Have been to Kanella several times. This time was a disappointment. Pieces of the lettuce in our salad were frozen, which was bizarre and not enjoyable. Our entrees overall were greasy and not at all like the food we have eaten in the past. It was a really off night for Kanella.
Excellent food, service and value. This is the 2nd time I've been to Kanella Grill for dinner (as well as lunch on one occasion) and it's fast becoming my go-to choice for dinner. While the noise level at dinner can be overpowering, I've learned to request a table (for 2) near the windows, which is somewhat apart from the larger tables with multiple diners.
outstanding grilled octopus app; outstanding fava bean soup; entrees of lamb kofta kebab and chicken kebab were very over-cooked, dry; sides of hummus and salad very good; stuffed eggplant special great, warm and comforting
Definitely try the dips of the day and the mezze is totally worth the price..if going in a large group. BYOB is the icing on the cake.
Always fresh and delicious.
The food and service were fine. The hostess was extremely unpleasant.
We all loved our meal
We tried some of the special salads
They were great
A small request to add a green vegetable such as Horta or Swiss chard
Kanella is a great neighborhood BYOB that always offers fresh Greek Dishes inspired from Cyprus where the family is from. The fish offerings are always fresh and usually you can find a nice eggplant dish. You must order dessert and Greek style coffee! Both are always a nice way to end a meal.
One of the best dining experiences I've ever had! Truly unique and fresh flavor, without losing any of the traditional Cypriot flare (I am Cypriot, and the food absolutely reminds me of Cyprus). Every ingredient was the highest quality, and their rotating specials always keep their menu interesting. I cannot think of a better way to start a meal than the dips of the day with warm pita, and ending my night with the Galaktaboureko was heavenly. 10/10
I was really blown away by the food here. We started with tzatziki, hummus, and eggplant salad - the eggplant was particularly delicious, I’ve never had eggplant melt in my mouth like that. Then we had a classic lamb gyro and the two specials that night - a lamb stew and a white fish similar to sea bass (can’t remember the name). I can’t even describe how delicious the two specials were, easily the best lamb I’ve had in Philly and the fish was so fluffy and flavorful. The gyro was also solid. For dessert we had baklava, Galaktoboureko, and a special orange chocolate mousse - everything was phenomenal, my favorite was the Galaktoboureko. In addition to the outstanding food, the ambience is charming and the service is perfect. I know everyone says great things about kanella but I was not expecting it to be this amazing. Easily in my top favorite restaurants in Philly.
Only complaint was every bit of the food came out in a 45 second time frame ... at an 845 reservation seemed like they wanted to get the kitchen shut down ASAP.
Great good and experience otherwise
Service was very gracious, efficient and fast. Had I realize it was a BYOB I would have brought wine. The trio of dips was excellent and my salmon over rice with salad was great. The chicken was too charred for Julia's liking. They offered to make another skewer for her, but she had enough with the side items and the salad and we didn't worry about it. They took it off of our bill anyway. I definitely recommend this restaurant for a quick, simple menu that is real tasty!
Just moved onto the block and wanted to try out the spots closest first. Kanella Grille was easy to make a reservation at and we sat right away and had delicious food with pleasant service :)
First time at Kanellas. Overall, very good. Not used to mint in the tzatziki but it was still good. Dessert was excellent.
Food as noted, the food & service were excellent & the table placement for 2 against the windows made dinner conversation possible. It was a delightful dining experience! My suggestion would be, whenever possible, a dinner reservation for a party of 2 should always be away from tables for larger groups of diners.
Being a Greek you sometimes go into Greek restaurants not knowing what to expect, will it taste like Mom’s or will it be commercially disappointing. Well this is definitely Mom’s cooking. The ingredients were fresh and the portions were plentiful. The atmosphere was cozy and the decor was definitely Greek. High recommend. Opa!
Delicious and fresh tasting salads! Grilled octopus was done excellently. We also had Lamb Kevab which was also very good. Baklava taste like home made.
Bring your own wine!!
Service was attentive and fast.
The only slight negative was that it was a little chilly in the restaurant, only later they seemed to turn the heat on.
We went once again to Kanella Grill on a Saturday before a Walnut Street Theatre matinee, and again we were not disappointed. We shared a “Dip of the Day”, and then had “Kanella Platter”, with swordfish for my wife, and with pork belly for myself, both of these were specials of the day, and they were wonderful. And finally, coffee with sweets.
Great food ... good service ... definitely worth a try!
Great food and friendly staff. A true neighborhood gem!
The charm of this place is in the personal attention, the delicious food, the nice portions and the friendly atmosphere. Ive never been to Cyprus but i think it was pretty close.
This is my first visit, it was very pleasant. Although the restaurant was pretty full it wasn't noisy, and we could still have a conversation. Loved the food, everything was delicious.
There was a significant error in restaurant's favor on our check, which was corrected after we noticed it.
I've been to Kanella a number of times but this was my first with a large group. Service, timeliness, and food was as amazing as always. They're always great from start to finish.
Always love this place! Amazing food and great service, all at a great price - what more could you want?
Love the Baba Ganoush and the Lamb Kofka Kabob was superb! We'll definitely be back!
Kanella Grill, located on the corner on Spruce at 10th St, was surprisingly not busy at noon on the first Saturday of the car show. My plan to go a little farther out to avoid the crowds we experienced in Reading Terminal worked! We were seated quickly in the middle of a bright room, water served immediately, and a quick order of the daily order of chips and dip was placed in the middle of the table within 15 minutes after arrival. The ratio of the fluffy, still warm pita to the three servings of dip was good, and kept 4 of us happy until our meals arrived. Dips included a delicious, not overly spiced pumpkin hummus, fresh tzatiki and a smooth as mom's mashed potatoes regular hummus. Delish! Our lunch platters ranged between $11-$15, with the Kanella Platters very generous with another dollop of hummus, two traditional Greek salads, some olives, and your chosen protein. My rice pudding was voted best dessert, and coffee was fresh. Service was very attentive, but not intrusive. The only drawback was no liquor license, but there are places nearby to buy beer, etc.
Outstanding. We had such great service and the food was wonderful. I don’t know why we don’t go more often since we live close by! Excited for a return visit. Such a sweet neighborhood gem.
Because we were a party of 6, the service charge was included in our bill. I would have to say this seemed to impact our service. Our waiter was inattentive and put off by our occasional (very normal) requests. Our water ran out half way through the meal with no refill. I rather pay for the level of service we receive!
I have been coming here for 10 years. The food is always on point and the service is right up there with the food. I am so glad the original location is back to how it was when it first opened. Hands down THE best Greek/ Mediterranean food in the city. We come once a week now since the change lol
They were able to squeeze in our reservation at the last minute...very helpful. Great food and service. Sitting near the door was a bit cold when it opened....but nothing to complain about.
Great service and staff, waiters are kind and knowledgeable. Food is amazing!!!
The food and service are fantastic. The table layout is a bit crowded.
Everything was explained clearly and the food was fresh and delicious. Definitely coming back!
Our party of 4 enjoyed our dinners here very much. The menu is limited, but the quality of the food and the service was excellent, and we all found selections that pleased us. It's BYOB, so we enjoyed our wine and appreciate the reduced price for excellent food and service. It was a bit noisy on a Sunday evening, but not so much as to prevent conversation. We all had a great time, and were pleasantly amazed when we received the check. Great food, great service and excellent value.
Good little Cypriot place flavors were good with nice selection for brunch of Asian Minor dishes middle eastern and Greek service was good but no salt on the tables although the place is small had ample room tbh was expecting better and or Greek coffee but maybe had to ask overall experience was good and I’d go again
First timer for a date night to try something new. Wait-staff was excellent in explaining the dishes and questions I had. They made recommendations for us as we do not often eat Greek food. The noise level was a bit loud but was the small dining room was full of families and friends having a good time with awesome food. Highly recommend. Didn't notice it was a BYOB when I booked the reservation through OpenTable so next time I will be sure to BYOB.
Great meal for my wife’s birthday
Our server was wonderful! Very descriptive about the menu. Desserts were great!
Excellent food and excellent service
While I miss the full menu of Kanella's the grill still brings their very best.
