Kapnos Kouzina Ratings and Reviews
Kapnos Kouzina consistently overdelivers. We came in this weekend — a girls night party of 5 — for an early group dinner and had a wonderful experience.
At first, the service was a little slow. I think we waited like 20-25 minutes just for our drinks? But after that, things picked up and everything was delicious. Our waiter was extremely careful to consider the gluten allergy of a member of our party, going so far as to make sure the pita and hummus were served separately and getting her an allergy-explicit menu. The drinks were excellent, as always. I love, love, love, the Ya Kilt It. And our food was fresh, flavorful, and filling.
Can't wait to go back!
My spouse and I made a reservation for dinner and arrived on time. However, we had to wait for about 15 minutes until we were seated.
The restaurant was full and busy, and the noise level was beyond simple conversation: you had to yell in order to be heard on the other side of the table, and it seems like everyone was yelling at the same time.
The appetizer we ordered (smoked eggplant) arrived quickly and was tasty. After about 20 minutes waiting, we received the beef souvlaki I ordered. My spouse had ordered chicken souvlaki and received it, together with the cocktail we ordered with the appetizer, about 15 minutes after I was done with my own plate. The souvlakis were overall OK. Both plates contained one small skewer of meat, which is less than what I would expect for a $17 main course, even in downtown Bethesda, even in a Mike Isabella restaurant.
We didn't stay for desserts.
Unfortunately we booked during Restaurant Week. And we were told we both had to order from the special menu or both from the regular menu. We were told the bar area did not serve food, but it does. We asked for a window, were told it was reserved for parties of 4 or more, and then watched two parties of 2 get seated. The food was okay, but overpriced for the size of portions. I know it is mezza style, but you should not have to order $50 worth of food each to feel satisfied. So, not high on our list to return to.
We have been here before and have always enjoyed our meals. We were looking forward to our dinner date but were very disappointed this time. We were rushed, dishes came out of the kitchen out of sequence, no one asked us if things were ok, our waiter was a bit surly when we ordered our food but hadn’t yet chosen drinks (he wanted us to order fast). The food was tasty but we had to gobble down our food much more quickly than we should have. People kept grabbing our dishes to take them away before we were finished and asked if they could just wrap up our food. My husband actually felt ill later that night as a result. He is reluctant to return to what had been one of our favorite places.
We have been to its sister restaurant, Kapnos, in DC and wanted to give this one a try too. Kapnos Kouzina has a little different focus in terms of its food, but the variety and quality were excellent. This is not a nice quiet restaurant that you can have a cozy romantic dinner at, but it is great to explore different styles of common greek foods and some excellent fried chicken and lamb.
It was exceptionally busy when we went and for stretches the service was less than you would want, but overall everything was great. The quality and tastes that were offered in their food are worth having to wait for a waiter to come by to get you more drinks or clear a plate or two.
Overall I would highly recommend this to anyone that likes to try lots of things over the course of a dinner. We picked our own food (they have a chef's fixed price option) and were glad we did. The table next to chose that option and they missed out on some amazing things we tried.
I would not recommend this place to anyone--we were not accomodated for our reservation, frequently told it would be 5 minutes---finally a table magically appeared as we, with coats on, went past the hostess to leave---no recognition that 1 of us was disabled and we were led directly to stairs-----------a bad experience
The service was great! This was a dinner with a girlfriend and we just ended up overstaying. We were asked to move because there were reservations after us. The manager gave us a complimentary drink (Prosecco) which we thought was very thoughtful.
The food selection was good- could be better though. The charred octopus was a bit dry.
We went for brunch and did the bottomless menu. With five of us, they brought out almost all the dishes and then asked what else we wanted from the unlimited food menu. The waiter was very nice, although there were a few times that our mimosas were empty. Food was great, and I would definitely go back!
I was last at Kapnos over the summer and the food quality and nervier was excellent. This time the service was fine but the food fell wasn’t as good. I had grilled chicken kabob on flatbread and the chicken was over cooked and dry and the bread was not as fresh as it cracked when folded.
We are big fans of Kapnos Kouzina. All of our previous dining experiences there have been wonderful. This time, the food was as superb as ever, but the rest of the experience was awful, almost comically so.
When we arrived, we asked for a table by the window and were told they were all taken. We were surprised because no one was seated at 6 tables and we had a reservation (4 of the tables were still empty when we left). Instead we were seated at a table that was in the back of the restaurant, next to the kitchen. Had it been an open kitchen this would have been entertaining, It was not. The table had a very strong draft and was so cold that we had to wear coats. When we moved to another table, it was even colder. Both tables were in the path of the outside door on a 20 degree day and cold air was blowing through the vents directly onto the tables.
As I said, the foot was superb, with a special call out to the lamp chops. One minor burp was that the hot tea had no tea in it -- just hot water.
While we love the food, I am not sure we will go back if we have a similar experience getting tables. It made things very uncomfortable, it took the attention off the food and conversation and onto how cold we were and what we might do to get warmer. We left sooner than we normally would have.
Kapnos Kouzina, please take a look at the full dining experience you are providing.
We loved the delicious mezze, especially the sampler of spreads and the Falafel. We also liked the lamb shoulder and salmon kebab. The good was very good, as it is at Kapnos DC. Unlike Kapnos DC, the air temperature was warm and comfortable and it was quiet. We ate very early, at 5:15, so it might be noisy later.
The only reason that service rating is not higher is that we are annoyed about the response from the person who seated us. We had a reservation for 3 and we were seated in the corner by a service or office entrance. We passed another open table also along the window but more in the center of the room across from the bar. We were told that was reserved for a larger party even though it was also a table for 4. We arrived at 5:15 and left at 6:45pm. A party of 4 was finally seated at that table as we were exiting but for the entire 1.5 hours we were there it was empty and available. Service by waiter and other staff was quite good so no other complaints about service.
This was our second time at this restaurant, and it was very busy as usual (Friday night). Three of us sat at the bar and ordered several drinks and small plates. The food was very good, but we did have to ask a couple times for a second drink, dessert, etc. I don't think they have enough bartenders to take care of the bar service and the drink service from the restaurant. They were very nice, very busy and (I think) needed 1-2 more people behind the bar. Overall I would recommend for the food, location, value and ambiance. We will definitely go there again - in fact this may be our new favorite place for pre-and post-movie eats! They have happy hour every night!
We chose the chef’s tasting menu since this was our first time there. Some of the selections were great and others weren’t to our liking as much. Every course was presented with descriptions that were too quick and often inaudible. We felt we didn’t get to have a proper rapport with the gentlemen serving the courses because it was a different person every time. Comparatively Zaytinya, another Mike Isabella restaurant, has much better service and selections.
I am not a big fan of Meze or Tapas restaurants. I always leave the restaurant with empty stomach. Overall food was prepared well, tasty and great service. it is expensive dinner since you order tons of mezes for dinner. Lunch and Brunch options are better than dinner options. Like to ambiance very much. Service was excellent.
