Kanpai - Third Ward
Delicious food with impressive creative maki. Unfortunate super slow service. Took 2 hours to eat here and server didn’t seem to think it was an issue
We had a nice waiter. Food is great as always. The boss is my favorite.
Food (for a party of 2) took more than one hour to be delivered to our table when the restaurant was about 25% full. When it arrived, it was below average quality. When we complained, the server apologized but no word from the manager and we were charged for the total bill. Do NOT waste your time and money here.
I think this is consistently the best sashimi/sushi restaurant in Milwaukee. Fish is always really fresh and prepared with care. Great selection and cooked dishes are excellent as well. Great sake list. highly recommend this if you want great Japanese
The restaurant is roomy. We had a very private booth. The server was so patient answering all of our questions and granting all of our requests. The food was delicious and reasonably priced.
They have awesome lunch specials and the food is always very good. However, despite the fact that they are rarely busy at lunchtime, the service is always rather slow. Not sure if that's an issue with the wait staff or the cooks.
The atmosphere is incredibly nice and welcoming. The staff were attentive and all friendly answering any questions you may have, or finding someone that could. The food is well portioned and priced for what is served. The presentation is a bonus and well worth a visit!
We had a wonderful meal with great service! We will definitely return🙂
understaffed, extremely long waits for service, food cold (but didn't want to complain because it would have been another hour)
Kampi does not serve traditional Japanese food. So, as a Japanese restaurant, I give it zero stars. Instead, the restaurant offers Korean inspired Japanese dishes, which were decent and the sushi rolls were good Korean maki, which are cut thin with rice that is very dense and compressed. The menu also has some traditional Korean dishes, which I did not try. I enjoy eating Korean maki when I am expecting to eat them. Not when I order Japanese food.
Great restaurant. Great service. Amazing food.
Best Sushi option in MKE since that sad day when Izumi’s closed. Kanpai offers a wide selection of nigiri and maki, lovingly prepared and artfully presented. Perhaps most importantly, Kanpai understand that unless the rice (“Sushi” means “vinegared rice”) is PERFECT, nothing else matters. And, I’m happy to report, the rice was perfect. We plan to return on a regular basis. Also, never saw Surf Clam presented like this before:
Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu. By far the best sushi in Milwaukee
We arrived at this Third Ward restaurant in Milwaukee with relatively low expectations. We had tried a few other Sushi restaurants in Milwaukee and had not found them to be great. Kanpai, although quiet when we arrived at 1800 on a friday night, had its chefs making fresh food and his servers ready to provide service to all guests. We ordered green tea, edamame and Maki rolls. Our server was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and most of all friendly. The rolls were amazing! We will certainly revisit this restaurant in the near future. Thank you for your great service, your amazing food and your ambiance.
Emily was helping us, giving suggestions and recommendations. The food and drinks were amazing as always!
The food was very good however, my mojitos didn’t seem very strong.
We had a great time. The waiter helped me out while I patiently waited a long time for my date. Shout out to the guy with the black swan tattoo.
Amazing food and sake selection! Fish was very fresh and the presentation of food was beautiful. Our server was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. I will definitely come back!
Upon walking up to the front door my teenage son declared that it looked dirty and wondered if anyone ever cleaned the windows...he thought actually it might be closed...and after dining here, I suggest perhaps that would be a better option than continuing to masquerade as a restaurant. The staff was totally inept and dirty from fingernails to hair, aprons were filthy, clothes shabby. I declined a refill on my water because I would rather remain thirsty than have him touch my glass. There was sticky goo, dust and and crumbs lining the surfaces of the table and spatterings on walls. The staff had zero service skills and never picked up an empty bottle or dirty plate. When the the food arrived my boyfriend asked if it was Bring Your Kid To Work Day. There was more attention to bizarre lemon shapes and gross poorly crafted decorations than the food itself. The fish was not fresh, and the yakisoba looked like a bowl of chaotic slop. When I woke up today I was just grateful for making it through the night. I've worked in the service industry for 30 years and managed two restaurants. It's not like me to write bad reviews but I'd be remiss if I didn't share this with others who might recall how great Kanpai once was, and how much it has degraded. We can't get our money back but at least we have our health- please save both of yours!
Service took forever for our group of 6. Food was just OK for the price.
Waited forever for server to come to table. Service was slow and bad. There over 1 hour and 15 minutes, drinks only refilled once. Food was expensive and mediocre. Will never go back.
In my life of many thousands of dining experiences, as well as having managed restaurants for 15+ years in my youth, I have not had a worse service experience as the one I had at Kanpai - Third Ward. This is also the first seriously poor review I ever wrote.
My wife and I arrived at 7:40 to a half full restaurant and ordered 2 glasses of wine and our dinners within the first 10 minutes. First, it was obvious our table attendant was either new or poorly trained as she brought out both bottles of wine, already opened, and two empty glasses thinking we each wanted a our own bottle. This made no sense for a number of reasons, especially since the bottles were pre-opened and one already had wine missing.
By 8:40, almost an hour after we were seated and having only received the wine and a bowl of soup, I approached the hostess who said she would immediately speak with our table attendant. After another 15 minutes of seeing plate after plate of food leaving the kitchen, and none of it for us, I stopped the hostess and asked that I speak to the manager on duty. A gentleman came from the kitchen, covered with food, to our table and offered us free appetizers! Are you kidding? If we wanted appetizers I would have ordered them. We wanted our Nigiri and specialty roll that we ordered an hour and 15 minutes ago.
About 5 minutes later our Nigiri came out, without our specialty roll, and a presentation I would expect from my local grocery store. About 10 minutes later, our roll arrived with a similar presentation, and not made with the additional tempura flakes I requested. Our table attendant apologized and said she would adjust the bill by 15% (Really? Wow!) . For some reason our bill was only adjusted 12% before taxes. As all we wanted to do at that point was leave we did, and never to return.
Lesson to be learned on a $100 meal for two people: If you screw up just admit to it and take care of your customer so they don't write reviews like this.
The waiters were extremely rude.
The usher got highly disturbed when we told her that we couldn’t sit on the floor( Japanese style) as my Mom can’t sit on the floor and my son in crutches.
Would not go back again.
Other patrons sitting next to our table were talking and laughing loudly maybe under the influence of alcohol, no respect for others in the restaurant.
We had a wonderful time at Kanpai! The food was great and our server was helpful in answering our questions.
This is truly the only real Japanese resturant in downtown Milwaukee that i am aware off. Went with some friends from Singapore (they know their Sushi) and they were very satisfied.. so food is 5 star. The ambiance is a bit tired and 3 star though. The sake selection was great and our server was fantastic.
Service was awful- we waited over an hour for our food
Food was great, the atmosphere was very welcoming and peaceful! Service was fast and accommodating
Fabulous sushi and variety in menu all in the 3rd Ward.
We had an amazing meal with great service! I would highly recommend this place😋
Went for DownTown Dining . . . Food was good and plentiful (got a "box" for leftovers). Service was quick and attentive. Atmosphere was conducive to good conversation during the meal.
The food, service and overall restaurant ambiance was outstanding. The menu offered something for everyone's taste. We enjoyed lunch during Downtown Dining Week and were completely impressed with our experience.
Our reservation was for 8:15. We arrived early and were seated at 8:10. We then sat there for 15 min with no acknowledgement from servers. I went to hostess and asked if there was an error. One server brought us water and said someone would be with us we waited another 6 min- no one came to speak with us. We got up and left.
Went to kanpai with my wife and kids on Saturday night
After finishing a bowl of miso soup, my son found a hair in the bottom of the bowl.
The food tasted good, but the service was atrocious.
We would never go back there. As an aside, a couple who came in after us left after telling the hostess how disappointed they were with the service.
First time visiting during downtown dining week. It was easy to find, and parking was available right in front of restaurant. I ordered off the regular menu instead of downtown dining weeks menu and the food was very tasty, drinks were good too. I would definitely recommend
For some reason the reservation I made on Open Table did not appear on their screen. Since we were very early, it wasn’t an issue.
A moderate to upper priced Japanese restaurant should have the expectation of appearing clean, staff well dressed and the meals being well plated. The restaurant needs a face lift. It is getting old and looking dirty. Granted it is difficult to fill open positions in any industry, the staff should appear as professional as possible. While some better than average flavors are served, the plating does matter. As a sushi bar only, would give it a higher rating, but as a restaurant it is place that you leave not necessarily disappointed, but not looking forward to returning considering other close by options.
The food was good but the service was terrible. Anything made in the kitchen came out within 10-15 minutes but those who ordered sushi had to wait for over an hour. Therefore some of our party was done eating and ready to leave before others even got their food. The management didn't acknowledge the issue until we brought it to their attention.
I you decide to go, I'd ask what the wait time is for any of the sushi items so you are not disappointed like we were. Its a shame cause the food was really tasty.
Took forever for our sushi. Barely saw our waiter. Won’t be back
A little pricey but outstanding food, generous serving sizes of sashimi and the sushi rolls are large and amazing too
Fantastic service & food. We will be back
