Jumpin Jays Fish Cafe Ratings and Reviews
We were two: the man loved every bit of his swordfish meal, while the lady frowned at the "compulsory" side orders of mashed potatoes and parsnips with her choice of crabcakes. Thus she lamented her decision, made with the encouragement of our server, to abandon her original plan to make a dinner of two appetizers. But the service was great and the value outstanding.
(As may be surmised, this review was prepared by the male diner.)
The waitstaff was very attentive and the oysters were decadent and some of the best I have had. From Portsmouth to Portland. The dipping sauces that my girlfriend and I chose were the perfect compliment to fresh fish. Jumpin' Jays has been consistently good each time I dine there!
We went to Jumpin' Jay's upon a friend's recommendation, & we are certainly glad we did. Our server was well-versed, friendly, enthusiastic, w/a pleasant sense of humor. She guided us through the menu & then made spot-on suggestions. She knew exactly what we wanted! My husband had the tuna & veggies. He ordered it blackened, rare, as it was sushi grade. He said it was the best he'd ever eaten. The roasted veggies were mashed/pureed, & seasoned to perfection. My Monk fish came w/a delicious lobster sauce & was light & mouthwatering. My salad was crisp, fresh, & w/the exact amount of a tangy-sweet dressing. We were both clean-platers! We ordered the brownie sundae for dessert which was about as decadent as it gets. The brownies were dense & fudge-like - exactly as they should be! It was accompanied by ice cream & mouse that took this dish from an 8 to a 10. We would recommend Jumpin' Jay's in a heartbeat. Can't wait to be in Portsmouth again.
A nice restaurant conveniently located across the street from a municipal parking lot. Atmosphere was pleasant and the service was very good. I had scallops with a lobster valoute sauce and they were excellent. I was not crazy about the vegetable selection of carrots and parsnips, but will give some points for trying to feature locally grown items in November.
As always the shuck a buck was excellent. The wait staff is awesome, they seem to work together without words, someone takes your order then bread is dropped off, oysters appear and are identified with gusto, drinks appear and so on and so on. Haven't been disappointed for as long as I've visited which has been more than 4 yrs...
Parking was very close by at a public pay lot across the street. The restaurant was very lively when we arrived and we had a 15 minute wait at the bar before our table of 4 was seated. Service was great and the meals were wonderful. 2/4 chose from the Restaurant Week menu (which did not disappoint) and the other 2 chose apps and entrees from the regular menu. It was our first time dining at Jumpin' Jays and we will definitely return.
It was our third time back, and we happened to hit Restaurant Week! As always, food is very good. Wide range of seafood, well-prepared and a good value. Place is, by nature and size, always a little noisy, but not bad enough to complain about. We both had the salmon special, and it was excellent.
Service friendly, helpful, consistent & attentive. Food delicious, on time & presented well. We eat here frequently and took friends who had never been. One whom is not a fish lover but I convinced her to get the haddock piccata and she practically licked the plate she liked it so much. Always a favorite of mine!
The meal was good but I expected better. I ordered the tuna -- it was seared and cut into slices, but the slices were small and seared on all sides so the rare portion was limited. For someone with a bigger appetite it might have been a small portion and a bit skimpy. --- It was good but not excellent or worth bragging about.
Fantastic restaurant! Went for our anniversary and they put us at a perfect table by the window. We could easily talk and enjoyed looking outside. The service staff was wonderful, helping me find a cocktail that is enjoy and recommending a dish. Our water glasses never went below half full and we never once felt rushed or like our server was trying to turn over our table. The food was outstanding and we've already recommended it to friends. We are very much looking forward to going back!
Competent food. Service by Dalia and team was excellent. Knowledgeable, professional and personable attention was given throughout. Alcoholic beverages were served in what I think were undersized glasses. Feels like drinks were short. Sangria portion definitely below competitive standard. Otherwise a fine evening.
The food is mediocre at best. I had the fish that was recommended by our waitress, with the sauce sampler. The sauces were basically glorified mustard, butter and mayo with wasabi and Thai thrown in. The fish was dry. This restaurant was way overpriced for the quality of the food. I will gladly pay for good food, however, we did experience that here. With so many other choices in Portsmouth, I recommend going elsewhere.
We sat at the bar, and Ernie the bartender was our food server as well. He was very attentive, accommodating, helpful and really made our night and JJ's experience a delight. We will definitely return and hope to cross paths with him again. When service is outstanding even the food can be lacking (which it was not :) and you can still have a great experience!
Our first time going to jumpin Jay's and we could not be happier. Really the food was excellent. Fresh seafood and local options. The local beer options were pretty impressive as well. We went for my wife's birthday and we were definitely impressed. The oysters, shrimp, calamari, monkfish and tuna were all exceptional.
Very crowded and noisy in the beginning (approximately 7:45 PM) due to a couple of rather "boisterous" characters at the bar, though this wound down as the evening progressed. Bartenders were a bit rude and not very acommadating. Service was initially slow, however did improve throughout the course of the evening. Food was excellent and the choice of having a sample of all the sauces available was a treat. Prices were a bit on the expensive side, but would go again for a special occasion.
I have heard good things about Jumping Jays and was looking forward to trying it with a good friend. Even though it was a high Tuesday evening, I made a reservation. Nobody said there was a "time limit" on the reservation. We had a drink, we order dinner, and then after we ordered a second drink, the hostess came up to us saying they needed our table could we take our drinks to the bar. When I explained that I have a bad back and sitting and barstools is uncomfortable for me, she pursued the issue asking if we would be finished with the table within 15 minutes after our drinks. I have never encountered such rude service. We won't go back.
