Jumpin Jays Fish Cafe Ratings and Reviews
4 of us were there. We have all been there before, but we went that night mainly because it was "Valentines weekend" and they had an available reservation. Our server was very knowledgeable and accommodating. We had a spill at the table and someone was there immediately to clean up. The food was very good, from appetizers to desserts with one exception. Two of us ordered the halibut and while one was served properly, mine was dry.
All in all it was fine and we will be back again.
I have never had a bad meal- have had a variety of dishes and love them all. My wife can;t bring herself to order anythhing but the Haddock Picatta as it is always perfect. Also, the PEI Mussels are a regualr favorite. Super service, great atmosphere and fu bar to have a drink or dine.
Thanks to Open Table we got the worst table in the Resturant! This has happened more than once at other Open Table restaurants. I finally asked the floor manager what is the deal she gave me a non answer.
Go to Jumpin Jays! The food was great and the service as well . I gave the waitress a 30% plus tip but I am all done with Open Table!
I hope someone from Open Table gets to read this but that is probably wishful thinking.
We come here somewhat often as it has always delivered a great experience. Our server Katie B was very pleasant, easy and helpful. Knowledgeable about everything including gluten concerns for my wife who has a painful allergy. I also get the sense that they are stewards to their food sources and try to get local but also are guided by sustainability in local seafood choices. Please know everyone notices and is watching Jumpin' Jay's and their reputation. It's a sure bet for us when we have friends in town. Thanks to the whole team for keeping it top notch.
We have been going to this restaurant for over a decade, have recommended it to many, always finding it an excellent place to take friends and family for seafood. This was not the case on Friday for our entrees. The service was excellent, and we enjoyed our appetizers. Entrees: one person's halibut was overcooked and the scallops scampi dish was uninspiring in contrast to the scallops at a restaurant in Portland the next night which were cooked perfectly and very tasty.
We arrived 45 minutes before our reservation hoping we could get in early. We could not and when we returned 40 minutes later, the hostess remembered us. Nice touch.
We had the calamari to start which was very good and served with 2 different sauces. My husband had the scallops and I had the swordfish both served with their fish sauce on the side. I didn't care for the vegetable that was listed on the menu and asked if they had another offering and they did. We did not feel rushed and our waitress Kyla was very nice and attentive. We were visiting the area for an overnight and we qould definitely return.
A friend recommended this restaurant. We were seated promptly and a member of the wait staff appeared within minutes to take our drink order and explain the menu. The wait staff was very attentive without being annoying! Our food came out quickly and was hot and tasted fresh. My husband and I both had clam chowder to start and scallops for our entree. The food was delicious! I would definitely eat here again!
I don't eat out often but Jumpin Jays is one of the places I like to go. The restaurant is intimate and fairly quiet. There are other intimate restaurants in the neighborhood, but none are so quiet. The food was excellent. Service was outstanding! My daughter was my guest. She lives in SF and is quite a fine chef herself. She is gluten free so her options were limited but the kitchen was completely willing to alter dishes to meet her needs. She was very pleased with the meal, ambience, and service. I enjoyed sharing a local gem.
Great cocktails and wonderful fish. New Years eve, so extremely busy, with more hostesses than servers. Service was extremely slow, but luckily we were in no hurry. Fish is always excellent here, but awesome cocktails are not as common to find. We appreciated having both. Note that last time we dined, I mentioned in my review that wines by the bottle were too expensive. Now there are some more reasonably priced options. Thanks for that.
Another pleasant New Years Eve at Jays.
The food was great, as always, but it's the staff that gets the high marks. Even on a busy night, always polite and courteous. Our waitress was able to help select a Boyle of wine and skillfully answer questions about the menu. The lobster salad was excellent as was the monk fish.
This was our first visit to Portsmouth, NH and our first dining experience at Jumping' Jays. We started our meal with the crispy calamari which was very tender. I had the crab cake for an entree and it was very flavorful. My husband ordered the monkfish, with a lobster sauce. He described it as rich and filling! There was a nice selection of specialty cocktails, and a dessert menu. We shared the apple crumb cake with ice cream...delicious. Our server was pleasant and attentive. Overall, it was a very positive dining experience.
My wife and I had Christmas Eve dinner in this well-known Portsmouth restaurant, right in the heart of the downtown. The well-stocked raw bar was in view, making a half-dozen oysters irresistible for a starter. My wife had halibut, perfectly cooked, and I had the restaurant's signature dish, haddock piccata. Both were excellent. The reasonable portion sizes were not echoed in the dessert menu -- both of our choices, crême brulée and brownie sundae, were overly generous, though very tasty. As a baker, I enjoyed the fact that the brownies were crisp and nutty, rather then gooey and overpowering. Service was prompt and cheerful. The meal, as described, with two glasses of an excellent Sancerre, came to about $150 including the tip.
Started with shared appetizer, mussels, broth very flavorful & mussels very tender. We both decided on fish--diver scallops with lobster sauce and steelhead trout with a sauce server recommended not on menu, with capers, trout was good but scallops were exceptional. Unfortunately no room for dessert, but if we are in Portsmouth area again, definitely will return.
