We loved the stately ambiance of the place. And appreciated the distance between tables. The food was very good as was the service. Definitely a place we'll revisit for special occasions.

We had visited Julia's just a few months ago and had a wonderful dinner. Once again I ordered the duck. This time i was disappointed. The pieces were overcooked (I asked for medium with pinkish centers) and thick, instead of the nice fanned serving with pinkish centers as before.
I'm wondering if there is a new chef?

Much as I like “old-fashioned” restaurants, and, as good as the food was on our first visit here, it is a tad seedy and out of date.

Beautiful setting / ambiance. Excellent service. In our party of 4 one of us was quite happy with the pork loin but the 3 others were underwhelmed with their meals (salmon special, mushroom soup, veggie entree).

The tea got quite bitter after it sat int the teapot for over 15 minute. There should be tea pots that you can take the tea out of the teapot so it can steep properly.

Julia's offers a truly lovely experience: the tables are widely separated for easy conversation; the room is lovely and peaceful, in keeping with the Julia Cameron aesthetic; the service is exceptional -- we had to be out by a certain time, and our courses were delivered accordingly. The whole experience felt like an oasis between two busy sessions at the theatre.

Very interesting place for lunch in Berkeley. Chairs are uncomfortable, but the wait staff is very well trained and attentive. The menu is a bit limited for lunch, but the ingredients were very fresh and tasty.

We like Julia's because it is a relatively quiet restaurant where we can hear each other talk. The old building is interesting and creates a very nice ambiance. My partner liked his duck but I found my chicken on the dry side and even with a slightly spicy sauce, it wasn't particularly interesting.
The location is convenient for going to Cal Performances and there is parking. Our server was nice but slow to followup--such as, at first, when we were read to order and then again when we asked for the check.
To repeat: we could hear each other! It was wonderful not having to shout over the din of other people shouting because back ground music was loud.

We chose Julia's because it was reported to be quiet, and we wanted a venue for quiet conversation. Julia's filled the bill very well, in a lovely room with excellent traditional French cuisine food.

Guests should be told that for admission to the restaurant itself, it is necessary to ring the bell outside the entry door to the Berkeley Club.

An older-style place, Julia's is a lovely spot for a pre-show dinner near UC campus. Salads were fresh and interesting; the fish entree (halibut?) was lovely; cauliflower cake entree interesting and satisfying. Wine list is good. Service a bit slow but gets the job done.

The dinner was bizarre, and we see no reason ever to return to Julia's. We'd been attracted to this restaurant because its head chef is a Maître Cuisinier de France, an elite association that numbers a couple of hundred top chefs in France and, here in the U.S., such luminaries as Daniel Boulud and Eric Ripert in New York and Gerald Hirigoyen and Roland Passot in SF. The menu, however, immediately struck us as composed of unimaginative standard dishes, not really restaurant food but more bistro food. We were also dumbfounded and somewhat amused by the spelling errors in the French names of a couple of items. (Did the French head chef bother to read the printed menus?) One first course, with tiny ravioli, was actually tasty; the other was an uninspiring salad of the sort one could quickly assemble oneself. The main courses were disappointing, halfway between what might be served in a decent but undistinguished brasserie and what might be served in a French school cafeteria. The pork loin was not only unevenly cooked but also slightly overcooked (undoubtedly not done slowly sous vide), with the outer parts somewhat tough and chewy. The steak was OK but its sauce had an off-taste; it was supposed to be served with a persillade but that component was overwhelmed by addition of a third-rate bordelaise, seemingly thickened with flour. One chocolate dessert could have been by Danone, from a refrigerated supermarket shelf; the other was a lemon tart with a slightly overcooked pastry shell and a slightly undercooked and runny lemony crème anglaise. It was hard for us to believe that a Maître Cuisinier de France had anything to do with this food; it was in no way worthy of this association. Service was friendly, reasonably attentive, but not particularly knowledgeable. The Julia Morgan building is indeed worth seeing, but the ambiance of the restaurant reminded us of one in an assisted-living institution.

Our party of four loved our dinner here. It is a very cozy space in a beautiful historic building, very atmospheric, but with slightly uncomfortable chairs. The food was beautifully prepared and presented - 4 different main courses all were winners. I was a little let down by dessert - my pot de creme was intensely chocolately but its texture was a little grainy. The service was well-timed, not intrusive, and they let us linger and talk without guilt. We plan to return.

If old school style dining in a castle is your thing then this is the place to be. We checked in for the restaurant week prix fixe menu and thought it was pretty good. The steak frites was perfectly cooked, the pot de creme was the perfect texture, while the crisp lettuce salad was a poorly composed creation.

Not surprisingly, our evening at Julia’s was a hit all around. It started with the warm and professional greeting from Fe, the Maitresse D’, who all evening displayed a commitment to her role as a member of a smoothly functioning team of servers and others. Then, of course, there was our server, Serouen, who did not disappoint. She is consistently attentive without intruding, amusing with out over-stepping, efficient without rushing the diners. A true gem. And the entire team in that room were remarkable as we observed them attending to the dozen or so tables of diners with smoothness and decorum. Finally, Chef Marcon’s Berkeley Restaurant Week’s Prix Fixe menu was remarkable. Every course was delicious, from the leek and potato soup (smooth, creamy, but not overly so), to the steak frites and pork tenderloin (both of them cooked to perfection), and finally to the chocolate mousse (be still my heart!) and the lemon tarte (and be still MY heart, too!). The accompanying libations were right on target. This restaurant continues to do everything right!! We’ll be back very soon!

I expect Restaurant Week to feature GOOD food at an enticing price. Last year, it was so good I went 3 times, bringing my friends. This year the special menu had nothing worth eating, so I had a steak - ok, but the fries were cold. The bread was nicely heated with good butter. My friend also found nothing worthwhile on the special menu. Disappointing.

Julia's is a wonderful place to take visitors -- the history of Julia Morgan, the furnishings that complement the architecture are stunning and provide a look into the big money days of that era.

Food is good, service is very consistent. We were at lunch on a very quiet day and it was just a pleasure.
