Chef Mike Isabella opened Kapnos along the Fourteenth Street Corridor in July 2013. Isabella draws inspiration from Northern Greece to create a menu of spreads, breads, vegetables and other small plates, including his signature wood-grilled octopus. Two wood-fire grills with rotating spits and a large oven for stone-baked flat breads service the 160-seat restaurant. Guests enjoy carvings from whole animals that have been spit-roasted all day, including lamb, goat, duck, chicken, and suckling pig. Kapnos is open for dinner seven nights a week.

We have very rarely been disappointed with Open Table recommendations so that Kapnos appeared to be the best choice in the Gala Hispanic Theater area. The quality of the food was very good, and the decor was modern and clean. The wine selection was varied. Nevertheless, several issues left us with an unsatisfactory experience. Specifically, the prices for this uptown neighborhood restaurant resembled downtown prices with little justification: for example, dinner portions were very small (salad 3 oz) for $11 and small octopus $17. Also service was slow and inattentive; and no free bread was offered with the entree. The next time we go to dine before a show at the Gala Hispanic Theater, we will find another restaurant.

Excellent Dinner!
Kapnos was highly recommended by our hotel concierge. He sure did not steer us wrong. The menu was very creative so it was a hard choice. Luckily, we were 3 so we were able to order a number of different dishes. Each was truly delicious, with real flavour sensations.
Definitely worth a visit!

The service was horrendous and unapologetic. They were actively trying to impose a bottom to the bottomless brunch. The food was excellent, but the dining experience is only worth it if you dine a la carte.

Very enjoyable evening. Food was amazing. Maria was very helpful with recommendations. The wine list is extensive/excellent. Good beer selection too. Service was excellent! The servings provided plenty of food...we ended up taking some home with us. Overall, we had a great evening.

I almost don’t want to write this review because I want to keep this gem all to myself! The food was incredible, the service was excellent and the price was phenomenal. We were lucky to be their for ‘extended restaurant week’ so it was excellent value. My mum was in town so I wanted to bring her to a classy place that wasn’t too loud. We were lucky to get seats outside. The tapas style food selection was great and our waitress Maria G was fantastic and helped us with recommendations that were delicious! All round a fantastic spot that I would highly recommend.

Overall, it is a great restaurant ... BUT ... the delivery of courses was very uneven for our group of 6 which made it awkward to enjoy dinner, and the manager couldn't figure out for the death of him how to simply split the bill over 4 credit cards. This made the end of the meal feel like a bad dining experience. We all know that the management of this restaurant has been having business challenges at their other establishments, they need to get it together here or they too will be in trouble.

Some of the meats were fatty and most of the food was charred, giving it a burnt flavor. While service was good, I would not go back to this location.

We went for restaurant week dinner. Service was great. Food came out timely and was soooooo delicious. I took my friend who’s been to Greece many times, it filled our cravings. We sat outside on the patio for dinner and it was perfect and relaxing. We ordered tzatziki, dolmades, falafel, spanakopita, seared lamb, and baklava. I’ll be back soon. The whole experience was perfect.

It was my wife’s birthday and we went for brunch but were forced into restaurant week menu as my parents wanted it. The pork was badly cooked and we were not at all impressed. Unfortunately was a bad experience for my wife on her 40th birthday!

I've been to Kapnos 4 times, with family, friends, having dinner and happy hour. Every time it was a great experience. The food quality is stable and to all ours satisfactory. The service was always great. We never had trouble making reservation. The restaurant setting is so welcoming and relaxing for our gathering. The only thing to note is it is slightly on the pricy side, but overall worthy of the money.

This was one of the best meals we’ve had in DC. We went for Sunday brunch. $39 for all you can eat and drink. You cannot find a better deal. The service was awesome. As soon as our drinks were empty, another would show up. You have a choice of 3 different mimosas or 2 different sangrias. The menu was quite large for a brunch. Everything we ordered came out within 5 minutes of ordering. It was all delicious and very authentic greek. We will be back.

We arrived at Kapnos on a Friday night to find the restaurant not very crowded but extremely noisy - mostly because of an echo-chamber effect! Fortunately there was a table outside on the quiet patio, and that made the evening quite enjoyable. If we had not been able to get an outside table, I'm not sure we would have stayed. No complaints about service or ambience, which was prompt and efficient. The best part is the food: genuinely Greek, really excellent and reasonably priced. I would come again for dinner as long as the weather is good and one can sit on the patio!

We really enjoyed our dining experience! The lively contemporary atmosphere is appealing and upbeat. Two of the four dishes were outstanding. The dolmades might be the best stuffed grape leaves I’ve come across. Not your typical filling of humdrum grains of bland rice but a toothsome flavorful package with a dab of lemon cream magic! Do not miss the eggplant spread, the flavors explode in your mouth. The snapper and the hanger steak were both very good but not truly inspired. The service was excellent, courteous and well timed. This was a great date night choice. Next time we’ll bring friends for some good table sharing!

We chose the tasting menu for 5. The mezze were out of this world-consistently textured dips and an array of tasty, traditional dishes. From the sea offerings were flavorful. The meat, however, was served in a trough-like dish that was heavy and unremarkable - didn’t include the highly touted chicken but 2 lambs and lots of pork chunks. Needs refinement. But all in all a very solid meal. Great ambience. A bit on the long side - three hours. Would definitely recommend dining-perhaps not the tasting menu.
