Chef Mike Isabella opened Kapnos along the Fourteenth Street Corridor in July 2013. Isabella draws inspiration from Northern Greece to create a menu of spreads, breads, vegetables and other small plates, including his signature wood-grilled octopus. Two wood-fire grills with rotating spits and a large oven for stone-baked flat breads service the 160-seat restaurant. Guests enjoy carvings from whole animals that have been spit-roasted all day, including lamb, goat, duck, chicken, and suckling pig. Kapnos is open for dinner seven nights a week.

Been to Kapnos many times since they opened. It's a relic of what it used to be. Restaurant was empty and the bar was sparse. Gone are the crowds and fun atmosphere. Food is just alright, still high priced for the portions and quality. Where has all that great staff gone? They were the draw! They now have Happy hour specials that are reasonably priced, but very small portions: they're called "bites" and that is literal: a bite, so not really a bargain.

I can't see this place surviving long. Too bad!

Delicious food with fast and friendly service! I especially love the flatbread with three different spreads.

Great food as always - the spicy goat and the lamb were topnotch. We sat outdoors and had the "one in the cup" which is a great use of Pims cup.

Dinner here was amazing!!! My friend and I did the spread tasting, bought a bottle of rose, tried a few cold mezze offerings, and had dessert. Fun menu if you want to try traditional Greek food with a twist. Service was very thoughtful, patient, and attentive. The only negative was being seated in a tight space where a curtain was kind of resting on my friend's shoulder - I will request a better location next time (because I will be going back!!!).

My first time at Kapnos and I am impressed! Delicious food! Very nice presentation! Portions might be on the small side for some people, but since we were sharing it turned out great. 4 people we shared 4 entrees and 1 appetizer. The decor was nice. Slightly on the noisy side but not impossible to have a conversation. Wait staff were all friendly and helpful. I will definitely be dining here again!

Clean and food menu was expansive but we barely saw our waitress and had to ask others to help with our needs. For a 2 hour bottomless mimosa brunch I had only been given 1 refill nearly three-quarters of the way through. I think they could have been faster with this service and may have held back in order to limit the number of drinks they gave out. Food came out very fast but the time it took to request service was a little frustrating. I had a great experience the first time I went there and this Mother's Day brunch was a little bit of a let down.

I have eaten here several times and the food and service has always been great. I cannot remember the waitress' name but she was excellent and very attentive. I have recommended to Kapnos to friends and coworkers and they have thanked me for the recommendation. Looking forward to the next visit to try something new/different on the menu.

By far my favorite restaurant in DC! I've eaten brunch and dinner there a few times and have enjoyed every bite. The food is exemplary, there were no plates left unfinished and I could order the Brussel Sprouts every time. It's one of my favorites! Wine selections are nice, too!

This locations specialty is their smoked meats. We split the lamb shoulder. Its enough for 4 people, and it's outstanding.

Four of us ate here at 5pm on a Sunday evening. The noise level was manageable at that time; we requested a "quiet space" and were seated in a booth in the rear of the restaurant -- perfect for the four of us who all have hearing issues. We shared delicious mezze dishes, most of which were outstanding: the eggplant with tomato and feta cheese, roasted brussel sprouts w/sour cherries, a lamb dish, and roasted beets. The mushroom in fillo pie was a little odd as we could not taste mushrooms in it and the spit yellow pea puree was a bit bland in spite of the pomegranite molasses swirled on top. Presentations were lovely. We share a bottle of the house Momenvasia house white. No dessert except coffee. This is the second time I have eaten here and will definitely come back. Once the weather is warmer, I think the patio will suit us nicely in terms of noise issues. BTW, the service was excellent.

We ordered quite a bit of food - saganaki, the zucchini fritters, brussels sprouts, charred octopus, roasted beets, and the special - a meat platter. Each dish complimented each other without tasting like each other. The surprise of cheese inside the zucchini fritters was lovely. The saganaki is a cheese dish with not overly-sweet apricots. It was delicious with the grilled bread. The special of the evening was the meat platter which any carnivore would love. Tender, not dry. Flavorful but not salty or too peppery. If you are expecting something similar to a gyro or deli-style Greek, it is not. It is a punch up and above, and you will not be disappointed. The desserts were good but in my opinion, not a big highlight. We had the beignet-like donuts and chocolate cake. Moist but nothing spectacular. Service was fantastic. We had to move inside from the a wonderful table outside because of rain. Service did not skip a beat. Even though our server should have changed, Dave stayed with us. Also, he gave us an explanation of the dishes, how much we should order (which he thought was too much for 3), and gave a smart wine recommendation. We are looking forward to our next visit.

The brunch was a great deal at $39.00 with all you can eat and drink. Kapnos provides a wider variety of drinks vs other venues, except no Bloody Marys on the bottomless option. Although, their green tomatillo Bloody Mary is one of my faves! The service with Dave was top notch and the food as good as always. I’ll be back for sure!

We were sat at a small little table that had a constant traffic of people, servers going by. Our waitresss was nice but not really helpful with food choices. We ordered the roasted beet salad with goat cheese. The large amount of beets were barely roasted, some quite hard, no flavour and the amout of goat cheese was a joke. We did enjoy the brussel sprouts, way too much for two people though. My husband got the marinated lamb, it was a plate of "pulled" lamb with some yoghurt sauce. While the lamb was tender, it was fatty and needed some accompaniment. We ended up ordering some pita bread to make a gyro type sandwich. I ordered the Wild Mushroom Phyllo Pie. It was tasty but small. We had the baklava for dessert with coffee. We were hoping to end the meal on a positive note. It was good but not magnificent. We were hoping for authentic greek food but instead paid a lot of money for brussel sprouts and beets

Bartenders are awesome. Poor planning with the hostess left us with a 15 min wait on top of our reserved time so they could get “our table ready”, even though there were 4 other tables open. They placed us at the kids table in the awkward corner next to the hosts podium even though there were window seats available. Other than this the food and service was thpicalllt great!!!

Great food, I felt that the dishes were authentic and absolutely delicious. I was impressed by the presentation of the dishes, I can tell that they take pride in their craftsmanship. The dishes were small, basically tapas but great for sharing if you order several different things on the menu. The menu items are a bit pricey so unfortunately I cannot go every night to Kapnos but every now in then I will be coming in for a date with my partner. Looking forward to next time!

This was our favorite meal during our recent vacation in DC. Everything we ordered was delicious and made with great care -- hummus with flatbread, fried cauliflower, short rib phyllo pie, fried kefalograviera, etc. We only wish we had a restaurant like this in Boston (or that Kapnos publishes a cookbook). Our server Dave was just terrific. Too bad we didn't have a chance to order some of the other items.
