About this restaurant

  • Innovative
  • Romantic
  • Good for special occasions
Chef Mike Isabella opened Kapnos along the Fourteenth Street Corridor in July 2013. Isabella draws inspiration from Northern Greece to create a menu of spreads, breads, vegetables and other small plates, including his signature wood-grilled octopus. Two wood-fire grills with rotating spits and a large oven for stone-baked flat breads service the 160-seat restaurant. Guests enjoy carvings from whole animals that have been spit-roasted all day, including lamb, goat, duck, chicken, and suckling pig. Kapnos is open for dinner seven nights a week.

Great Christmas Eve dinner. The whole roast lamb shoulder is divine.

We were celebrating a birthday and so sampled a little bit from every section. Highlights were the various spreads, saganaki, broccoli with smoked eggplant (a must IMO), and octopus. Zucchini fritters were tasty and well-done, but I would probably get something else from the veggies instead, personally. The lamb was good, but a little underwhelming in comparison to the others. Should've gotten the goat! Our waitress (Maria) was fantastic and so helpful.

Recommended by our Lyft driver who is also a chef. Fantastic food. Got appetizer platter and roasted shishito peppers. Ended with fried calamari. All A+.

We were a group of 6 seasoned travelers and restaurant goers. We ordered a variety of dishes from the chicken to octopus, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, roasted eggplant and a caviar appetizer. Besides the chicken being brined a bit too much all parties enjoyed their dishes immensely.

The physical arrangement was such that the very noisy bar was isolated from our table, and we could enjoy great conversation. The food was creative and collaborative. We ordered the lamb-shoulder for the table, which was delicious and fun to share. Mezze were also delicious, and the greek wine recommended by the waiter was outstanding. Very enjoyable overall.

We had a wonderful experience at Kapnos. We had the unlimited brunch and everything we had was excellent. Our server David was extremely helpful, managed some strict dietary restrictions, and was sure to keep the food arriving at our table without us even asking. Highly recommend this restaurant for brunch!

One of the best brunch places in all of DC without a doubt. Very good courteous service, food is fast, and drinks are good. If you go, you have to get the haloumi cheese.
