authentic food served with a smile! the menu does not have too many options, they keep it simply and delicious. Will be back.
Excellent food, service & value. While noise level is certainly "energetic," aforementioned factors outweigh an "energetic" noise level.
Dinner with my wife prior to heading over to the Wells Fargo Center to see Justin Timberlake. First, we have been dining at Kanella over the years, as a pre-show spot. The Grill is their latest evolution, and worked well for us on this night. We ordered the Dips of the Day, a choice of 3 different dips to go with pita bread, which was a delicious starter. I had the Lamb Kofta kebab platter, as recommended by the waiter, which was terrific. My wife also had a kebab (chicken) which she enjoyed. The waiter (wish i remembered his name) was very helpful, and attentive - all his recommendations hit. The space is nice, open, feels 'Mediterranean', with a casual cool vibe. Noise was low to moderate - very easy to have a great conversation in.
Love to have dinner at Kanella but was surprised that you had no fish available that night. And also no moussaka.
Very good restaurant. Neighborhood feel with great food.
Nice food. Recommended
Food is delicious and the price is even better.
Service is always great. The food is always so delicious and fresh. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Philly for a low key, affordable night out with friends and even family. I come here regularly and I’m never disappointed!
Food was really good! That watermelon, arugula and feta salad was FANTASTIC!!
Excellent food - This is our "go to spot" before the Walnut theater!
This place never disappoints. Both the food and service are simply top notch. On this night the “dips of the day” were incredible, as was main course.
Delicious authentic Greek food in laid-back atmosphere
Have to do the family style with more than 6 people which is fine but was mediocre food. Greek food 101. All basics nothing adventurous. Sides good including beets salad tzitziki etc. entrees. Chicken kabobs good especially the thigh ones. Pork really dry and lamb sausage okay. Spinakopita okay. Wish there was a fish or some offer of choice. An okay amount of food. Dessert okay. Not enough of each dessert for each person to have one
The simple fact is that, notwithstanding the warm wait staff, the food was just average. Note that their gyros are not the strips of lamb that you might expect, but chips of a pork/beef mixture. I prefer the traditional.
Great BYOB for delicious mediterranean food. Have been there multiple times and have never been disappointed.
Have been to Kanella several times. This time was a disappointment. Pieces of the lettuce in our salad were frozen, which was bizarre and not enjoyable. Our entrees overall were greasy and not at all like the food we have eaten in the past. It was a really off night for Kanella.
Excellent food, service and value. This is the 2nd time I've been to Kanella Grill for dinner (as well as lunch on one occasion) and it's fast becoming my go-to choice for dinner. While the noise level at dinner can be overpowering, I've learned to request a table (for 2) near the windows, which is somewhat apart from the larger tables with multiple diners.
outstanding grilled octopus app; outstanding fava bean soup; entrees of lamb kofta kebab and chicken kebab were very over-cooked, dry; sides of hummus and salad very good; stuffed eggplant special great, warm and comforting
Definitely try the dips of the day and the mezze is totally worth the price..if going in a large group. BYOB is the icing on the cake.
Always fresh and delicious.
The food and service were fine. The hostess was extremely unpleasant.
We all loved our meal
We tried some of the special salads
They were great
A small request to add a green vegetable such as Horta or Swiss chard
Kanella is a great neighborhood BYOB that always offers fresh Greek Dishes inspired from Cyprus where the family is from. The fish offerings are always fresh and usually you can find a nice eggplant dish. You must order dessert and Greek style coffee! Both are always a nice way to end a meal.
One of the best dining experiences I've ever had! Truly unique and fresh flavor, without losing any of the traditional Cypriot flare (I am Cypriot, and the food absolutely reminds me of Cyprus). Every ingredient was the highest quality, and their rotating specials always keep their menu interesting. I cannot think of a better way to start a meal than the dips of the day with warm pita, and ending my night with the Galaktaboureko was heavenly. 10/10
I was really blown away by the food here. We started with tzatziki, hummus, and eggplant salad - the eggplant was particularly delicious, I’ve never had eggplant melt in my mouth like that. Then we had a classic lamb gyro and the two specials that night - a lamb stew and a white fish similar to sea bass (can’t remember the name). I can’t even describe how delicious the two specials were, easily the best lamb I’ve had in Philly and the fish was so fluffy and flavorful. The gyro was also solid. For dessert we had baklava, Galaktoboureko, and a special orange chocolate mousse - everything was phenomenal, my favorite was the Galaktoboureko. In addition to the outstanding food, the ambience is charming and the service is perfect. I know everyone says great things about kanella but I was not expecting it to be this amazing. Easily in my top favorite restaurants in Philly.
Only complaint was every bit of the food came out in a 45 second time frame ... at an 845 reservation seemed like they wanted to get the kitchen shut down ASAP.
Great good and experience otherwise
Service was very gracious, efficient and fast. Had I realize it was a BYOB I would have brought wine. The trio of dips was excellent and my salmon over rice with salad was great. The chicken was too charred for Julia's liking. They offered to make another skewer for her, but she had enough with the side items and the salad and we didn't worry about it. They took it off of our bill anyway. I definitely recommend this restaurant for a quick, simple menu that is real tasty!
Just moved onto the block and wanted to try out the spots closest first. Kanella Grille was easy to make a reservation at and we sat right away and had delicious food with pleasant service :)
First time at Kanellas. Overall, very good. Not used to mint in the tzatziki but it was still good. Dessert was excellent.
Food as noted, the food & service were excellent & the table placement for 2 against the windows made dinner conversation possible. It was a delightful dining experience! My suggestion would be, whenever possible, a dinner reservation for a party of 2 should always be away from tables for larger groups of diners.
Being a Greek you sometimes go into Greek restaurants not knowing what to expect, will it taste like Mom’s or will it be commercially disappointing. Well this is definitely Mom’s cooking. The ingredients were fresh and the portions were plentiful. The atmosphere was cozy and the decor was definitely Greek. High recommend. Opa!
Delicious and fresh tasting salads! Grilled octopus was done excellently. We also had Lamb Kevab which was also very good. Baklava taste like home made.
Bring your own wine!!
Service was attentive and fast.
The only slight negative was that it was a little chilly in the restaurant, only later they seemed to turn the heat on.
We went once again to Kanella Grill on a Saturday before a Walnut Street Theatre matinee, and again we were not disappointed. We shared a “Dip of the Day”, and then had “Kanella Platter”, with swordfish for my wife, and with pork belly for myself, both of these were specials of the day, and they were wonderful. And finally, coffee with sweets.
Went there for Valentines Day and found it to be a cozy intimate spot with great authentic Greek food. Tight quarters but extremely affordable for the amount of food and quality was awesome. Bring a bottle of wine and get ready for some tasty gyros and kebabs.
Great food ... good service ... definitely worth a try!
Great food and friendly staff. A true neighborhood gem!
The charm of this place is in the personal attention, the delicious food, the nice portions and the friendly atmosphere. Ive never been to Cyprus but i think it was pretty close.
This is my first visit, it was very pleasant. Although the restaurant was pretty full it wasn't noisy, and we could still have a conversation. Loved the food, everything was delicious.
There was a significant error in restaurant's favor on our check, which was corrected after we noticed it.
I've been to Kanella a number of times but this was my first with a large group. Service, timeliness, and food was as amazing as always. They're always great from start to finish.
Always love this place! Amazing food and great service, all at a great price - what more could you want?
