Chef Mike Isabella opened Kapnos along the Fourteenth Street Corridor in July 2013. Isabella draws inspiration from Northern Greece to create a menu of spreads, breads, vegetables and other small plates, including his signature wood-grilled octopus. Two wood-fire grills with rotating spits and a large oven for stone-baked flat breads service the 160-seat restaurant. Guests enjoy carvings from whole animals that have been spit-roasted all day, including lamb, goat, duck, chicken, and suckling pig. Kapnos is open for dinner seven nights a week.

Kapnos Ratings and Reviews
I will definitely return to Kapnos! The food was really superb. I chose it initially because my friend is on a high-protein, low carb diet, and we both enjoy fish, so a Greek restaurant seemed ideal. And the menu here will work for vegans, meat lovers, and those avoiding either carbs or just gluten. But I enjoyed everything about the restaurant. We over-ordered (which our terrific server, Mark, told us we had) and with Kapnos’ generous portions, I have extra food for at least a full day. The eggplant mezze was really tasty with the right amount of smoke and nut-crunch textures. Both our garden mezze - broccoli and Brussels sprouts were excellent, particularly the sprouts. A half chicken with lemon potatoes was perfectly cooked and the branzino perhaps best of all. (As I said, we over-ordered.). I should not fail to mention that I started with the hot toddy with Cardamon and lemon, which was tasty and lovely on a cold night, although it was more of a warm than hot toddy and I wish it had been hotter. There are other intriguing sounding cocktails and a solid wine list that includes half bottles. The restaurant itself is warm wood with one of the two bars facing the kitchen area. It is a tad loud but we asked for and received a quieter than average table. The staff were all great - welcoming and helpful - from the hostess to the server to those who cleaned the table. I could well become a regular....
With an almost empty restaurant for brunch, the hostesses were very difficult in giving us a table we were comfortable with. They were not accommodating or too gracious about it.
The food is good, but nothing special. An average meal, like most DC restaurants.
Had 7:30 reservations, but was told (after asking) that the hostess “wasn’t sure” when we would get a table. We ended up waiting 5 minutes or so, not too bad. The server was very polite and we had a very good experience with him. We ordered drinks and 5 plates all at once. We got 2 plates before we got cocktails, which was less than ideal. The shrimp was over cooked and unremarkable. Salmon kabobs were amazing! So we’re wild mushroom phyllo pies. We overheard the table next to us remarking on the subpar service as well. It seemed more crowded than previous times I’d been, as in more tables packed in, and very noisy. The food is pretty good, but it’s not worth the mediocre service. No plans to return.
We loved the lamb chops (incredible) and the spreads. Two times our order was either misunderstood or misplaced. We accepted what was brought to the table, red wine instead of white, two spreads instead of three, we said nothing so as not to interrupt the flow of the meal on a busy night. Best for the waiter to confirm back. Nevertheless, we will come back again and ask for our order to be repeated for clarity. Very kind people working at the restaurant overall.
The food was fantastic. I found the staff very helpful and very willing to help you decide what to get. I thought everything in the menu was delicious. The fresh calamari on the special menu was outstanding, as was the pita bread with the dip trio and the mushroom phyllo pie. The lamb chops were incredible. Highly recommend.
This was our second Christmas Eve dining at Kapnos. We decided on having the tasting menu again and everything was fantastic.
Rikki was our server and she did an excellent job making us feel welcome.
Our first course was a selection of three spreads, followed by an appetizer platter with six selections. Everything was presented beautifully and expertly explained by the young man who brought out the food.
After the appetizer, we received our fish course, which consisted of shrimp with metaxa brandy sauce, and charred octopus. I am not a big fan of octopus, but this was delicious.
The fish was followed by our meat course. Lamb chops, baby goat, bifteki (ground meat with seasoning), and short ribs. Again, everything was fantastic.
For dessert, we were presented with a Buche de Noel, a traditional French dessert. It was served with a selection of Greek cookies.
I cannot say enough about our experience at Kapnos. I cannot recommend it any higher.
I think we will back next Christmas Eve.
Excellent authentic Greek food with a modern twist. The chef stuck to traditional recipes and style, using simple locally sourced ingredients to highlight the country's most essential flavors - lemon, oregano, parsley, mint, and olive oil. From the moment the diner enters the restaurant, they are greeted with the warmth, aromas, sights (a rotisserie filled with cuts of pork shoulder, lamb and whole chicken) and sounds found in the small tavernas that line the streets of central Athens (think Kolonaki, Monsteraki). As someone who is hard pressed to find a Greek restaurant that truly satisfies, I was beyond impressed with the food, atmosphere and experience at Kapnos.
Great dining experience. We left the dish selections to our server and he knocked it out of the park. He selected a variety of dishes and flavors that were a perfect balance of menu items we would have selected ourselves and those we would have never picked on our own. Excellent service - will definitely come back!
Party of 2 - Dinner - Amazing!!!! Started with Pikilia which is a sample of 3 spreads, We ordered the hummus, Tzatziki and the melitzanosalata (Smoked eggplant). We followed with the kolokithokeftedes (zuchini fritters), grilled baby broccoli, Dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), Spanikopita and finished with the Aegina Shrimp,. EVERYTHING was Superb. Service was very good, nice atmosphere, Hip, and not too loud. This is my new "go to" for Greek food. "All in" including 2 glasses of wine and tip $135.00
The portions were very generous for tapas. Food was all great. Too much dill for my taste, but that's personal preference. If you're a Top Chef fan, it was fun seeing George Pagonis' smiling face behind the line. The water people are a bit aggressive, but that's part of the dining experience I guess.
The restaurant is beautiful and not loud. We were able to have a good conversation and not feel like we were shouting.
We frequently use Kapnos as a go-to place when we want to catch up with old friends. The location is great, and the food is excellent. The normal drawback is that it can be noisy. When we went on Tuesday night we had an excellent, quiet table, making it easy to catch up with people we hadn't seen for months. Food was great as always, and the ease of conversation made the evening a hit!
Overall this is a very good restaurant. Service was exemplary, particularly in that the series of small plates we ordered came out in a logical sequence, not all at once, and in a manner that we never felt rushed. With one exception, everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. The one exception was the grilled lamb, which was too stringy and greasy. We definitely will dine here again, but next time we will order the lamb chops, which looked wonderful as they passed by on the way to other tables.
