Kairoa Brewing Company
With over 10 years of brewing experience, our brewer Joe Peach aims to meld the flavors of a faraway homeland and the innovation of the San Diego beer scene.
The food is New Zealand comfort food mixed with American favorites. Nothing beats a New Zealand style sausage roll and a fresh beer.
Our mission is to create delicious beer and food that makes people feel at home in our modern farmhouse designed space, a nod to our family past. Enjoy our rooftop bar with friends while enjoying the sunset over the San Diego urban scenery.
We waited a while for a hostess and there was a line beginning to form for seemingly no reason as the restaurant was pretty empty. No one greeted us or told any of us that someone would be right there. When we were greeted she was kind and helpful, but the hostess stand was cluttered with lots of her personal belongings including what seemed like her making beaded jewelry. When we were seated our server was great. We asked for one of our items to come out as an app, it ended up coming out a min or two after our entrees. Not a big deal but she was on it before we had to even inquire about it which was great! The food was pretty mediocre at best. For the price we could have gone to several other restaurants in the area with much better food than here. The mussels were ok, it was supposed to come with chorizo and it maybe came with 5-6 tiny pieces. There was a hearty portion of bread which was nice but overall it left me wanting more. My husband got the shrimp sliders. He kept saying it tasted like fish and there wasn’t much flavor to it. The best part was the lamb fries. Our server was the best part of the night with her attention to detail and kindness. When we walked out no one said bye including the hostess which was up front staring down at her jewelry making. Just didn’t feel very hospitable, but If you’re into mediocre food and hospitality this is your spot.
Good food - good atmosphere!
Got in, got a great seat outside, got food, ate and made it to the Diversionary show on time. All was good! We've been there several time and will return!
Brunch upstairs on the rooftop is the place to be if you don't want sports blasting on ten TVs all around you (that's downstairs). Great view of the neighborhood, nice breeze blowing, and a great relaxed vibe. Brunch menu has been disappointingly pared way down, but the full menu offers lots of very tasty Kiwi inspired items. Beers were mixed: really good hoppy session, pilsner, and stout; really off Berlinerweisses in various (almost undrinkable) flavors.
Great new option for the
Large rooftop patio had a comfortable and fun vibe and great view
Food was not as dedicated to kiwi fare as i had hoped and i was a bit disappointed with the meat pie as it was dry. Fish and chips were good - fish was light and flaky and octopus was the best thing on the menu (so we ordered it twice!)
Amazing patio and an epic view for sunsets! Amazing lamb everything. Would totally come back here!!
Live just blocks away and live to sit on the rooftop area but service is either great or completely awful. We keep coming back in hopes we get another good time but will probably not go again for quite sometime.
The menu was so so. I had the special, the rack of lamb. I got shorted. Half a portion, compared to my BF. Salmon salad was good. Fish and chips were not crisp or crunchy. Avocado sandwich was just OK. Oyster appetizer, ok. Not sweet. Specials came out 20 minutes after our others got their food. But the view upstairs on the deck is amazing.
Music was a little loud outside so it was hard to have a conversation, but otherwise love the place.
Rooftop is great but also love the downstairs. Solid beers!
Great outdoor patio!
The menu and dining at Kairoa were top notch. We had an early Saturday lunch so it was not crowded. This month the meat pies was a spicy pulled pork. Very filling and tasty. We also tried the fish and chips which were battered to perfection. Next time we will try some of the lighter salad options.
Eat outside and enjoyed the all night happy hour!
Very enjoyable evening; good crowd; challenging parking
Great place to be up on the rooftop deck!! Food was great, wonderful selection of drinks, great atmosphere.
We had such an amazing time. The environment was great. The service was great. The food was amazing.
We enjoyed our time but it was SO loud that we couldn’t hear one another talk. There was a huge crowd in the middle of the patio that edged right next to our table. I might hesitate to return for this reason. But the food and beer was good.
Nice place to go for dinner/drinks with family or friends. Great choices of wine. The beer is outstanding. The service by (Ethan) was excellent!!
We live in the neighborhood and love what Kairoa brings to the table for university heights. The ambiance is definitely a 10/10, being the only 2 story deck in the area the out door patio is the only way to go. We really enjoy the burgers and fresh salads Kairoa offers. Wasn't as impressed with the beet hummus but nothing too detrimental to dwell on. Overall love this place and will be going back all summer.
We had a great experience, especially booking through OpenTable. We requested the roof deck and a corner table so our group could talk, which was ready when we arrived. Everything was perfect, the food, the service, the ambiance... I highly recommend this restaurant, especially the roof deck.
The food was bland despite the great presentation. The ambiance is amazing. They have a great rooftop with open-air seating and very modern decor. It is probably a great place to grab a beer and hang out, but not recommended as a foodie dinner spot.
got a rooftop seat with awesome views. I was happy to see folks there with well behaved dogs. Great appys and dinner. Not so great for desert
Great spot. Love the rooftop. So nice on a warm evening to sit outside and have tasty food and brew.
The food and service was great- my friends and I had a great time until Trivia started. We were all down for some trivia but the host was downright rude and borderline mean. I can’t imagine many had fun. I’d go with someone else if I were in charge of that.
The space was so open and loud, with high vaulted ceilings, giving it a warehouse feel. It was difficult to have conversations. When it was time for the trivia game, we weren't able to properly participate because we couldn't hear the MC over all the noise. It also made it difficult to continue the evening as it appeared as though the trivia was going to take over the venue - if you weren't there for trivia, it felt like you were being chased out. The setting sun goes directly into your eyes if you face the open windows. There is only street parking, and the meters do not give you your money back if you overpay. We originally wanted to go for the rooftop experience, but it was closed for a private event. Evening came and it grew chilly so we couldn't stay unless we'd brought jackets. The waiters came by infrequently (granted, every table was full up), so I had to go chase down my bill at the end of the evening. The food was fantastic though - spiced lamb street tacos and the gemelli pasta were really excellent. I appreciated that they carried the beyond patty. The beer looked like they knew how to perform a good and proper pour. I'd go back for the food, probably during lunch instead of happy hour/trivia.
Excellent service, food and beers. They were very accommodating as we have a new baby that we brought along. So, this place is baby friendly. The staff was really great. Also, I recommend the brown ale. We sat on the roof, which was sunny and nice, but got a little warm, so I'd say dress accordingly.
Lovely place we loved every bit of it !!!
The beer was good and the food was OK. I'd recommend that more attention be given to the quality of the food and the price should reflect what you are getting for your dollar.
Eat before you go. Area needs more places like this, beer they have is good but wow terrible kitchen.
What a pleasant surprise. Almost all diners were upstairs on the outside patio, with ample outdoor gas heaters,(It can get chilly when the sun goes down in San Diego) and gas fireplaces, couches. lots of comfortable space. Numerous vegan and vegetarian items on menu, though not a vegetarian restaurant at all. Very attentive waiter without fawning. Good spectrum of house brews served in 3 sizes. Food was excellent, I had the "Market fish" , really nice presentation with squash blossom, squash, cauliflower soubise, English peas, fish was perfectly done, served hot. Definitely plan on going back.. despite difficulty parking.
Seven people met on the upper deck for a meeting for the local community association. Most had drinks, some had food. The chicken salad was excellent. It had a delicious and different dressing and lots of chicken and avocado. Colleagues loved the sausage rolls and their beer and wine. We were unable to reserve for 7-8 people on Open Table/the website as we were told on the phone message, but were easily accommodated once we got there at 5pm. The weather was breezy so a little cool; we were glad we had extra layers. The music was loud but not too loud to have a discussion with seven people over two tables. Very nice evening!
Great service, food and drinks
Good view. Need more healthy vegan options.
Loved this place. Great food and service. Ambience is so nice, especially on the roof top. Great selection of beers and food. Had the wings and yank burger. Delicious.
Great atmosphere. Needs to up its game on the food quality.
Great beer and incredible food!
Kairoa is great place to hav good food, good drinks, and a really great location. We ate up on the roof top and it was marvelous. I love all the different areas to just hang out. Our kids live in the neighborhood enjoy going to Kairoa for happy hour. Thank you for a great Mother's Day!
Great food and service, we had a lovely dinner!
The food was AH-MAZING!! Such a great brunch spot. Definitely check out the upstairs patio.
