Contemporary American
Juniper and Ivy, owned by Michael Rosen with influence from Chef-Partner Richard Blais, elevated the San Diego dining scene upon opening in early 2014. Located in the north end of the Little Italy neighborhood, Juniper and Ivy offers refined American cuisine with unique iterations of the classics. The whimsical menu, executed by Executive Chef Anthony Wells, is in a constant state of change depending on the freshest, seasonal ingredients provided by our local purveyors.

Some of the best food I've ever had! You HAVE TO get the corn dogs while you're here, and the Upside Down Apple Cake is TO DIE FOR! Everything was so great. Definitely recommend, and will definitely be back!

Upon making a reservation I wrote “normal dining area please” for a 530 pm reservation. We get seated in an non normal dining area, aka the bar area, upstairs. We kindly asked if we could sit downstairs in the normal dining area, as mentioned on the reservation and hostess states that’s another 30 min wait. The end.

This restaurant is just lovely. The decor and the ambient music was just the right level. My only complaint
Plaint is that our reservation was at 9:30 and we were not seated until 9:50. We we’re starving in anticipation of our meal so this was a bit disappointing especially since the restaurant has a strict policy y on being late for a reservation. The service was absolutely amazing and made up for the reservation issue. Christie(sp?) helped us curate an absolutely exquisite meal. She was personable, courteous, and very knowledgeable about the menu. She was also very attentive. We had the mushroom and Swiss Madeline and the chorizo corn dogs for our first bites which were both very creative. The madelines were a bit too sweet I love madelines as a rule but I was excited to taste a savory preparation. I missed the mushroom and Swiss flavor and was just hit with sweet . We then had the pork belly and yellow fin for starters and the beef cheeks/ny strip for entrees. Everything was delicious. The beef cheek was tender and flavorful and the fingerling potatoes paired with the strip steak were delectable. We finished off with the sole cage with vanilla ice cream, dulce caramel custard and oats for dessert. My gosh this was really good. We typically don’t have dessert with dinner but this was absolutely worth a splurge. Thank you for such a lovely meal. We’ll be back

Three words: bone marrow ranch. That is, bone marrow ranch drenching each succulent slice of the medium rare New York strip steak that I devoured last Saturday night! My party of four was seated a little after our 7:30pm reservation. I was actually surprised we got seated that fast because the restaurant was packed! You have to try the Day Drinking with the In-Laws cocktail which is a citrusy, vodka-based thirst quencher! Definitely order several of the small plates and share and if you have any question about whether or not you will have enough food, do like we did and order an entrée to share at the end. Pork belly, corn dog bite, spicy tuna handroll, short rib arancini, and everything else we ate was soooo good with complex flavors that just seem to work together! Highly recommended. You won't be disappointed.

Hostesses not very friendly. Then any of the fried food was greasy suggesting oil not hot enough. The specialty cocktails (and we tried 6 out of 8) were odd and not very tasty but obviously we kept trying. A couple of amazing dishes and the rest were meh. My group was very disappointed as we had high hopes.

I had heard great things about Juniper & Ivy so I decided to have my birthday dinner here and it did not disappoint! It had a great ambience, amazing food, and every server that came by our table was very nice and attentive. The food menu is very eclectic and so many different options to choose from. We started with some shared plates including the yellowfin tuna, gnocchi, and schnitzel. The schnitzel was our favorite! I had the steak as a main and it was delicious - came with lots of potatoes too. Definitely coming back here!

Let me preface by saying I'm in the restaurant industry and love food. So I knew this would be a win in my book.

Being a single diner can be lonesome and they didn't make me feel awkward at all. I was seated at the countertop on the corner by the cold food side and hot foods side, which is just heaven for someone like me. My server, Saul, was amazing. He walked me through the menu and the wine list and explained everything. I ordered a glass, and he brought out two other samples to try. Great service. Ended up with the Chenin Blanc, due to it pairing well with multiple types of foods. He gave me amazing suggestions and described them in a way that was more than what was on the menu. (If you didn't see yet, their menu changes daily)

I got the:
Spicy Tuna Handroll: not as spicy as I imagined. Which made it better for me. I don't like spice so that was nice.

Beef Tartare: loved how he explained the difference between the tartare and the crudo. He told me how this would be better suited for me since I was by myself.

Oysters: wow. Not being from here, I've fallen in love with the oysters. I got the 1/2 order, which only came with 3. I could eat so many of those if I wasn't careful.

Also great job to Saul for upselling me on a 1/2 glass of Chablis to pair with the oysters.


Spiny lobster: this was nice. Smaller portion of lobster but that's okay with me. My server mentioned that the chef doesn't like to over order seafood so that it is more sustainable.

Apple cake: it was nice. Not my favorite dessert I've ever had but certainly fitting for the season. I paired it with the sherry, which ended up working well.

Overall, if you're in to food check this place out. As someone in the business this place is so unique. I hope that it stays successful.

The food and ambiance were great! This was a return visit and was very impressed with our server the previous time. Unfortunately this time the server seemed off and not as knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients...it was a disappointment as I had told my friend how wonderful my experience was...

As always, the drinks and food were excellent (although I found the squash blossoms over-breaded and a bit disappointing). Highlights were the squash gnocchi, persimmon salad, quail, and black cod. For desserts, this particular version of the Yodel was not my favorite, but the sour cherry and pomegranate sorbet was refreshing and balanced. One of our party was not a meat eater, and I appreciate the way the kitchen accommodated him by serving the sausage and pork belly in two of the dishes separately. However, the noise level was the worst I've experienced in my five or six times at this restaurant: We had trouble hearing one another in conversation, and those of us not sitting next to the wonderful server as she talked could not hear what she said. Although this is the modern trend in dining, this foodie regrets it.

Started poorly with bar unable to make a french martini for my wife. Dinner service and food were excellent. Tables were close and had obnoxious individuals seated next to us but once they left everything else was great! When in San Diego we will return

This was our favorite food experience of the year so far. Everything (and we got a lot of things) was delicious. We're from New York, follow Blais, and this place has been on our list for a while. We were so happy we came. Service and wine were also very very good. We'll be back.

Second time in a row that a member of my party got sick off the food later that evening. Also after starting out strong the service slacked off as the evening progressed. Sorry J&I...you used to be a favorite but you’ve lost your luster. Now you’re just overpriced and a mess. So long!

Our dinner menu selections exceeded our expectations! Chef Richard Blais' creative concepts, ingredients & techniques still boggles our limited and humble taste buds. We are experienced diners at Juniper & Ivy since its opening in 2014. We were truly amazed - rockfish sashimi with miniture cucumbers (looked more like mini-watermelons) with lilikoi (passion fruit) seeds for texture/flavor, hint of serrano - goodness defined. Plate of whole roasted duck- duck egg on wheat berries, charred veggies underlaying the succulent duck - WOW!!! Fulfilling our enjoyment of the water fowl with the glasses of pinot noir! And dessert - how can it not be excellent with pressed duck fat's savory crust tempering the sweetness of the maple cream/dark chocolate! Thank you!

We sat at the Chef's counter table so we had the satisfaction to see what was coming out of the kitchen. My husband and I loved this kind of experience, because we get to see the hard working team in the kitchen prepping all the beautiful dishes that come in front of us. Our waitress Dolly was very attentionate and was very knowledgeable of the menu, that is constantly changing, so guests can't ever get bored with the food. It would be hard to recommend a dish, since it is always 'Du moment'. Nevertheless, we enjoyed every creative single dishes, from the bites to the sharable plates and their amazing wine selection. Thank you!

Went after seeing chef if cbs morning show. It’s right under glide path for airport. It’s a bit loud and stark feeling The food was ok but there was no salad or soup on the dinner menu. (Nothing green) A little obtuse. The bites were literally one small bite. The plates were pretty small and just ok. I had the carbonara which was tasty but not warm enough. The wait staff was excellent and helpful but we all expected better food. Also they don’t have tanguery gin at the bar ? Martinis were also not cold enough :(. Would not go back and rate it a B-/C+ experience.

Absolutely amazing food. Flavors That just roll off your tongue. Definitely pricy and just touches that line of worth it vs pushing the envelope. Probably still the best restaurant in SD.

This was our first time here and they did not disappoint. We were a group of 8 so lot's different likes. The small plates were so diverse and everyone got to taste something different. We also ordered the duck and ribeye large plates - WOW! They were off the charts! So great - I would highly recommend them for a group. The only negative is that with such a large group we brought our own wine and were willing to pay the $25 corkage fee (ouch) but they only allowed a max of 2 bottles. Oh well - they offered plenty to drink!

We ate so much my tummy hurt. Everything looked so good we order more than we should have. Ask for the burger that's not on the menu. It's delicious and they only make so many a night. 😉
