Room is very attractive and it's easy to have a one-on-one conversation. Service was acceptable, but somewhat delayed as we had to wait between courses for several minutes. Could have been a function of what we ordered. Food choices are somewhat limited, but we understood that going in. Price of selections is reasonable.
We chose some of the less-well-talked about options (so, we did not have chicken). In retrospect, I wish I'd stuck with the chicken. The catfish, in my opinion, ended up being a shade too dry for my tastes, and the Ritz cracker crust was not something I'd ask for again. We also chose some small plate items to share.
This is our second trip to Juniper. We'll definitely return, but may focus on some other menu options when we do.
Elevated southern cuisine. Seasoning on the bland side, but overall good food.
My second visit at Juniper; first on a weeknight. First, the staff is super; they are very friendly. Second, the food this time was largely good, but a little inconsistent. Fried chicken was excellent. Devilled eggs were good. Some of the other items were not at the same level of quality. Third, and I did not notice this the first time, the restaurant seems a little crowded - like it would be great if they had just another 100 square feet of space. But overall a good evening and a solid value for some interesting menu items!
Great food and atmosphere; our waiter was fun and we enjoyed our evening with friends.
Food was delicious and so much of it! The bread basket was a real treat and the fried chicken was special. Also loved the she crab soup and the shrimp toast.
This was my second visit. I really enjoyed the food, that's why I recommended it to family and friends. While ordering, I was recommending food that I had enjoyed. Our waiter, Bob, said "Are you going to let them choose, or are you ordering g for everybody"? In a very snarky tone. Everyone at the table was shocked by his rude tone. He was also pretty slow to check back on us for more drinks, etc.
I had enjoyed the food and ambience enough the first time to return. I won't be back.
Disappointed with limited menu on Monday nite for restricted diet.
We went to this restaurant after it was mentioned on an episode of "Barnwood Builders" on HGTV. Loved it! Upscale comfort food, wide variety on the menu, creative decor, helpful and prompt service! The only negative was understanding what was included in a "3 for 35" menu deal. We had it explained to us a couple of times - because we weren't paying close enough attention the first time - and it was smooth sailing from then on.
Food was great, servers were informative and cordial, we went on a quiet day i think
As always John and his team provided us with great service, drinks and food. The only “problem” was this was the first time we did their $35 3 course option. Normally we just have 2 starters. 1 small plate and either a 2nd small plate or 1 main. The value of 2 starters, 2 small plates and 2 mains was too hard to pass up when we each saw a main that caught our interest. We both were full when the mains arrived so we took a couple bites and boxed it up. Both were great for lunch the next day.
Recipes were very good but we waited one hour fifteen minutes for entrees. When they arrived steaks (specials of the day) were over cooked, fried chicken and shrimp and grits (4 diners) were lukewarm. Did not send them back because we were going to an event, we had no idea how much longer this would take and we were tired of the place by then.
Restaurant did not offer any apology or credit of any kind. For $210 for 4 people, we can get much better food and service elsewhere.
Also, restaurant does not have a contact email address. So, they obviously are not interested in customer comments. I wrote and posted a letter.
This is a cozy spot in the quiet area of the Central West End. The cocktail menu is interesting and inventive. The drinks are very well prepared and pair well with the food options. The wine list is well priced with great options. The small plates are excellent for sharing and this seems to be a great way to go - don’t miss the bread basket choices! The fried chicken is nice and when paired with the house prepared hot sauce is a winning choice.
Grest food and location is perfect.
Went in with friends for the Monday Meat & Three (fried chicken with 3 sides served family style) and was not disappointed! The food was delicious and our server (Rachel, I think) was attentive without being all up in our business.
Food was outstanding. Fantastic combination of flavors and ingredients. Between the 2 of us we had 6 different servings and all were excellent.
The 2 for $35 menu is a little hard to understand without asking questions.
If there is loud group in the restaurant, it is pretty noisy with the wood floors, brick walls, etc.
Seating in the front, the 2-tops in front of the window, are not the most comfortable seats. Look great, but more back support would be appreciated I am sure. And the hi top chairs are not much better. It is a great space, just needs some comfort added to it.
Really enjoyed. Great atmosphere. Impressed by service, literally everyone was welcoming and smiling. Would definitely go back!
Wait staff was super knowledgeable and helpful
We joined fellow Southern-food-loving-friends and had an excellent meal. The bread assortment is great to share. One friend raved about the collard greens as the best ever. Shrimp & grits as well as fried catfish were outstanding. Only wish we'd saved room for dessert. We'll be back!
Great bourbon menu.
Fried chicken was over-fried.
Sweet potato nuggets bland.
Mac and cheese drowning in bread crumbs.
Limited menu, especially if one does not eat pork.(even biscuits have lard).
Our favorite restaurant in St. Louis, and it's not even close. Amazing food. Zero pretentiousness. They care about their work and their customers, and it shows from the drinks to the grub. Go.
So happy to have found this place, it's an excellent option for an early dinner with business associates. Wait staff was excellent at explaining dishes, patient with us and didn't mind
us lingering too long or splitting up the check! FYI the Happy Hour runs till 6 and includes drinks (beer, wine and cocktails) and appetizers, so if your coming straight from work you have time to get in on that deal. The food is outstanding value. It's elevated southern comfort food. Flavors were concentrated and intense. The bread was amazing and so too is the fried chicken and vegetable sides. "Wow, that's good" was frequently expressed aloud at our table.
We went late so the restaurant was pretty much empty. When we ordered, the food came out quickly. Everything was great except the Mac and Cheese was EXTREMELY salty. I don’t think it was supposed to taste that way but we didn’t bother making a fuss about it and just left it alone.
Had the she crab soup, BBQ shrimp toast and shrimp and grits - all were fantastic. Went here with my wife and she got the deviled eggs which were truly incredible. Solid cocktails and ambiance with a lot of energy. Great spot for date night or just night out. A little pricey but would definitely do it again.
Juniper is not somewhere I would have chosen if I didn't have a gift card to use, but I am glad I went. The fried chicken is very, very good. Miss the mac and cheese, its too salty. The collard greens were amazing and I'm not that into greens. I saw a lot of the deviled eggs going out so those must have been really good but I didn't try them. The cocktails were really good and creative but a bit on the pricey side.
As far as ambiance, this place looks a lot like a lot of other places do right now. High ceilings, exposed brick, heavy wood communal tables and minimalist, rustic decor. Its cute and comfortable if not a little kitch. It is quite loud though, due to the aforementioned ceilings, so I would not recommend it if you're looking for a quiet dinner or conversation spot.
The food was excellent, but I was very disappointed in my red snapper entree. Our server said it was one of his favorites, but the fish was tough, almost rubbery and the flavor was pretty bland (very buttery). I realize I should have said something, but I went ahead and ate it and was disappointed. Otherwise, the 3 for $35 was an excellent deal for the amount of food we got. The carrot appetizer was fantastic, as was the she crab soup and other sides.
Incredible once again!! Juniper never disappoints and will always be our favorite place to dine in STL!
Valentines day. Great 5 course.
Absolutely loved this meal. Don’t usually like a prixe-fixe menu but this one was so well thought out and executed.. I had the vegetarian menu and loved every bite. Can’t wait to go back for the next set menu, even though I love the regular offerings. Outstanding!
Dinner with family
We enjoyed an excellent dinner at Juniper on Saturday night. The food was outstanding; the service was terrific; and the menu was fun. I highly recommend Juniper if you have a hankerin' to try southern food. The restaurant is a little small, so I recommend you make reservations, but it also appeared to have cleared out not too late in the evening. Great food; great fun.
I CELEBRATED MY BIRTHDAY AT JUNIPER. LYDIA THE WAITRESS WAS EXCELLENT. SHE EXPLAIN IN DETAIL THE MENU AND ANSWERED ANY QUESTIONS WE HAD. THE FRIED CHICKEN WAS VERY FLAVORFUL AND DELICIOUS. MY PARTY OF 8 HAD A GREAT TIME. WE WILL DEFINITELY COME AGAIN
Juniper never disappoints with its elevated comfort food. I find it impossible to choose my favorite item.
Juniper is one of our go to restaurants. Love the deviled eggs. Love the southern fusion twist to the menu. We have had the same server several times and he is great. Will miss the old brick walled building and the storefront tables when they move.
Southern style with some interesting twists. It gets a tad loud and the chairs are not super-comfy, but the drinks are divine, and the food rivals any southern grandma's recipes. Added plus: the neighborhood has a cool vibe.
Food was pretty good, but not great. Everything else basically sucked.
We loved this Resturant, food was excellent, we even had a piece of cake, complements of the house, to help celebrate our anniversary
Third time for us at Junipers...Food and drinks fabulous as in the past. Disappointed that they no longer offer valet parking as the neighborhood is a little sketchy. Service was a little off but the restaurant was very busy and the server was getting pulled around.
Services was good and good choice for before the Fox.
Sodas do not have refills because they do not have fountain (warned in advance).
Bread plate was very good as was soup and fried chicken
Chicken and dumplings was really chicken and biscuits in a skillet.
Too much bread not enough chicken and broth.
The menu is limited but each member of our group of four felt that the food was outstandingly tasty and original. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. The restaurant has a rustic feel that makes it feel unpretentious, but the attentiveness to the food and service makes clear that the hunting lodge feel of the room conveys not carelessness but comfort and community. Bravo.
We were very disappointed in our dinner. Had been there once before and found it was convenient on our way to Symphony. Over rated and food was not very good.
