Big fan of Kanpai, been there many, many times and consider it my favorite Milwaukee Sushi option. Three issues on this visit, though: (1) In the Chef's Selection Nigiri had several duplicated items (Sake, Hamachi at least). With so many possibilities, why not have 9 different fish in the Nigiri sampler? (2) The Hokkagai (surf clam) was beautifully presented and delicious, but had a LOT of sand or grit (3) The Unagi was absolutely drenched in a sweet sauce. I've had Unagi in many restaurants around the country, and have never seen it prepared like this before. It's delicious--give it a light glaze and put the bottle away, PLEASE!

Our reservation here was amazing! The food was really good and it was worth the price as the portions exceeded our expectations. The private room was also really nice and I'd really recommend for big parties as well.

The interior design is Japanese elegant, the menu simultaneously maintains tradition while embracing creativity - all dishes were fresh and precisely prepared. Overall excellent nouveau Japanese dining experience!

Delicious sushi rolls!

Out of items on the menu for Saturday night is not a good sign

The sushi is passable to very good but not exceptional. We asked to sit at the sushi bar and were told that they were not seating people there. We requested omakese service — where the sushi chef selects a menu based on what he/she feels is the best selection of available ingredients and we were told that the chef does not make recommendations. Service started off attentive in a near empty restaurant (3 active tables) but one drink was forgotten and all of sushi came at the same time. Employees were standing around talking to each other throughout our meal but it took only a hand-wave to get our water topped off and to get a check at the end. With adequate sushi, a disengaged sushi chef, closed sushi bar area and a staff that is distracted by their own interactions, three stars hang on the quality of fish and decent sushi craft.

Always really high quality fish. Preparation excellent as is the presentation. Sat at a high top this visit. Much noisier than the general seating areas. If you are making a reservation and want to be at a regular table, you need to specify this.

Always love the food here! The signature sushi rolls are all great along with the appetizers. One thing that I’ve noticed the last few times I’ve been there is that there’s always a couple nats flying around. Kind of grossed me out while I’m eating, hope they don’t have them by the kitchen area.

The spicy chicken was spicy and delicious. They even made us fresh wasabi for the sushi we ordered. Everything was very tasty. Good experience.

My family and I had yet another wonderful dining experience at Kanpai. The food was delicious, the service was professional, and the ambiance was cozy and fun.

Great food and great atmosphere! Parking garage right next to restaurant which was a plus. The Hawaiian Volcano was exceptional. We will come back again when in Milwaukee.

I would not recommend - this is the TJ max of sushi. I have had way better.

Christmas Eve, most everything closed so Kanpai was at capacity. Food was great, service a bit harried but friendly. Would definitely go again.

Our two rolls took almost an hour to come out. When we asked to see the manager, one of the servers told us they weren’t sure a manager could come out to see us. When the manager finally came out, he blamed our waitress on not putting the order in until 10 minutes prior to us saying something.
The sushi is delicious however, and the stuffed avocado appetizer was very good.

Haven't been here in a while. Probably won't be back soon. Food was creative, though some flavors were a bit over the top. Service was very poor early on at Thursday evening--now I know why they put the "Request Service" button at each booth. We waited 40 minutes between our starters and the rolls, then had to chase down our server for the check so we could make our performance in time. This would be fine if we wanted to have a leisurely all-night meal, not good if you have a schedule.

Beautiful space, the food was good. Our service unfortunately wasn’t great. Food took longer than usual to come out; two of the hot dishes we ordered came out at room temperature. At times we thought the server forgot to bring out drinks because of how long it took. We were told she was new, so that’s forgivable. Just disappointing as it was a special occasion.

Made a reservation for 7:15 but we arrived early and they accommodated us right away. Service was really nice. Our server was attentive and friendly. Gave us suggestions based on what we were interested in. We were happy with the food we received. The taste was great. The only issue was the table was strangely sticky but it did not look as if it were food. Our cups stuck to the table and we had to actually pull them off the sticky table to take a drink. Overall, great food experience.

Ordinarily, I love KanPai, but I haven't eaten here on a weekend for some time and my recent experience was horrid. Was sat in the bar area near the sushi bar, and it took almost 15 minutes for someone to come get us drinks and we ordered our food right away (we were starving!), which probably would have been fine. Except another 15 minutes passed and we never got our drinks or saw our server. We ended up cancelling our orders and leaving and going to another nearby sushi restaurant. Hoping it was just an anomaly and not a new low standard!

Service was terrible. Food was awesome.

We were on our way to the Milwaukee Rep for a show. We mentioned this when we arrived at 5:30 and that was all we had to say. The hostess was great, the waiter was friendly and informative. The food/rolls came on time and we were on time for the show. The reason I mention this is because I was concerned that we might have slow service as mentioned in a few of the reviews. Needless to say we were not there during a busy time.
The atmosphere was calm and beautifully appointed. It was a very nice beginning to a wonderful evening. We drive from Fond du Lac to see plays at the Rep several times a year. We will be back at Kanpai for another pre Rep meal. Domo Arigato!!!

My wife and I had a very pleasant meal at Kanpai. As always, the food was delicious and the service was friendly and professional. We also love the ambience at Kanpai - a nice mix of relaxing and lively at the same time.

Seems like the food quality recently has been going down. Some maki are being prepared so big for a bite and even the taste wasn't good as it was before though our server was pretty attentive and accommodating not like the past that they always disappeared.

Delicious food with impressive creative maki. Unfortunate super slow service. Took 2 hours to eat here and server didn’t seem to think it was an issue

We had a nice waiter. Food is great as always. The boss is my favorite.
