was splendidly delicious. They were super attentive and answered all our questions. The food came out quickly and the quality was fantastic.

I highly recommended this restaurant based on a previous experience and was kind of let down this time around. I ate here with another group a few years ago and got the lamb shoulder. I thought it was one of the most amazing lamb dishes I ever had. Sooo...I was waiting until I could find another group to go back and order the lamb shoulder again. This time it wasn’t that great and I was very disappointed. It was very tough and not as juicy and tender as I remembered. It was more cut up into pieces instead of shredded and was dry. It was a little tough to eat. The first time, it basically melted in your mouth and was more like pulled lamb. Very tender and juicy. We also ordered potatoes with it which seemed a little strange. Like they were cooked in vinegar and that’s all we could taste. The ambiance and waitstaff were great. Not sure if I’ll go back.

The octopus was excellent but I thought the brussel sprouts lacked a pesonality. The service was particularly slow in the beginning, and they were out of the wine we asked for, but ultimately the restaurant is a spot for a date, despite having a rather underwhelming night.

Horrible. We were rushed out. The staff actually turned the lights off during our dinner. Not sure why they accept a 915 reservation when they want to close at 10. As we walked out - I think the manager was in front of us. Mike Isabella needs to pay more attention to his restaurants. They are slipping one at a time. Sad.

We LOVE Kapnos. Staff is super friendly and accommodating, even when my husband and I show up with our 9 month old. We always have a great time. Food include some basic Greek classics, such as tzatziki and taramasalata, but goes well beyond it with fantastic grill and fish dishes; cocktails are innovative and tasty, they have outdoor space, which we love, and they never disappointed! I personally don't find the indoor space particularly charming - a little cold. But still, it's a very cool place. Highly recommended.
