Talula's Daily - Secret Supper Club
Kanella South is a Cypriot-inspired restaurant and bar with warm and rustic furnishings that is most inviting. Appetizer options include the grilled shrimp skewers with tabbouleh, manti lamb dumplings with yogurt sauce and the feta cheese and thyme filled bureki, which are ideal for sharing. House entrees include the creamy stuffed eggplant, the roasted goat with mint and fava pistou and the grilled fish stuffed wrapped in herb-stuffed grape leaves. With each bite it becomes clear that the chefs at Kanella South have a fine understanding of Mediterranean seasonings and traditions, as each meal is delicately aromatic and painstakingly prepared.
They were closed Wtf?
Kanella is closed! Please remove this listing
We went last night at the time of our reservation and the restaurant was closed permanently. Do not go there!
We showed up and the restaurant was closed. Thanks a lot, Open Table.
I loved Kanella, and went there for many years. When I showed up for my most recent reservation this past weekend, we arrived to find out the restaurant is closed (indefinitely?). We had to find another place to eat dinner at the last minute.
I am extremely angry. I made a reservation at this restaurant, confirmed the reservation yesterday with an open table text message...and get there tonight and find out the restaurant is temporarily close. So, we had to drive around and park again and find another restaurant. To boot....I also got a parking ticket. SO, I would say it was a pretty horrible experience. I should get 1000 bonus points for this epic mess up on your part.
no one called us. we checked the website and it said open, called the restaurant and regular message was on. We were very unhappy and inconvenienced.
Kanella is CLOSED. Hopefully this terrific restaurant will reopen. However huge disappointment that neither the restaurant nor open table notified me that they were closed. We arrived for our reservation to find a dark restaurant.
Writing a review or rating the experience is hard to do when you show up at a darkened restaurant to be greeted by a "Cease and Desist Work" order plastered on the window. No heads-up, email, nada.
Someone dropped the ball, and if it was the ownership/staff at Kanella, suffice to say
they will neither deserve nor receive a return visit. There are scores of other places that get customer service right.
You shouldn't have been taking reservations for days you were closed, or should've called/emailed everyone to inform them that their reservations were cancelled. I was really looking forward to eating at Kanella, but I am not interested in risking another fiasco. I hear it was because of tax reasons. Well how many lost customers is worth your tax break? Also, evading taxes is pretty tasteless given the current political/economic climate.
Place was closed by City of Philadelphia due to an outstanding tax lien.
I should have been notified in time so alternative plans could be made.
It was CLOSED!!! We showed up for our reservation and it had notice that it was closed by the city a week ago! Which was before I made the reservation
Made a reservation and arrived at restaurant to find they were closed. Apparently for tax purposes. The restaurant could have called to notify diners that they were closed.
Kanella South was closed due to tax evasion. Opentable was unaware and we were unable to eat at this restaurant. Do not make a reservation here!
You got me a reservation for 5:30 and when we got there, the restaurant was closed. Thanks a lot. Jack Greenberg
Place is still taking reservations on open table but has been closed by the city. Do not book!
The food and service are outstanding. Always a pleasure to eat at Kanella’s
Have been to the other location but this is beautiful and the food was just as amazing!
Food was excellent, as last time. Would have given more start but the wait staff seemed to be confused and traded off on our table and others, with some errors and attempts to deliver someone else's order. In addition, they were out of pita, which is hard to believe.
Food was very good. Our drinks, a beer and a cocktail, didn't arrive until after entrees were served. Server was generally disengaged. Decided to cut and run for dessert and drinks down the street.
We went early for dinner before a PhilOrch concert. This was our fourth Kanella South dinner, but the first time at the counter. The chefs engaged with us and discussed the work they were doing. We shared 3 appetizers, all great. But if you try only one, go for the octopus with potatoes. Then my wife had the grilled Bronzino, and I had the spit-roasted pork shoulder. The preparation was spot-on, the flavors memorable. It was a lot of fun, and we certainly will be back.
Our experience was absolutely amazing; we're already planning our next trip back.
Kanella was GREAT as always. THE staff is so accommodating and the food is so delicious. I highly recommend Kanella to all my family and friends.
Last time we had EXCELLENT table side service. The other night we sat at the bar and the service was great. The food was delicious and there were choices for vegetarians and pescatarians.
Great seafood and specials
We hadn't been here for a few months becaue we were trying new restaurants that had opened up. So glad we came back - the food is excellent, perhaps even better than I remember previously, if that's possible. Service was also excellent. The reason I gave only 4 stars for ambiance was that the large space, with lots of windows, was chilly on this very very cold evening. However, out waiter was extremely solicitous (maybe we reminded him of his grandparents?) and helpful, and found probably the warmest internal place in the restaurant, away from any windows. We're so grateful for that. We'll be back to coming here for many of our meals.
Awesome New Year’s Eve Pre Fixe menu and a view of the fireworks.
Finally got to sit at the Chef’s counter. Great fun and informative.
Food is outstanding. The service great. This is not a cheap restaurant, but I have paid far more i other restaurants for far less quality. It is really a great place.
The food and cocktails are great. Our last two times there, we've had to wait a substantial amount of time despite reservations.
Food was great! We enjoyed everything we ordered - 3 dips, grilled octopus (especially good), sardines. The whole branzino was good too. Cocktails were also delicious. Our server was wonderful.
Wonderful food, staff, and experience. Simply Amazing.
My daughter and I took a day trip to Philly to see the Barnes. So pleased to have such a fantastic experience at Kanella South. Wonderful food and service, never felt rushed, wish we had a branch of this restaurant in NYC. Highly recommend.
..nothing fancy here, but the food is prepared well and the many interesting tastes of Greece are evident in the servings...nice selection of Greek wines and spirits...a nice friendly little place...
Excellent - this was a family gathering for the holidays. The food and service were outstanding. Will be back for no other reason then it was great - thank you
I have been to Kannella's South a number of times. The food is always superb and different from what's available elsewhere. If you haven't tried Cypriot food, you should. The cocktail menu is also wonderful and offers a break from the ordinary. On this latest occasion, my daughter and I sat at the "counter," the back seating overlooking the grill/wood burning oven/chef station. Great fun getting to watch the chef and owner prepare dishes like whole grilled fish and various steaks and chops. My daughter and I are vegetarians and we both had delectable entrees. There were plenty of vegetarian appetizer choices as well. I highly recommend Kannella's South.
Outstanding Greek Cipriot food in a very attractive setting.
Excellent experiance. Service, drinks, appetizers, main course and desert all top notch.
Consistently excellent food (especially the appetizers:dip of the day, octopus, manti, and more)), friendly efficient knowledgable servers, and fair prices. This is one of our favorite places in Philadelphia.
Delicious food as always!
This was my first time at the front street location and I loved the booth seating and the menu. The lighting was a little harsh (admitedly I have sensitive eyes) and made me wish there were candles. Service was friendly and efficient. All around a lovely evening to celebrate my birthday.
I've been here several times for dinner. This time was for Sunday brunch and it was so yummy as always.
