Kamiya 86 Ratings and Reviews
Kamiya is one of the newest sushi places in Jacksonville, and has done a great job of attracting a young and vibrant crowd. Usually great service, a few of the waitresses already remember us when we go back.
I have been noticing some of the younger crowds are partaking in saki bombers, when they slam the table and shout boisterously. We stopped going to another sushi place across the street, which we ate at every week for over three years, when this nonsense started.
Sushi restaraunts: have some respect for yourselves and do not offer saki bomber service. It offends those of us who are looking for a nice dining experience. If you want to be a loud frat bar, you will lose customers.
This was our first visit, even though we have been to Pacific Fusion, a sister restaurant that is similar, on 3 or 4 occasions. We prefer Kamiya. It is smaller and more intimate but still feels like a hip Tokyo bistro. We started with Crab Rangoon, perfectly cooked and with an added herb that made it jump out over there versions. My wife had General Tso's chicken, which was crispy and rich and was enough for two more meals. I had the crispy duck over seasoned rice that was just perfect. The duck was not overly spiced so you could taste the succulent goodness of well-cooked duck.
I gave 4 stars to the service only because we had a new waitress, being mentored by a more experienced one. She had a slight problem with our english but was eager and attentive and her back-up caught any mistakes immediately.
We will return soon.
My husband and I enjoy asian food but were disappointed in this restaurant. The decor and service were wonderful and the menu was extensive (perhaps trying to do too much) but the food was only so-so. I ordered vegetable tempura and although the serving was generous and beautifully presented, the coating was not very crisp. My sushi roll was mushy and didn't appear or taste layered. My husband's curry was just OK. We may give it another chance hoping they were just having a bad night.
Thought I would give this place a try with a friend. I had the Thai Garlic Chicken that was good. My friend had the pad thai, which had an unusual flavor that I have not had in any pad thai before. It was off putting and I would not order this here. It was basically noodles. I ordered a specialty cocktail that came in a glass so tall the straw fell in. A Paloma does not need to be in a tall fancy glasss. It was just not appropriate for this drink. Service was forgetful, but cordial. All in all, nothing special. Better asian fusion cuisine elsewhere.
The wife and I finally got a date night and decided to go back here. We had been once before for a small birthday party and really enjoyed the food (the taste and the look.) It is one of those places that you are looking at all the food be delivered to the other tables and asking, "I wonder what that is? " The place was busy and they told us or would be 5 minutes before the table was ready. We decided it would be fun to sit at the bar and gave our table to some poor saps that didn't make a reservation. The staff at the bar was attentive and entertaining. The food was brilliant again and we will be going back next date night to try some other menu items, and yes, sitting at the bar.
Had a lovely time with my friends last week on my birthday. Food was great. Only problem was they didn't have my reservation on file that I made through open table. Luckily, they were able to get my guests seated pretty quickly. It was a Thursday night not a weekend thank goodness. Had a nice time, will go back.
When you enter Kamiya you note the ambience surrounding the beautifully appointed bar and seating area. At 7 PM on a Saturday, Most tables were occupied. Fortunately, we had a reservation and our table was available. The server was busy closing out the bill at another table so we had to wait to order drinks. The same type of delay occurred when to requested our bill. The server explained the menu and specials after bringing our drinks. She was very friendly and helpful. The sushi for two and sea weed salad was very good. We plan to return and sit at a table away from the bar so we can converse during dinner!
We did not feel welcomed. I was disappointed in our waitress. I informed them duringf reservation, our family will be coming out to celebrate my daughter's birthday, and I wanted the night special, they did nothing to make it special. The waitress failed to pay attention, did not come back after the food was served to make sure we liked the food. She had my bill wrong.
We came early on Easter sunday (5:00) and had the place to ourselves for half hour. The interior is beautiful, hostess was friendly and explained the different sushi and sashimi characteristics. I had read in other reviews that this was the restaurant to go to for these delicasies. I will totally agree!! The coctails contained liquor, not just fruit juice, the presentation of the sashimi was delightful and the entrees were delishious. We will definitly return.
I was nervous about my restaurant choice when I saw the outside of this place. However, the inside was clean, welcoming and super modern/trendy. The food was amazing! Some of the best I've had in Jacksonville area. The price was very reasonable as well. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants great food, good service and a hip atmosphere. My favorite sushi roll out of the six we ordered was the crazy dynamite roll. Can't wait to go back.
We eat at Kamiya often. We are never disappointed in the service or food. But, this restaurant, like many others, is designed to be noisy and the design works. It is too noisy to carry on a conversation, even though the tic box for most survey forms calls too noisy "energetic". I'm sure some nut case in New York got the idea that loud noise is "energetic". For us it's disruptive, unsophisticated, urban (not urbane), and quite unpleasant. Nevertheless the food and service are quite excellent.
If you like Thai and Sushi, don't want something really expensive, and enjoy fun drinks, this is your place! Although the location seems strip-mallish, when you walk in you forget that is where you are. The ambiance is very young and hip, a bit loud, but food is great and lots of it! I don't eat Sushi but the veggie versions were delicious -and my husband was able to enjoy sushi. The General Tsao was great. A very nice place. Our only disappointment was that we came early to sit at the bar for a bit, but it was jam packed. But - our table was ready so we went there and ordered our pre-dinner drink.
The food at Kamiya is truly wonderful but what an awful place to eat. This was December 28. We moved once because we were by a large noisy party which is normal this time of year and then we were by an eating room with about 5 "frat" acting boys. I don't believe I have ever eaten in a restaurant that allowed that and they kept being served drinks.
This is not an inexpensive venue by the way.
Not once did a manager type circulate.
Design here is a welcome change for Jax beaches so I recommend this place just for that - lots of interesting lighting and textured high end materials - beautiful and stylish in a very contemporary way. Think: real modern China! Sushi and fresh rolls were excellent, the cooked food good but needs a greater emphasis on healthy prep and dishes (too many friend meat main and other courses). Sauces need a MUCH lighter hand with fresher more authentic tastes. They use the same brown sauce on all dishes with only minimal variations. Its ok - but not special. Overall though, a good find at the beach, the bar area which is well stocked looks like it can get lively. Would like to see dim sum and traditional crisp roasted(not fried) peking duck!
