My wife has wanted to visit this cool location since we moved to San Diego. After eight years we finally made it to the restaurant. When we were seated we were scored into a awkward back alley outdoor seating it was quite uncomfortable and loud with the airplanes flying overhead.
I was so hungry I decided to order albacore hand rolls. When the albacore hand rolls arrived I realize they weren’t here rules at all and it was as if I ordered tacos and received a burger or if I were macaroni and cheese and received a steak. Hand rolls typically come rolled in seaweed and have some resemblance Japanese food. With my handles arrived to my dismay they were smaller than one order of nigiri without really anything to them. There was some strewn out albacore with some crunchyRice crispy’s on top without soy sauce is it really taste like anything. I advise anyone not to try those.
The service was great the ambience is cool but this main dish that I ordered was worse than horrible. I have black ink pasta with mussels and clams. It came with a topping of which seem to be like powdered squid ink with a horrible aftertaste. After taking the first bite I became sick to my stomach because there was this huge overwhelming bitter and nasty taste that envelop my entire mouth all the way down to my gut. You did say that it was supposed to have tomato sauce so I mixed everything up quickly and dove back in. There was no tomato sauce I couldn’t eat it so I ordered a side of tomato sauce. After mixing that in it seemed like things were getting better but the initial buy it without tomato sauce was shocking and ruined everything.
Other people's food was fine. My oysters were fine if small. It was the rigatoni that was very subpar. Worst food I’ve had in a long time. Supposed to be with mussels and shrimp. Saw one mussel and no shrimp. Bland pasta with dry green bread crumbs. Have been to J&I many times, but won't be back any time soon.
the food and service was amazing and i really enjoyed the appetizers we got particularly the sourdough and chicken mousse! Our server Mike was also extremely helpful and amicable !
Was here 2 years ago. The food was exceptional, the menu super creative. The foie gras tart was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.
This time around it was a disappointment. Several things we ordered ended up being unavailable, others substituted. The food was ok, but not phenomenal. The service and dessert (strawberry cheesecake yodel) were very good and sort of made up for the average experience.
Food was okay. The uni toast wasn't balanced and "fishy". I have had uni in Santa Barbara and it was fresh so I was able to compare the two. The raviolo was the best dish. The sauce was buttery and creamy. The main chicken dish was basic. The mushroom and chicken were both spongy, which did not make the plate dynamic. I would recommend more contrasting textures in that dish. The ambiance was solid and service was good.
Amazing as always! 3rd time here.
Everything was top notch. Our server Patrick was on top of everything while the food was out of this world good.
Tried nine plates and left with a great big smile and happy heart and full belly.
Chef Chris made the experience at the Chef’s counter memorable! Angela’s recommendations showed knowledge of the menu and pairings with cocktails and wine. Food service and experience were on point - definitely coming back!
We’ve been eating at J & I since it opened. We are not local but spend much of the Winter months in San Diego. Since discovering Juniper and Ivy years ago, we keep coming back multiple times on every visit. The food is excellent, the bar is creative and excellent, the staff flawless. Not inexpensive, but worth every cent.
Amazing food and service!
I felt very special with everyone wishing me a Happy Birthday. That was extra nice.
We really enjoyed the dinner.
We ordered a kir. It was disappointing that it was made with chambord instead of the traditional creme de cassis.
The persimmons and buruata were very good. My husband really liked the risotto with wild mushroom. I enjoyed the pork shank but would rather have had it with sides instead of in lettace wraps.
Wonderful flavors of everything and fine service. We look forward to returning.
Great service, a lot of attention paid to details and consideration for guests needs. Food was excellent, especially the seafood. Cocktails took a while but were worth the wait.
Fairly overpriced for the food and crappy ambience. People were wearing joggers and baseball caps. We had all
4 courses our waiter Patrick was great but even he couldn’t save our dessert he tried but they were blah. Would not recommend
Waiter was very friendly and prompt. Food service excellent. Noisy sitting outside as jet airplanes landing overhead.
It’s our new favorite San Diego restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious. Our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable in the menu items. Loved our whole experience.
Our server was wonderful and the food was out of this world. Get the short rib, you won’t regret it.
Everyone was nice, every dish delicious. We all shared appetizers, small plates and entrees so we tasted most of the menu. We will definitely return.
Every plate was amazing; creative and delicious. Enjoyed eating at the counter and watching the talented kitchen staff do their magic.
New Year’s Evening with Prix Fixe with 4 courses! Quality of food was great, service was good. The only bad thing was lack of proper planning for the event. They ran out of a couple of items on the menu and did not give other options! I was looking forward to precisely the items they ran out! I understand we are going through some weird times but if they offer something they should have it or give other opt!
Tiny portions, overpriced, bad services. Never again
Nice place to have good food that is not on every menu in San Diego.
The restaurant was clean, upstairs provided a more quiet area to enjoy our date night.
Service was great, waitress was knowledgeable and well timed with her table visits. Courses came out of the kitchen at a good pace and presentation was awesome. The food was good, but didn't come close to what I expected for the price and reviews.. It was good, but not great.
We did not have wine with dinner but the selection was ample.
At the end it was a great evening with my wife that was over-priced.
New Years Eve
Food was pretty good but lacked flavor. Beet salad was very one note. Risotto was delicious but simple.
Wanted to like it more. Very creative with their changing menu. But the food was hit and miss. The Persimmon burrata salad was amazing. The sous vie chicken - not so much. Sometimes technicality and presentation can get in the way of flavor. This was the issue here. Some hits, some strikes. I recommend a try, but know that it may or may not be satisfying. FYI - if still hungry, the chicken shack next door is a great after dinner option.
Came to celebrate my birthday. Service was really quick and on point. Food came out cold and lacked flavor. Drinks tasted fairly similar, none were too sweet. Ambiance was really nice.
Food did not taste over the top like the first time we went, which was 3 years ago when Richard Blais was still in the kitchen.
1. Salmon hand roll - tasted ok. When we had this last time, there was more of a texture to this dish that made for an interesting bite.
2. Yellowtail crudo - tasted bland and needed more salt
3. Asian pear salad - salad lacked Asian pear, the name itself, which was disappointing
4. Persimmon - interesting take on persimmon with the use of burrata, but it also did not wow me
5. Black cod - this was the only dish that had a really nice taste
Overall did not walk away wanting to come back again…which is disappointing. We were genuinely looking forward to it…just simply did not have the same experience as last time.
I think this is a good place that gave me many surprises. food was good, service was good, and everything is perfect.
Counter service. Poor service. Slow service. Lukewarm food. Great food
Waited 40 mins for main entree to be served and steak was not edible. The steak knife couldn’t not cut through the meat.
Food is great and service was awesome!
I used to love J&I. Unfortunately both the food and the service have become increasingly inconsistent over the years. The 2021 Christmas Eve tasting menu was a new low. The seasoning was erratic in every dish, with some dishes over seasoned and others remarkably bland. Desserts now lack creativity - you can only change the flavor of the signature yodel so many times.
Considering it was Christmas Eve I will forgive them. Ambiance & service were excellent but food was horrible. At reservation they should have informed us it was a price fixe menu @ $149 pp & limited menu. Pumpkin soup was mushy, pasta course was over cooked, & beef stew was so overly seasoned it was not edible. Even the butterscotch pudding & pastry were mediocre. Maybe it will be better on an average night?
The food wasn’t the best part of our dining experience it was good but for the cost it really wasn’t the best. But the service the cocktails and the atmosphere was amazing. My wife and I had a great Christmas Eve here.
Server was exceptional. Much Aloha to her and Mahalo for taking care of my family and making sure we had a wonderful experience.
We were seated outside, totally different ambience than inside.
Fantastic food, great service! An awesome place to enjoy fun and flavorful food!
Excellent service - our server was Ali (like Prince Ali, he said!) and he was so gracious and welcoming! The food was wonderful. Would highly recommend the Persimmon and Asian Pear Salad, as well as the schnitzel (though it is a bit heavy, not surprisingly). We had a lovely time!
Great spot for a special night! The daily menu does not disappoint!!! We all shared and feasted together. Loved it!!!
First time visiting, I’m a local for over 43 years. Was really looking forward to this experience. Unfortunately, my experience was somewhat disappointing. Right from the start, I had brought a bottle of 2016 Chappellet wine to have with dinner and set it on the table to be corked. The first thing that the waitress said when she came to the table was my sommelier noticed that you brought the wine in and we’re not able to cork it for you because we already carry that bottle. No where does it state that or it’s mentioned. How I’m I to know what you carry at your restaurant when your wine list is not published. I’m a restaurant owner myself and I would never do that to one of my customers. Also, The bottle that I brought costs $58, because I carry it at my restaurant and they had it on the menu for $198 so that’s a 400% markup on wine. I was in the mood for steak and the only two options were a flat steak and a ribeye steak for $150, yes, that’s not a typo, I said $150. They have to realize that they could of possibly gained a long term customer but now they lost one because of being greedy, nice job.
