About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Innovative
  • Lively
Kabawa, a deeply personal restaurant from Chef Paul Carmichael and Momofuku, offers a nuanced and distinct perspective on Caribbean cuisine. Built around a set menu with plenty of choices, it’s a place to take your time, enjoy a meal, and discover something new each time you visit.

Kabawa’s menu is a three-course, $145 prix fixe experience, exclusive of beverage, tax, and gratuity.  The restaurant is divided between kitchen counter seating, an immersive experience with direct chef service, or more secluded table seating.

Structured to showcase the depth and diversity of Caribbean cuisine, our ingredients are thoughtfully procured, fusing local produce from neighborhoods right here in New York with specialty items sourced directly from the Caribbean.

Every touch point — from the custom mosaics to the ingredient sourcing to the instrumental music — is intentional, tapping into Chef Paul’s upbringing in Barbados to reflect the vibrant, welcoming spirit of a Caribbean home.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Paul Carmichael

From the OpenTable editors: Momofuku's first new NYC restaurant in years is reason enough to get excited. Another is internationally celebrated chef Paul Carmichael, who runs the show here by showcasing his Barbadian heritage through a three-course menu with dishes like jerk duck sausage and braised goat with spicy scallop creole. Custom mosaics, the open kitchen with counter seating, and a welcome roti platter set the tone for a relaxed, Caribbean home-like experience.

Had a blast a Kabawa. The food was excellent but what really made the experience was the kindness and friendliness of the staff. Their verve made the whole evening something really special.

The food was quite good. Not amazing but above average--particularly the starters and mains (the desserts were boring). It was overpriced with small portions but that is common today in NYC so my overall review is not based on the value. My main gripe is that the restaurant is very noisy and it's not due to the music that you can barely hear. It is the noise of pots and pans dropping in the open kitchen and also of customers screaming to hear each other over others, almost like a bar scenario except that this was not a bar but a wannabe fancy restaurant. Also, my guest and I sat at a table, by choice, rather than at the counter, because I wanted to have a conversation. That was challenging enough given the noise level but the restaurant's tables are also strangely deep which meant that I was probably 4 feet away from my guest who was facing me so I had to resort to reading lips. Also, the service was very friendly but just too much. It was a constant interruption of "how is everything", etc. Overall, I don't think it was worth $600 for two with wine and I wouldn't rush to go back.

Amazing food, great wine-tasting, and I made awkward eye-contact with Padma Lakshmi as she was coming out of the bathroom: 10 out of 5 stars!

Exceptional food and waitstaff. The accompaniments to the main dishes are unbelievable. The flavors across the board were just tremendous and unique. Can’t wait to go back. The only knock is that the host gave our reservation away to another party. Had to wait at the bar for 15 minutes. Could have done without that. Otherwise an amazing experience.

This new gem of a place by Chef Paul Carmichael is already a star. A very warm and friendly staff and outstanding, creative food. The noise is a bit high but, hey, what the heck! We're definitely returning.

Great food. Everything we had was delicious flavorful and unique, the chef was very nice and came over and spoke to every table, drinks are 10/10 here. Bartender put together something custom for me according to my preferences since I couldn’t decide and knocked it out of the park. A little pricey but overall worth the visit
