Service was good. We had asked for a to go box for our lamb, which the water took the lamb away to box and it never came back.
I went here for restuarant week, and i enjoyed it. Part of hte reason was that our waiters was very pleasant, and even gave us the hummus appetizer on the house. The hummus actually ended up being very tasty, the dolmas were probably the highlight for me. Authentic dolmas, homemade and not canned with a tangy zingy flavor. It's good! We also ordered the spit roast lamb with the quinoa side salad. Also tasty and has a strong lamb flavor. The only reason I gave it four stars was because of dessert; the chocolate cake with ice cream and the baklava were nothing spectacular, very regular.
Our expectations for dinner at Kapnos may have been too high. We had a perfectly fine meal with great service, but the experience didn't wow us. The waiter did a great job picking a wine for us that went well with our lamb. Otherwise, it gets a "meh" review.
I’ve been many times before, quality is still great and the menu favorites continue to impress.
Service was terrible. Went for a late Saturday brunch at 2:30 pm with a friend. We ordered the $35 all you can eat brunch and the waitress only brought half the food that we ordered. We each had two or three of the nearly eight small plates we ordered. The food we did receive was very underwhelming. Probably won't be returning or recommending to anyone. And mimosas were basically just orange juice.
I've been to Kapnos before and LOVED it. This experience was vastly different. Our service was awful - for example, I had to ask three times for coffee alone. Granted, they may or may not have been short staffed, so I'll give a little break there. What I have a hard time with is that all of the food we ordered was overcooked, some even burned and when we told our server, there was no attempt to try and get a new dish. The comment was simply taken and our server left. I was really upset to have paid as much as we did and not really taken advantage of the full brunch options because the food was consistently bad. I'll give this place one more chance because our first time there was so good, but I'm hesitant.
Great food, casual atmosphere. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an imaginative and healthy meal.
Overall really was a good meal. However we ordered way too much food, to the point where the waiter really should have said something. Instead he encouraged us to run up the bill. (Note: I’m not talking about just another app, but the “for the table” portions.) by the time the whole lamb shoulder came out, everyone looked at it with dread.
Really good food, a little pricey
We’ve eaten here many times and loved it. More recently the food has seemed more Americanized with much larger portions and less Mediterranean than in recent memory. We ordered the pulled pork and regretted it as we could not eat it. It was very fatty and swimming on a bed of salad and dressing. When we told the waiter he told us to ask for him next time and he would give us a free dessert. I doubt there will be a next time. The quality of the food has gone down and I would expect our waiter to try to make amends while we are there instead of “the next time.”
The food was fantastic! Speaking as a pescatarian, lots of options and absolutely delicious. Special shout out to our sever, Olecia, for her attentiveness & suggestions!
Food was inedible, wine was corked, plates never cleared. This place is done, unfortunately. It was one of my favorites for years.
This is one of 3 Mike Isabella's restaurants in the building next to the Ballston Mall currently under reconstruction. They share a kitchen, but the food is different. Be aware that there is no dedicated parking, so you need to be strategic in finding a spot.
The waiter advised us that most people order 2 items from the menu, since these are "mezze"--the Mediterranean equivalent of tapas. We started with a shared Melitzanosalat--smoky eggplant, roasted peppers, walnuts, and feta spread eaten with a soft flatbread--really tasty. We also shared fried zucchini patties, grilled octopus, 2 lamb chops, and spit-roasted lamb. Until the lamb, everything was great. I like my lamb rare and juicy and the two entrees were anything but. Although you can't get rare spit-roasted lamb, a lot of the meat was dry and tough. The chops were ok, but nothing special and we weren't asked how we wanted them cooked.
If we go again, I would probably stick with the mezze which were excellent and wine.
Met my friend for brunch, first-time visit. Had to park in a garage, no street available. The food was fantastic, but the $35 all-you-can-eat option is the most economical. For example, the spit chicken and waffles gives you 1/4 waffle triangle and one chicken part (wing, thigh, or leg) on a coffee saucer sized plate for $15. Mimosas are $9 and it does not include the raw bar. However, the all you can eat serves mimosas for $0.25 ea. and the raw bar is included. Value would have been 5 stars if a la carte prices were lower. Our total for greek coffees, several mimosa refills, and 8 servings came to $85 whereas it would have been over $130 had we chosen a la carte. The service and food were excellent, easy to see how they earned a top rating for D.C. brunch.
Excellent foods! The seafood linguine was perfect. The salmon was super tasty!
The octopus entree was delicious as were the taramasalata and the eggplant dip. The crispy eggplant was not crispy and was a small portion.
I really like the atmosphere of the restaurant--a good, busy vibe for brunch. Our waiter was very friendly but didn't know what many of the greek items on the menu were, so we had to google them. Drinks were very good. One in our party had the baked eggs with lamb, the lamb was amazing. 2 of us had breakfast gyros, which were very average. Would definitely give it another shot but would not order the same thing.
Our favorite brunch. Vast array of unusual, creative delicious plates.
Order any items on the menu. Taste, share indulge. Generally Mediterranean influnced fare. We sampled a dozen spreads and small plates. Every one was a hit.
I LOVED the food here! Service was so so (had to flag down wait staff for drinks, water refills) and the noise level (really loud with some unnecessary music being played in the background) detracted from the overall experience.
We recently celebrated a family birthday at Kapnos Taverna and were delighted with the food and service. We felt the price was right, especially compared to some other tapas/mezze restaurants in the area. We enjoyed sitting above and watching the kitchen, too. Will definitely be back to try some cocktails or brunch!
We always have great time here. Have introduced it to couple of friends and they all love this place as well.
This is a great place to go with friends and share some delicious Greek food. I especially recommend the flat bread and dips, mixed grill, and watermelon salad. All was great though, and it’s a lively, hip environment. Will definitely be back.
Disappointing since I've been to Kapnos in DC (outstanding!) as well as Kapnos Kouzina which is very good, also. It was not bad, but there was nothing to bring me back.
The salmon was exquisitely prepared.
The hummus had great flavor and was very fresh and light
The coffee donuts and cinnamon ice cream didn’t sound exciting whatsoever but were GREAT!
The fried cheese with black pepper honey was the perfect balance of salty and sweet.
Kapnos Taverna gets better and better - the food and service were outstanding,
and it is always so convivial and fun!
I had a bit of a wait for my lunch companion, and enjoyed a comfortable booth, nice Greek wine, and a trio of dips w/ warm pita bread before her arrival. Service was prompt & thoughtful - the female bartender providing support for a busy waiter. Her recommendations were spot-on: the lamb chops & roasted potatoes, a couscous salad & an exceptional lemon cake dessert. Parking in the area is ever-challenging, but Kapnos is worth the quest.
I've been here twice. This time for Sunday brunch. The plates for bruch are a little bigger than the usual small plates but if you were going to order more than one plate, probably best to go with the all you can eat. However, everyone at the table has to do that. The food is great. The service was a little spotty but we had arrived just as they opened so I think they were just getting the morning routine together. Great selection of food and there's a great wine list. I'll definitely be back.
Great time at Kapnos as an Arlington spot to dine! Loved the pita and variety of spreads! So delicious! We both had lovely salads - I probably could have stopped there. We then ordered the lamb and braised beef - both very nice options. We will be back!
Kapnos Taverna is a great tapas restaurant with fun food options and a cool environment. I easily made a reservation on Opentable. Opentable gives you the option of a high-top or standard seating but I don't believe the hostess gets that information since she didn't seem to know. We started at the bar since they have Happy Hour everyday. The drinks are great and the small bites were an appropriate warm-up to dinner. The unique dinner options were delicious and the atmosphere is awesome. The service was really quick and polite but our primary waitress wasn't really seen much after we chose to stick with water. Still a great experience and I would highly recommend for a date night or just fun dinner experience. Photos are: melitzanosalata, makaronia, marinated beef souvlaki and crispy squash blossoms
We were a group of 9 adults and one toddler, celebrating a birthday. I chose to pre-order our food so that we could be seated and food would be ready, without our having to group-decide on dishes to share. Everyone I worked with was terrific. We were seated upstairs, where we could easily talk and not worry about the toddler bothering other diners. Jovan, our server, was very attentive, and served the food beautifully. Never felt rushed. Everything was delicious! We had a lovely time. I highly recommend this restaurant for a fun celebration.
This was a return experience for us. We’ve been to Kapnos several times and will continue to patronize it
We did the prefix dinner menu. The options were great and the food was even better. This option also allowed for half off bottles of wine. A perfect option for a date night!
The waiter was very welcoming and helpful. When I asked about an octopus salad he said he didn't recommend it. I was disappointed and he asked if he could see if the chef would grill the octopus, promising I'd love it. The chef agreed and it was as good as I had in Greece if not better. He was terrific always pointing us in the right direction. Had a great, relaxing time, never feeling rushed. Will be back
Great menu. Great waiter very friendly, helpful with just the right amount of checking in. Sat on the second floor overlooking the main floor and bar which was nice for a Saturday evening dinner. Food came out in a timely manner. Food was delicious loved everything we ate. Wine was very good and compliment to our spicier dishes. Highly recommended.
Delicious but the portions were small and expensive.
Excellent food, service, and overall a really pleasant, tasty lunch! Looking forward to going back for dinner.
Excellent service and an even better meal! First time visit and will certainly return. Tasting menu and Greek wine special was an unbelievable deal.
Absolutely fabulous food, drink and service. Always. LOVE Kapnos
Lamb gyros, falafel gyros, hummous, baba ganoush we’re all quite delicious. I would order the same again.
go there fairly often, always enjoy: outstanding contemporary-style greek tapas, attractive room, attentive service.
