Juniper & Ivy Ratings and Reviews
We have been to this restaurant a few times. This time will be our last. We had the absolute worst service. Every course took very long to arrive. The server would come back periodically and say it would be ready soon then disappear. When we asked for the check and were ready to leave, it took a while to get the check. When we said we didn’t want desert she said oh we were going to give you dessert. Then she said can pack it to go. Ok. We are on the way to the door and they give us a little box with some cold mush which included some ice cream (which by definition doesn’t travel well). It was enough for 1 person and we were a party of 4. Will not be going back. Would not recommend.
The service was extremely impersonal and unimpressive. Our server forgot about one of our five dishes, and charged our card for the wrong tables menu and did not really make up for it an any other way. I expected a much better expierence for a nice place on my birthday.
Lovely place. Seated as requested with reservation. Nice version of deviled egg as amuse bouche. Great menu. Each plate well-described. Drinks ordered first with 4 bites. Second drinks ordered at some point. Food was good. Desserts divine. Wait staff appropriate tho not particularly attentive: After we ordered dessert, staff presented one sweet on a stick (looked like a white yogurt bar/cremesicle) and some kind of champagne/wine (I tasted neither) said to be in honor of the occasion. Timing seemed off. Would have expected such presentation at some point prior to dessert order or not at all. The only major disappointment occurred when we inquired about a delicious looking dish delivered to a nearby table and learned that it was from “the secret menu.” We understand marketing ploys, but, really, a “secret menu”? Who knew we should have been following Richard Blaise on Twitter to be aware of this phenomenon? And we liked him so much on Top Chef! We felt almost hurt. Still, the food and atmosphere are quite good. We might try it again.
Hands down - THE BEST RESTAURANT in San Diego! This place never disappoints us! We began our evening with a great glass of Alberino and then started with several "small bites" - all delicious! The favorite was the cookie - although a bit sweet, it was fabulous! We then progressed through the menu, trying 7 or 8 small plates that we all four shared - only not favoring 1 out of all - the uni. When we told our waiter, he showed up at the end of the meal with a complimentary dessert for the table! We also ordered the almond cake & homemade ice cream - to die for!!!! This restaurant is such a treat and considering all of the food that we consumed, the price was very reasonable!
I consider myself a Foody, so when I found out that my wife and I were heading to San Diego I jumped to get a reservation at Juniper & Ivy, and it was wonderful! Service was excellent, the ambiance was chic, and there was a great energy amongst the customers and the staff. I highly recommmend to anyone heading to San Diego to get a reservation here...
I have to say I was disappointed ...our service was very slow as our dinner was two hours long and there was a significant amount of time between courses. The pork pot pie lacked flavor despite being highly recommended by the waiter. Wine selection was OK but most bottles were 3 times the retail price. Fairly expensive ( whole duck recommended at $78 but we didn’t order) and I wasn’t that impressed. Many tables around Susan Dow after us and left before us so not sure where the disconnect with our server was.
One of the best restaurant in San Diego. I Celebrated my Husband's 30th Birthday there recently and they made sure that we were happy and comfortable. They went above and beyond to make vegetarian out of menu meal for us. Our hostess was very friendly and respectful. They made us feel so good and special. i would definitely go there again.
Enjoyed the creative food and ambiance. The bar service was only mediocre. The original guy who asked if he could help us didn’t seem to know anything about the food or the drinks at all. Luckily there was another female bartender back there and she finally came over and offered up suggestions!
This was a meal we had high hopes for, but simply didn't live up to the reputation of the head chef (Richard Blais). The amuse bouche of a deconstructed deviled egg (turning the white into a meringue) was great, but that was about it. Most dishes had too many ingredients that didn't always meld. The sturgeon appetizer was glopped with too much sauce. Two dishes had their proteins over-salted, including the whole duck, just not enough to send them back. The "yodel" dessert looked great until the waiter poured a bland sauce over the entire plate, and it all fell apart when we dove into it. Options of wines by the glass were acceptable, but not stellar, for a restaurant emphasizing small plates. Noise level and music were more at the bar level, rather than appropriate for dining. All-in-all, high-quality ingredients were let down by the hands at work.
Went there for a date and our server was fantastic. Being our first time there, he was more than willing to help us pick out dishes and made great recommendations. The restaurant itself is furnished nicely and in my opinion, great for dates. Overall a great dining experience and I'll definitely be back!
My wife and I each got a regular plate; I got the Tuna Ahi Wellington and my wife got the Scallops. Both very delicious! A good selection of drinks, but I think there could have been a bigger selection. Service was pretty good, but it could have been a bit more attentive. Drinks were empty for a bit longer than I wanted them to be. Noise level not ridiculous but a bit loud so that our voices had to be raised a bit to carry on a conversation.
Fantastic as always! Service is excellent. They treat us like royalty and anticipate all of our needs. The food came out perfect: temperature, taste, visually appealing, creativity, freshness were perfect!
Great pairing suggestions.
Try the oysters, octopus, yodel!
This looked like an interesting restaurant on the face of it, and the decor was fun. But the service was so terrible that we didn't leave a tip. The waitress forgot the wine, our main dish, and slammed the check down when she finally brought it. By then, the manager had come over to offer his concern, although I felt he didn't handle the situation as well as he should have, and I wondered if he had actually fired the waitress. I rarely complain, and you have to behave egregiously for me not to leave a generous tip, so this is a serious complaint. I hope that they were just having a bad night, but I couldn't recommend this restaurant. Food was good, but too many ingredients. I went to Herb and Wood the next night and that place was excellent on all levels, although don't expect a quiet dinner! It was fun.
