Jumpin Jays Fish Cafe Ratings and Reviews
The food was great! Enjoyed the raw bar. Our entrees were super tasty and appropriately portioned. Dessert and coffee were lovely as well. Howerever, the experience was made by the best server we have had any where in a long time. She was friendly, genuine, and had the perfect balance of checking in on us, and leaving us alone to enjoy our evening and meal.
Always absolutely delicious! We wouldn't come to Portsmouth and not go to Jumpin' Jays. The atmosphere is nice - you can be dressed up or casual - but the food is SO good!! The mussels are better than any others we've had in the area, the seafood is delicious, and the Haddock Piccata and Seafood Mullugatawny Stew (with coconut milk!) are amazing!!
This was our first visit to Jumpin Jays. I had to eat gluten free and also couldn't eat garlic, onions, apples, etc., because of IBS. The waitress was super friendly and accommodating, and the menu also indicated gluten-free options. My husband and I are definitely "foodies," and the food here was delicious. We ordered calamari (not gluten-free), a salad with bacon marmalade, seafood mullitagawny, swordfish with a great citrus dijon sauce, beer, and wine. Everything was so delicious. I'd highly recommend this restaurant for the food and service.
We have eaten at Jumpin Jays a few times. Our waiter was friendly but not attentive and did not know much about the seafood. He did not tell us the special fish of the day had been sold out for two hours, and that was our first choice. He did not know about the different oyster selections, or the different kinds of port that I wanted as an after dinner drink. He did know his wine, but I think you have to take time with your table and know a lot about seafood when you work in a higher end seafood restaurant. The special parsnip soup with the shrimp/bacon fritter was incredible! The clams and linguine was one of the worst I have ever eaten. They put 3 clams in their shell on the top of the dish and the rest was minced canned clams in a very strong and sweet onion/garlic cream sauce. Even our little Italian restauran,t in our home town ,gives you a dozen littlenecks in the shell and not minced clams. The Haddock piccata was okay. When the waiter appeared for the dessert option, I had to call him back to ask him about an after dinner drink. While we were starting our dessert he brought the check and told us to take our time. I think for the money you should never feel rushed and/or ignored at the same time. It was only 8:45 on a Saturday night so I don't know why he would have been in a rush. Finally, my daughter had stomach pains, etc. in the middle of the night and was fine in the morning. The only thing we didn't try equally was the raw tuna Poke. My daughter is 21 and has an extremely strong immune system so she was really surprised to have this happen.
The appetizers were so intriguing that i opted to have two instead of an entree. I had: The Tuna Poke and The Fried Oysters. Both were truly memorable taste experiences that were beautifully prepared and presented. My brother had the scallops (his favorite) and said they were great. Service was terrific.
Definitely worth the one-hour drive through a rainstorm to get there!
EVERYTHING was fantastic! Crab cake appetizer had a melding of wonderful flavors. The Haddock Picatta is always incredible!!! AND it is served with a vegetable that of course is perfectly cooked. Our other entree was Shrimp Scampi also excellent! Desert was a delightful combination of maple ice cream with granola and a Carmel sauce.
NYC quality meal in quaint Portmouth. Seriously, don't miss this place. Chowder-rich and bacon smokey. Haddock Picatta perfect, linguine w clams - how they got that perfect combo of citrus essence and creaminess I'll never know. Excellent all around. We're from Bostonia, and we will make the trip again.
This was my fiancé and I's first time to Jumpin Jay's, and we were more than satisfied! The ambiance was incredible; so quite in the restaurant, the lighting was romantic, and the food was incredible. You guys out did our baby-free date, for sure.
Also, the meal prices were very reasonable! We had drinks, an appetizer, 2 meals, and shared a dessert for under $100!
We will definitely be coming back and recommending to our friends :)
Food here is always fantastic, the beer selection needs work but they have a large variety of wines to choose from. They were really busy this past visit so the food took quite a while to get to our table but the waiter was quick to come by our table as soon as we finished a drink.
Price is reasonable for the great quality of food. Will continue to be one of my preferred restaraunts of Portsmouth
I had Valentines dinner here. I had a 7:45 reservation and was still waiting for a table at 8:30. Just before i got up to remind the hostess i was still waiting i saw her pick up her phone to give a table to 2 friends who were coming in. Not good customer service. Food was good but not worth the amount I paid. Very disappointed. Will not return.
