Was staying at The Hotel at UMD recently and as this restaurant is attached to the hotel decided to dine here. The staff was extremely friendly and the food really blew me away honestly. I've ate at a lot of tapas/small plate spots and this one is truly fantastic. I rounded it all up with the coconut sorbet which was out of this world.
I had a drink at the hotel lobby bar that was wonderful while I waited for friends. I highly recommend that. Every one of the mezza was wonderful and we all enjoyed them. The waiter and other staff were attentive and provided good service. The mezza come out as they are ready so that made it possible to manage table space. We would definitely go back again!
Great food. Only complaint is the timing of the delivery of the entrees. Waited almost 10 minutes for second two. Well, one other complaint, the seats are uncomfortable. Need cushions. But still well worth going for the food.
The food was great, the service was great, the staff was great. The location was great. Ample outdoor seating! The parking was ABSURD! Ridiculously expensive WITH validation!!! ABSURD. $28 & $14 per vehicle after outstanding food and service. This would have been 100% outstanding review if not for parking!
Please have Happy Hour for the whole Bar area, like most restaurants. It's hard for the over 50 crowd to sit at the high top tables and bar. You would have an increase in customers for sure. Although the Gyro was excellent, especially the lamb, I would have tried other dishes. The small dishes, appetizers, were expensive. You would end up spending at LEAST $20 per person if you ordered 2 plates on the menu. The waiters suggestion was,..."I would first order 2 of the starters per person", this would not fill most adults. Also, the dips should come with more than one piece of bread.
General consensus in the Historic town of Hyattsville, where we have lived for 35 years, its a nice restaurant, tasty food, but a bit pricey and stingey.
Please take this as constructive criticism, we want you business to "make it".
We started with a house margarita and a blueberry margarita as well as the bread and selected two different spreads. They were each unique but both very good. We then each had a kabob - one beef and one ground beef & lamb. The grilled beef was very good, the ground beef and lamb was OK. We shared the lemon tart with basil ice cream and that was fantastic. The restaurant is all hard surfaces so the noise level could be very high at times. There seemed to be an attempt to counter the noise with the pumped in music, which did not work. The noise level was the only negative. Service was excellent.
So so. Much better in past visits. Speed of service was poor. Food seemed to be dry. Waitress decided when we were finished with our brunch, no us.
Kapnos Taverna definitely elevates the dining choices in College Park. We were there for lunch on a weekday— and we liked it so much I’m sure we will be back. It was a beautiful summer day so we sat outside on the patio. We ordered six small plates and it was just the right amount for three. It was all delicious, each bite full of flavor and texture. The lamb kebab was full of smoky grill flavor. The shrimp came with orzo, in a lightly spiced and delicious sauce. The server recommended the zucchini patties which were definitely a few steps above similar ones you find elsewhere. The surprise of the meal was the cauliflower— we were trying to figure out the recipe to make them at home. Everything we had was superb.
Wonderful meal with friends. Will definitely do it again.
Everyone was friendly! The honey wings were delicious but the spartan burger was a little dry.
I would give the place another chance. I think i just ordered the wrong thing.
Go back to the original recipe for the pork shoulder and the Greek potatoes
While the food was really good, the poor service made the whole experience just ok.
Great! Fantastic lamb, wonderful service!
Loved the place. There was a birthday party going on, so nice ambience in the bar. We were in a booth nearby. Good food and fine choice although some of the tapas were different from what I remembered from a previous visit. Go for the vegetarian mezzes!
I had the beef souvlaki gyros. they were amazing.
Chosen by my son to celebrate his graduation from the University of Maryland, College Park. made reservations way in advance, as he likes this restaurant a lot. We were seated at a table with high chairs (which I didn't request), which was a bit awkward for my elderly parents and not as comfortable for everyone. We were also seated next to an incredibly large (15+) party that was very noisy, so it was hard to hear our own conversations, which made it uncomfortable. Wet floor made my mom fall down on her way to the restroom. Then there was the whole cake thing; I brought in an outside cake - and had already been advised about the $3/person cake cutting fee; waiter had to re-explain it to me and then it just seemed to take a long time for the cake to be brought out and eventually served (it seemed our waiter got caught up taking orders from another table). The food was good - but my first time eating dinner at this restaurant I was more impressed by the food than this time around at lunch.
Dined here in celebration of my Partner’s Doctoral graduation. The service was attentive, yet appropriately interjected between conversations. The food was fantastic and the menu allowed us to share items, as well as indulge in a few individual tastes. Bravo to the staff!
I made this reservation for my son, a friend, and his Godmother while I participated in graduation. I have had many meals at Kapnos and thought it would be a good place for them to have brunch as none had eaten there previously. When I asked about the experience, they indicated that they were seated next to a very noisy table of patrons; that the service from their server was horrible--she was inexperienced, slow, got the orders wrong (son has nut allergy, the allergy was made clear and orders were placed WITHOUT nuts but brought to the table covered with nuts), etc. The food was described as "lovely" but I was saddened that the overall experience was so poor and, quite frankly, dangerous. NUT allergies can kill. Apologize profusely for getting it WRONG.
This was our first visit. But we will be back. The food was spectacular and ambiance really nice. It all made our graduation celebration even more enjoyable. Loved it!!
We went here after a graduation and had a great time. The food was delicious and the service was eccellent!
Pre-graduation dinner. Everything was delicious.
The waitress was opposed to us not sharing the small plates which made it more difficult than it needed to be for our group of 12. Otherwise we had a great time and the food is excellent. I will definitely be back and would recommend it to others.
The portions were small for dinner. The food was good but not enough for dinner.
Food was pretty good, but portions are small, especially for the price. Ordered a 3 dip appetizer sampler ($21) to share. It came with 1 piece of pita bread and some cucumber spears. Asked for more bread and was charged $2 for an additional piece of pita bread. Entrees and vegetable sides were good. Server forgot one of the vegetable sides we ordered. There is no kids menu, but the restaurant did make their burger and fries option plain for my 6 year old. However, they had no ketchup. My husband walked next door to another restaurant within the hotel and asked if they could provide some ketchup (which they did).
Slow service. You definitely have to order 3 courses in order to leave full
This was my second visit for brunch, this time Mother's Day. We had to wait a few minutes past our reservation time due to the number of families but were able to sit at the bar and start our meal with beverages. The manager "comped" us a starter platter if various dips and pita bread, even though it would have been included as part of all u can eat brunch. Nice gesture, but it increased my automatic 20% gratuity. My only complaint other then some of the dishes were a little slow due to # of diners. The wait was worth every dish and our server kept the food coming as long as we were hungry! Even had some to take home! I am not generally a mimosa person but there's are great! Pineapple! Just wish there was an option to not get the unlimited mimosa option. Cant drink more then 2...my family was skeptical of a greek menu, lets say we prefer "soul food" but even the pickiest were satisfied! I can eat the lamb, french toast and waffles all day!
I will be returning!
food that I would not prepare at home. nice service and parking.
We enjoyed the unlimited brunch. Great selection. Really good food. Good service. We shall return.
Located in the new hotel in College Park, this is one of the only restaurants near campus that features quality dining suited for visiting parents to take their college student children out for a meal. There is a modern ambience to the place. The mezze is tasty and artfully plated. Portions were surprisingly filling. The service for the most part was friendly, although our waiter disappeared when it was time to pay up.
First time visiting Kapnos Taverna. The entire family wasn’t sold on Greek food but by the end, everyone enjoyed their meal. Started with an order of Tzatziki for the table - it was a hit, just needed more flatbread than what was served with it and disappointed to see an extra $3.00 charge on our bill for the extra flatbread. The star of the night was the Saganaki - everybody really enjoyed this. The Dolmades was the only dish that we really didn’t like, but everything else was good, including the lamb and spit-fire chicken. Everything is served family style, which made it easy to try different dishes. One last thing - the ginger lemonade was very fresh and tasty.
The food was an interesting take on Greek food, however, the cost was exorbitant. Unless you're on an expense account or have money to burn, try a less expensive option. Really not enough money for the price.
This was our second time here. The food was even better that the first time!. The bar service is very slow- well into eating appetizers before drinks came. The timing of the food was a bit off which feels awkward for a group. Leaving someone waiting for their dinner is not a good thing. Timing is key. Manager could have handled it better by not being defensive. Over all had a good meal.
Great place. Great food.
It was our first time, and we enjoyed the variety and novelty compared with nearby offerings (in College Park). It had a relaxed atmosphere, and most patrons seemed to be casually dressed. It was very full, so a little on the noisy side. Even though full, service was attentive. All of our selections were very good. We look forward to trying others next time.
Our server Brandt was excellent.
Excellent food and great service! Highly recommend it and will definitely be returning on our next visit to College Park.
Good food, good service. Portion sized to share. Will be back.
Everything was GREAT! The food was soooo good and we definitely plan on returning.
